View Full Version : Battlefield 2 Squad Forming
Siberian HEAT

I think there is enough interest in this game to justify taking a stab at forming a squad from the ranks of ACG/SZO players. The squad would be an element of the 5th Armchair Battalion (our FPS "clan" site).
The game is currently only available as the demo, but should be on store shelves soon. If you are interested in a great squad-based tactical shooter, I suggest you grab the demo and check it out. Likewise, if you are interested in playing with other Armchair commanders, just check in with this thread!
I sign myself up. :D
I'm game. I don't like being squadleader so much, I'm more of a medic - supporting the team. But I'm good at pestering the squad leader for orders :D (just ask overseer!).
And I've already pre-ordered the full version, so I'll be playing that also.
EDIT: And if anyone wants to play, school gets out tomarrow so I will have some free time....xfire: gobeavs
What time zone are you all in? Being in Japan means that I am up while most of you are sleeping.
Leftie, you're in Japan? I'm in Korea. I play in TW and believe me, getting up at 1am Sunday morning and playing until 1 pm Sunday afternoon takes it's toll. But I'm game to try this out.

I'm sorry Curt, the general policy of all gaming here is that you must disown your family, move into a dingy basement somehwere with a T3 connection to the internet, and be available at any and all hours of the day to run black ops into various 3rd world nations. Oh wait...ummmm forget I said that. There are NO black ops being run anywhere. :whist:

Hey, Brian, heading to Colorado Springs tomorrow. Going to spend the night, then hit Garden of the Gods and the Focus on the Family visitor center before heading up to the Buena Vista area. Ever heard of "Spring Canyon"?
Anyway, gonna spend the week rafting, biking, hiking, ATV'ing, and doing healthy activities.
Blech!:D

I've never heard of Spring Canyon, although it might be a local term for the Chalk Creek canyon near BV since there are hot springs in there. If you are on an ATV I can recommend going up Chalk Canyon almost all the way to St. Elmo. There is a trail going south towards Grizzly Lake that should be open to ATV's (I haven't been there in 10 years). It is relatively short doubletrack up to a really fantastic bowl with a lake in the middle and steep mountains all around it. We had to hike it...and while fun, and ATV would be much sweeter. :)
Also, there is plenty of Colorado trail in the area for hiking. I am doing it in sections, riding my bike from Denver to Durango. So far I have done 100 miles of the 468 total! Also plenty of 14,000 peaks in the area if you really want to kill yourself. :D

I know we have a day set aside at the hot springs. My bud and I plan on taking the ATV's out for about 3 hours, so we should be able to get to some awesome places.
We have been looking forward to this for almost a year. This will be our first family vacation in almost 4 years! If we enjoy it, we may start going 2x a year regularly.

Frankly driving a tank is the only thing I'm good at.
Walking = death
Flying = death
Boats = death
I have picked up a bit of what the squad leader does. I defaulted to squad leader at one point and stumbled into the screen where you can point guys where to attack and stuff. Next up is learning what the CO does. Seen a LOT of bad commanders (or none) during gameplay. Can really change the outcome of the battle.
Nothing is cooler than having a column of heavy armor bearing down on an enemy base - with APC's ferretting out the exposed enemy troops who are desperately trying to avoid being seen at all. I do think the armor could be even better if there were a 3rd seat that could optionally allow a main gunner while the other chap drives the tank. Of course, if you have voice comms on, your top gunner can point out enemy threats. Otherwise, you spend a lot of time trying to keep the sneaky enemy from putting a banana in your tailpipe.

I agree, I think the option of a 3rd seat would have been good. If one person is in the vehicle, let them do both, but if an additional person jumps in, they should be able to do the main gun separately.
The CO stuff is quite easy really. You only have 4 abilities (plus yelling at people to go places). The key is just to know where to use the UAV and Artillery where the team actually needs it and not randomly.

To be really effective the commander has to find a nice safe warm comfy place and hide out :( . I commanded last night with 40 players on my side and you spend so much time spotting, putting UAVs up, and dropping arty & supplies that playing conventionally just isn't feasible.
On the up side, I was the only commander that didn't get a mutiny vote for over three hours. Guess all those years of playing Close Combat payed off. ;)

I found it's nice to be a sniper or maybe special forces and find a nice building or other high point to sit up on. It's nice to not only see the battlefield on the command screen but also be able to really look at what's happening. Just don't let an enemy sniper get a bead on you.
I have a question, as squad leader I find it hard to put the attack and defend markers in the right spots since I usually do it from the real-time game screen....I see you fine squad leaders (overseer and HEAT) can put it pretty much in the right spot every time, even from across the map...am I missing a screen or something?
Usually I just hit "t" then "attack here"...

