View Full Version : New forum for a new game

With the arrival of Battlefield 2 and some personal observation and play by yours truly, I am setting up this BF forum mostly to discuss and coordinate our activities with the new game. I know we've had a BF forum in the past, but with the advent of new gameplay, mods, etc. I think this game deserves its own forum. Additionally, we are planning on setting up a rented BF2 server for the 5th Armchair Battalion - see a previous thread on joining up!

Ooooh...any plans on when this will go down?
We should just get a giant donation pot and make a franken-computer...slap linux on it and make it like a 24 person dedicated server ;)
Are you setting the server up on your existing stuff or renting? A warning about it:
BF servers will suck a computer dry. My clan set up one recently (it was the one we were playing on that was mostly empty at the time) but we had to take it down because other customers on that box suffered serious slowdown in their games.
If it can be afforded, I would try to find somewhere that rents out BF2 boxes for servers rather than put the game on a box that runs anything for the site (it would be fine off the same connection, just not off the same box).
Oh, and would you make it ranked or unranked? :D

We would rent a server. It would have nothing to do with the current website. What is the difference exactly between ranked and unranked? Does ranked just mean you have stats that follow you around?
Ranked also has friendly fire on without punishing I believe

That would be a plus! Nothing worse than sitting in a frantic gun battle when you are trying to take out some armor by laying mines...and 10 minutes later some yahoo on your team steps on one of your leftover mines and then penalizes you for it.

Quite the opposite actually. Friendly Fire on ranked servers has the potential to permanently affect a players record (it won't necessarily mean they're banned permanently or anything, but it will affect their ranked status).
Essentially, ranked means you just have stats that follow you around. However, you have to use the official BF2 configuration exactly and they're supposedly much more closely monitored by EA Games. However, there's two major benefits, one it will potentially attract the more serious and competitive (and hopefully team oriented) BF2 players AND it allows access to unlocked weapons and equipment by the players based upon their individual rank.

:whist: and then punishes you for it and you get banned?

I think that would be really nice. In a competitive server I think people will be much more inclined to use teamwork since everything counts.
I would vote for a ranked one.

Lets look around for some servers for rent, and then go from there.
Gobeavs sent me part of a review from IGN. Ranked servers have to be specifically bought from only certain hosts, and are likely to be more expensive, and therefore, far less worth it.
I'm currently running a server with 2 people in it (gobeavs and arkamus). I've been told that voip works and there is "not really" any lag.
I will put it up again around 6:00pm Central (gmt - 6)
The IP adress is 24.14.109.246
and the password is "dingis"
Be warned, I'm also inviting some of my local friends, this should turn out to be an interesting battle :devious:

I'll try to be there. :) I have a lot of work today.
However, Scuud, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you had a video card that wouldn't play the game? Does it allow you to run it locally, but just not let you connect to public servers?
You're correct, my video card is not good enough to play the game. I don't know if I show up on the public servers or not. I'm frankly not sure I even want to, more work and some person I don't know might weasel their way in.

Are you saying you can put up a server, but not actually play on it? I'm confused here.
Or, can you play at home, but just not publicly?
His card is incapable of acctually playing in the game, but it seems to run a dedicated fine. Making a sacrafice for the team :cheeky:

From what we discovered, it takes a specific setting to get the dedicated server to actually show up on the list, but that people can connect without.

Yes, a dedicated server acts just like a normal server, but the server does not play - so it doesn't have the graphics calculations and therefore doesn't need a good graphics card.

I should be there also - if I remember :p
(someone remind me on xfire :D)
I'm sorry to say, that due to circumstances beyond my control (parents  ), the server will not be up until 7pm CST (gmt-6)
That's 7:00, not 6:00
Make sure you show up if you can, as of now we're a little outnumbered (4 or 5 against 6 or 7)

Let us know when you have the server turned on. I just tried and it couldn't find your server...
wow, I think that game proved that squads are really really important. An antitank and a medic proved really effective, maybe next time we should work on getting a support in too for reloads.

Yeah.....teamwork was really effective - we really rocked. I didn't know we needed a support guy, I was thinking about switching from Spec Ops but I never heard anyone calling for ammo so I stayed....
Thanks for the use of the server Scuud! It worked near-flawlessly I would say until the end when we had 500+ pings...:(
glad you guys had fun, maybe next time someone can record a round and I can see something other than the timeleft and how many players were in the game :)

That may have had something to do with their entire team running off the same connection.. Hopefully once they've all gone to their respective homes we can get a game with more people!

No way, we needed you as spec ops. I was talking to the enemy commander after the game and he was freakin' out because he had no clue what was happening to his arty ;)
