This is strange. I had a computer crash a while back and am now reinstalling all my programs....but I can't reinstall TOAW COW. The only new change to my system would be the install of Windows SP2. Would this cause a problem?? COW worked fine for years, I have windows XP home edition and never had a problem. Now I cannot even get the installer to start. I get the dialog box asking if I want to install. I answer "yes", then get nothing.

Thanks for any help!

windows XP eh!?

Can you, before you go to far, partition your drive and have WIN98 installed on one partition and winXP on the other.
Have your autoexec give you options to which OS you wish to start. WIN98 is still, unfortunately, the best platform for all games, so I've experienced and heard.

Well it seems like service pack 2 is the culprit. I was able to install on my recovery drive which has win xp without sp2. Not much memory on that drive though, so not a great platform.

Thanks Bdr for the tip, not sure I am going to partition though unless it is the only hope. Any other ideas regarding service pack 2?

I heard through the grapevine that XP home version doesn't let just any application write to the c:\program files\ directory.

And so sometimes there are weird problemos just like the one you mentioned.

I'm not sure what the answer is except maybe you could try installing it in C:\my documents\[user name]\ directory or something.

I ran into the same problemo on my mom's lap top ( she has xp home version as well ) and I had to put the clone in a directory called:

C:\my documents\default user\application data\toawc\

before I would read\write files to the clone program.

Good luck.

The COW version of TOAW should run fine with XP Pro SP2. I must say however that I never, ever, install games, applications, tools, utilities or whatever in the "Program Files" directory to avoid messing up my system. My version is in "C:\Games\The Operational Art of War\Century of Warfare" and it is quite happy where it is, never giving any error. I suggest removing it completely (a manual removal of some remaining files in the "Program Files" directory might be necessary to clean it up properly) and then re-install in a seperate directory.

Furthermore you can decline to install when asked once you've inserted the CD, then access the CD contents through "My Computer" and run Install from there.

Good luck.