My one real glory shot at commander mode:
Our team didn't have a commander, everyone was saying "We need a commander!" so I thought I would apply...I got the job, started to go to the top of the hotel as a sniper to get a good spot to camp out (probably bad terminology there ;)), and so someone promptly started a mutiny vote against me - I guess I was taking too long to get the top of the hotel...so I decided to resign before greater shame could come upon me :D.

Can anyone tell me what I really need to run this - and what they would personally recommend?
Dr. S.
I'll post what I sent to Dr. S in a PM here, just in case anyone else has this question:
Can anyone tell me what I really need to run this - and what they would personally recommend?
Depends on how much you want to spend :D...I'll try to keep this simple:
Until you get up to about 110 pounds, ATI cards are better -
IMO, the sweet spot by looking at prices is the Radeon 9800 pro.72 pounds, and you should be able to run BF2 - presuming the rest of your system is above the minimum specs. It won't be on high settings, but it will definately be playable.
If you want cheaper than that, the next two going down the line are the Radeon 9600 pro and radeon 9200..
If you want to stay with nVIDIA, the Geforce FX 5700 Ultra, then the FX 5200 (possibly ultra). The thing about going with nVIDIA is that the 5200 actually might be slower than the card you have now, its just it has a certain feature set (DirectX 9) that is needed for BF2, so it will run it.
Or, if you are willing to spend the big bucks there are cards to suit your needs on that end too :D.
EDIT: Ok, I'll cut to the chase...I recommend the 9800 pro, and that is a little spendy then the 9600 pro. If that still is spendy I would recommend possibly saving up the money you would spend on a card and waiting to get a 9600 pro. A 9200 series will run it, but it won't be pretty.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm kind of loathe to upgrade my card again in such a relatively short space of time, especially for just one game. I like the NVIDIA cards - but from what you say, I could actually slow things down unless I spend a small fortune, that's a no-no.
Dr. S.

Dr. S.
Yeah, its a tough choice. That is why a lot of people are mad at EA for not supporting the Ti series - they run well for how old they are, so to get a new card without downgrading takes a bit of money.
EDIT: And even if it didn't slow it down, you would have to play on low resolution with low settings....so it would probably just be best to wait till you get a new system (even if its a year down the road), and play BF2 the way its meant to be played.

I'm too broke at the moment... too much re-enacting, etc. etc. and etc. :D
I'm broke. [I ate a can of green beans for dinner last night ] But as soon as I can scrounge up enough money to buy the game you can count me in. So far I have close to 100 hours invested in the demo. Much of that as squad leader. I really like the game.
Got mine in the mail this morning. Got to love Fedex. :cheeky:
Has anyone run this on something older than a FX 5700? the FX 5700 and the ATI 8500 are the requirements listed on the case. A friend of mine has what I am guessing is a FX 5200.

Older chipsets don't support the necessary DX9 stuff.
A friend of mine has what I am guessing is a FX 5200.
It will run on an FX 5200, just very slowly.
It works on a 5600 fine.
I'm debating on whether or not I should buy the game. At least 50% of the people I'd play it with don't have good enough cards, and there's no coop in multiplayer *anger*
For us who find themselves unemployed.... 50$ is quite alot of money for a game that you're only gonna play for a couple days (thinks of hl2)

leftie and arkane are in the Far East and may have trouble getting with the rest of us.
I have some proposals:
1. We try to get together at a set time for the first few "meetings" on a central server that works decent for all of us. Then we can form a squad, lock it, and all work together. Other than having the ability to kick people or choose our own maps, this is really about as good as having our own private server until we really get cooking.
2. The toughest part of team based gaming is getting everyone together at the same time. One tool that really helps with this is Xfire (http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php) (thanks Overseer and gobeavs for pointing this out). It is essentially an instant messenger system with the added ability to see where your friends are playing (server IP address, etc.). This allows you to jump right on where your squad mates are already. You only need to fire this up when you are going to play a game, so it need not run all the time.
3. We should probably consider what classes of players everyone wants to specialize in (at least when we are together). We need a well-rounded squad!
4. I have to say that this game is one of the best I've seen for squad-based play and it is definitely worth your while if you are on the fence about picking it up. /end public service announcement

Good idea, I second it. I'm all for playing on ranked servers, anyone oppose it? I think we will get better competition that way.

