View Full Version : Balanced PBEM
Anyone have suggestions for a balanced game for PBEM
Looking for more modern (hypothetical?) conflicts,
maybe one of the Middle East Scenarios?
Thanks,

I recently read somewhere (maybe not on these forums) that the Korea '99 scenario that comes on the CD is a real nail-biter from both sides. I haven't actually played that one (or opened it, either), so I can't personally vouch for it one way or the other.
Sorry I can't be of more help than this!
John
I've played Korea 99 PBEM. If you like a war of movement look elsewhere as its WW1 on the Korean peninsula and breakthroughs are very tough to achieve - but as SD mentioned it can come down to the last few turns for victory or defeat as the North Koreans grind away in the greatest tradition of human wavers.
As for the Middle East scenarios... I haven't actually played any of them vs a human, but none of them seemed particularly balanced with the Arabs getting smashed every which way (historically accurate though ;)).
Fulda 76 has reasonable balance I believe... been a long time since I've played it though and I kind of forgot most of the details about it.
Lebanon 82 also has decent balance. It may not look it since the IDF heavily overpowers the Arabs and has some really nasty interdiction, but it has limited turns to seize objectives against a significant number of Syrian units which can delay them if properly placed. Not a very fun-filled scenario for the Arabs though, as they basically setup their defensive positions for the first half of the scenario then do nothing for the last half of the scenario as high IAF interdiction combined with some powerful air units makes moving = death. Its sort of like watching a movie for the Arab player in the last half.
The large NATO-Warsaw Pact would probably be good, but I haven't played any of them to have any idea in respect to balance and such.

Thanks for the response, that Korea 99 can be a meatgrinder even against the PO, not much in the way of flanking or moving.
I've never played a Mid East scenario so I wasn't sure of the playability of those. The best bet seems to be a NATO-Warsaw Pact scenario. The Next War By Bob Cross is great, very playable. Just wanted to try something different. Isn't there a Ukraine 2004 scenario out there? If so, anyone have comments on it or where to get it?
Thanks

There's a scenario out there called "Chinese Farm 73". Although I managed to squeak out a SV as the Israelis in this scenario, it would appear to have some promise for PBEM play.
Thanks for the response Rasmus. I have played that one, just finished a game versus DeconMan as the Nordic Commander. The game finished as a draw. It was really enjoyable, lots of different fronts, challenges, but there are some bugs. I might want to try it again but this time see how the theater option for the Russian attack on Denmark and Norway or NATO early response really opens up the game.
I could play you. Maybe a mirrored game as I also have some options I would like to play out.

Ok, send me over an email. I have some questions about the scenario I like to ask before starting up.

There is a scenario by Daniel McBride called Indopak, its a WhatIf India Pakistan war in 2002 and I hear it is enjoyable. (there is another India-Pakistan scenario which is horrible so be careful to choose the correct one ;) )
I don't know how balanced it is but IIRC some guys from this board have played it, hope they'll post their experiences.
Thanks Kraut, I'd like to take a look at it. Idea of a location to obtain it?

Thanks Kraut, I downloaded the scenario and took a quick look at it. It is really big, but it looks good, alot of work went in to this one.

I always enjoyed Third World War by Trey Marshall. Its tough for the Soviets to win PBEM, but it is possible.
Mad Cow, Tigersqn thanks. If you guys know where they are posted, point me in that direction.

Its true that its not a big one for movement though its important for both players to place their limited and volitile assets well.
One of my favourite scenarios as its a real nail biter.