As of now, you can only see the IP address of the server, you can't instantly join or do in-game chat. But being the popularity of BF2, I bet there will soon be a patch to add this to xfire.

Good suggestion. There has been lots of talk about this online - what is the optimum squad makeup. I think we need at least one medic, one support, and one engineer, just because they keep the squad healthy, resupplied, and armor fixed (of course having at least one of each is probably obvious).

Have you noticed how much this game sort of drags when the squads aren't operating? I've noticed a lot of people seem to just like forming a squad on their own and then doing nothing with it. I always try to find a squad led by a blokes with clan tags - at least you know they have an idea what teamwork means.

Yeah. The fun-factor is directly proportional to how much teamwork is used. Overseer, one of his friends, and I played for like 3 hours (they actually played much longer than that), and it went by in the blink of an eye because we worked as a team and it was extremely enjoyable.

I would prefer team-play. This Rambo s%$t doesn't cut it with me.
Here's some proposals:
For now we should stick to the demo until we can form 1-2 full squads + commander. That gives us time to work TTP's.
Maybe set up TOE's for the squads. Squad leader decides who fills what role based on the players ability (I stink at the assault but gimme a predator and I'll pick you off at almost BVR). Medics and support are totally neccesary.
EDIT: Here's just a quickie thrown together to give you an idea. Note that I do belive the SF kit is invisible to the UAV, but shows on the scan and when spotted. Squad leaders should probably run SF kits, as members can respawn on them.

Squad/company SOPs are almost madated. I've played in some pretty large organized tournaments, so if you guys need help, just yell. Timewise for me is not usully a problem, but optimally friday night for you guys (sat. morning for me) would be best.
I think I would lean toward more medics per squad. If you only have one medic, and he goes down, you are in trouble. If you have 2 or 3 medics, they can revive each other and if anyone else goes down chances are there is a medic who can get to him. This makes the squad near-unstoppable. I also think for an assault group, that more actual assault people are needed - maybe 2 SF 2 assault. The assault men have more armor, and IIRC they also have smoke grenades which can be helpful when raiding a base.
That makes sense. Thinking about it, it would probably be better to drop the AT guy, and configure an assault squad like so:
3 x Assault
1 x Support
2 x Medics
If they were supported by a squad of say 3 AT guys at a standoff distance and maybe an LAV/tank then their chances of success would be higher.

I'm not sure I like the idea of not having at least one AT guy. It'd be fine if you have the armor support, or support of an AT squad, but it'd be too easy to get into a situation where you don't have them. Without either SF or AT, you'll have a tough time taking out that tank (last time I check defilbulators don't damage armor  ).

I agree with Overseer...and having specialized somewhat in both driving armor and taking out armor, it can be a real challenge if you don't have the ability to reach out and touch someone with an AT guy. Personally, I prefer to deconstruct a defensive position from a distance rather than sneak in and take it down from close quarters...but then again I am not a professional soldier. :D
Having said that, If we did have two squads, the AT squad could provide heavy support while the other squad approaches the base.
However, seeing as we only have a limited number of guys interested, and few who can play on a regular basis...I might have to rethink how we can approach this.

I have to say, while I prefer both the long distance and close range approach, I find nothing beats sneaking right into the base and taking them out while they're busy trying to deal with the outside threats. :D

Yep, my handle is siberianheat. :)
Count me in! Thanks to some help from Curt (thanks Curt!) I have a shinny new copy of BF2 sitting on my desk. I should get it installed in time for some fragg'n fun this weekend.
I was planning on getting a "serious" squad together here at the CGSC. We have enough people here who want to, shall we say, avoid the immature players and play on an organized squad on an organized team-centered server. However, we could join forces with the 5th. Say as a Company element within the 5th ACG Battalion.
Where is the web site for the 5th AG? Has anybody got anything organized yet in term of renting a server?
I am Tinjaw on X-Fire.

The forums for the 5ACG are here - http://5acg.com/hq/index.php?http://5acg.com/hq/
That is where most everything goes on, but you can find a link to the main page from there if you would like. As far as renting a server, there was some talk about it befre....maybe Brian (SiberianHEAT) can give us an update on that. It would most likely have to be unranked, since ranked servers are about 2x the price (:surprise:). Which reminds me....can anyone tell me why ranked servers are so expensive? I can't imagine having strict settings would boost the price THAT much.

They're so expensive because the hosts have to get an exclusive deal set up with EA Games and they're supposedly very select about who they select. Also the fact that ranked servers will basically always be filled while unranked won't get as much demand.
can anyone tell me why ranked servers are so expensive? Yes. EA wants a cut of the pie of the lucrative game server market. Selling somebody a $50 game once isn't as great as selling them a game once and getting royalties monthly.

Renting a server:
Two things need to happen before I'd even suggest renting a server.
1. We need enough people interested in this to make it worth our while. There is no sense in getting even a small server if no one is going to play on it.
2. We have to have enough people interested who are able to play semi-regularly. One of the things about having a team (or clan or whatever you want to call it) is to have matches against other squads. If we only have the odd chance meetings with each other, there is no point in doing this.
That being said, my suggestion for now is to find another clan somewhere that we can attach ourselves to. This would be good for the experience, for getting ourselves in with a good group of players. Maybe we could be a squad within their clan? Once we establish ourselves (or a core group of 5-8 players) then we can talk about taking this further.

Well technically, we might be able to fold ourselves into my clan which already has a free very very fast (although unranked) server up.

The Clan's War-Ensemble (www.war-ensemble.com), it's run by DaiTengu (who already said he wanted to recruit you haha). The IP should be 205.138.195.60, although it might have changed, I'll have to check with him. You guys on the west coastish area might ping a little higher on it, but it's on a very fast stable connection. The clan was mainly a CS clan, but thankfully that's died off, and now it's a matter of picking up who wants to stick around for BF2.

I'm visiting the parents this weekend so I'm not at my home computer, I brought BF2 back with me, but it's a matter of whether it runs or not on here (it should run okay though). If I get around to installing it I might hop on for a bit, we'll see.

It would be awesome to have you aboard sometime! Just create an account with the "[5ACG]" in front of your name so we know it's you! ;)
I'm a rotorhead myself, as I HATE fixed-wing in this game, mainly because I suck so bad and have no desire to teach myself to get better. I like playing commander so much in this game that I rarely fly anyway, unless I use it to get to a nice secluded spot to issue my orders! :devious:
I’ll create the account this weekend. As for flying, I would rather be in a chopper than fixed wing, but that’s just because the flight model is so dumbed down. Granted, it’s a step up from 1942... but not much.
I can fly the helicopter if I need to, but I find I'm much happier either in a tank (complaining about the enemy flyboys that blow me up) or trouncing through woods/deserted streets by myself (or with a couple of teammates) as SpecOps. I'm trying (whenever I think I can stand being frustrated) to get the hang of the sniper rifles in this game, but it tends to be, look in the general area of the enemy, close eyes, press mouse button randomly.
Helicopter >>>>>>> Fixed-wing
I actually like the Blackhawks. If you can fill both miniguns and have a couple engineers in the back to repair it is a force to be reckoned with. Those mini-guns rock....

I do choose multi player...then i search the servers and when I click on a server 75% of the time I get a message that says "you need to disconnect to do this" What does that mean.

Just a clarification. You do NOT want to choose the icon which says play online. YOu want the first one, which simply says BF2. This allows you to select "multiplayer" from inside the game, rather than be forced into a server.

Playing BF2 vicariously through you all,
I'm guessing it's your GeForce. The game apparently requires a "NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or greater" or "ATI Radeon 8500 or greater". Your card is GeForce 4 series... you'll need at least a GeForce FX series (which, ironically, was the next series to be released).
The good news is that you can get a decent graphics card (one that will let you play the game) for $80 to $100.
For what it's worth, the rest of the req's read like this:
Windows XP (32-bit)
1.7 GHz Pentium 4 / Athlon XP or greater
512 MB RAM or more
460MB of HD Space
The good news is that you can get a decent graphics card
Thanks Sickpup. Being that this is the original video card from mid 2003, is replacing video cards mere-mortal-proof or will it require the computer being taken to a smart guy?
I do meet all of the other requirements :)

It's not too complicated, basically open the computer, locate the old one, take out a screw (most likely) pull out the card, put new one in, put screw back in.
It's only slightly more complicated than that, but not a whole lot.

Overseer has it pretty correct...its not too tough. Just make sure you don't have a lot of static build up before touching the insides.
The one thing I would be wary of is getting the right card. The card you have is actually a very speedy card, it just doesn't have a specific feature set that is needed to run BF2. This means that unless you get an nVIDIA 5700 or above - or an ATI 9600 or above...you won't get much (if any) performance improvement in any other game - in fact they may actually be slower with the new card. So if you are thinking about one of the cheaper cards (under 75 dollars) to satisfy BF2 requirements, I would try to rethink that and maybe hold off till you can afford something a little better. Of course, if BF2 is all you play then going with one of those cards won't make much of a difference.
We'll look forward to meeting you on the battlefield :D.
Note: If you need any advice, feel free to ask. I'll try not to be as long-winded :p.
EDIT: If you decide to go with an nVIDIA based card, it should be almost plug-and-play (possibly a driver reinstall - but that is easy). If you go with an ATI card...its a little more difficult because you have to remove the previous nVIDIA drivers, and install new ATI drivers. And unfortunately sometimes the nVIDIA drivers don't come off easy :(.

Hey! I now have an "extra" NVIDIA 5700 card that ran the demo very well at lower resolutions.
Who needs it?! I'll sell it for $50 plus S&H.

I might be interested if I can find the money.

Send me a PM if you're interested - we can talk trade if you have anything cool! ;)
The one thing I would be wary of is getting the right card.
unless you get an nVIDIA 5700 or above - or an ATI 9600 or above...you won't get much (if any) performance improvement in any other game - in fact they may actually be slower with the new card
Ahh...nothings ever a slam dunk. Convincing CINC-HOUSE to release the appropriations data for a new video card will be tougher than simply explaining away my accidently ending up at bestbuy last night while just happening to have an old unused gift card with me.
To be continued...
Just be sure to know which type of card you need - AGP or PCI.

If there is no AGP slot it would be kind of a waste to buy a new card....:(

Nah, PCI and PCIx are alive and well.

Well, I didn't take PCI-ex into account (although it is doubtful he would have had it since his Ti4600 is most likely AGP)...but PCI is not alive and well if graphics cards are concerned :D.
Curt mentioned: I now have an "extra" NVIDIA 5700 card that ran the demo very well at lower resolutions.
So if the 5700 ran the demo at lower res, 5700 would be viewed as a very minimum capable. I'd love to get a 7800 but their pretty expensive, may go 6800 if my research approves.
Since you two (gobeve and sickpup) seem to be present, what cards are you all currently using and did you have to upgrade to run BF2?

If you can stomach the bill, I recommend the 6800 series. I have the 6800 GT, and while I think my particular card underperforms a bit (although it could be my CPU, I have to look into it), I still can run the game at 1024x768 with all high settings except for dynamic lighting. But BF2 is a performance hog, it performs excellent in other games as well. I didn't upgrade for BF2 in particular...my PC was just getting a little old.
The 6800 plain-jane is also a very capable card, just a step down from the GT.
EDIT: How much memory do you have? 1 GB is highly recommended for BF2.
Exerps from a DXDIAG last night:
Intel P4 2.53 GHz Processor
512 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4600 with 6/15/05 driver updates
DirectX 9.0C
1G RAM?, wow... :crosseye:

Yeah, I don't have any benchmarks on it (I'll try to dig some up), so I don't know exactly how much of a benefit you get, but I have heard reports that even up to 2 GB of RAM gives improvements.
The other thing is that BF2 is also CPU intensive (all battlefield games are). The problem is, most web sites benchmark the graphics cards, so they just use the most powerful CPU possible to make the graphics card the bottleneck...so I don't really know where the bottleneck will shift from your graphics card to your processor. If you get a 6800 series card, it may turn out that your processor could be holding it back.
Yet another edit: The game will still run of course, it just might not be as pretty.
Found some CPU and Memory benchmarks.
http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST--2147-x-x-x&body_pagenum=4
The problem with these benchmarks are described in the paragraphs -
"However, once again, the numbers only tell half the story. Our in-game testing indicates that going cheap on the CPU isn't going to result in pretty play once the action gets tough. The demo can't account for massive loads present on 64-person servers. Nor will it account for CPU usage by the artificial intelligence if you play single-player."
And here is a comment on memory -
"While using our setup with 512MB, we experienced lots of chugging due to the large textures swapping between system memory and the hard drive. If you're stuck with 512MB of RAM reducing texture quality to medium or low will help smooth out the game"

My gaming pc is currently waiting on a Radeon X700, and so is out of commission for a little while.
My older rig is running a Radeon 9600XT. It's only got a 2.0 pentium in it, and 768m RAM. It runs ok on smaller maps with the textures and settings turned way down.
I'm thinking since you've got a 2.5ghz, you'd be alright with a 9700 or above. Or, maybe a 9600 if you buy another 512 of RAM.

Sorry, guys. The 5700 is gone now.
Snooze ya lose! ;)
