View Full Version : Rising Sun
So does anyone play Rising Sun anymore?
I find it the best of the 3 (West Front, East Front II and RS) just because of the material represented. Cave busting and banzai attacks are just cool (also star shells).
On that note, anyone up for a PBEM?
I'm not very good, but enjoy the game.
I also think RS is very good. Jungle warfare with emphasis on sighting is an enjoyable concept. I like the others as well, but RS can be a blast. I think I have room for one more game. Just pick the scenario (hun\man vs human) and the side, then send it along.
Good luck,
Ray

I left off playing Rising Sun because it isn't "bloody" enough--that is, it takes too long to eliminate units and the game drags on. I even fiddled with what little adjustment one could make and it didn't help.
Now I'm wondering if West Front is any better.

Dale, try me! ... if you feel ... err... *your troops" die too slowly .. LoL ..
Just kidding, I do want more games, however unfortunately I do not have RS, only EF and WF ---- anyone here (include Mr. Krink :D) ... please feel free to pick up anything you are interested in and --- shoot me :D
Hey ER..
Maybe you are taking on too many games. Having trouble keeping track of your opponents. I already am one of your opponents.:)
Maybe you should get RS, and I might have a little better success against you.

haha.. how can I forget you, Ray? :D
I was just teasing you :)
Actually my copies of EF and WF were from a friend ---- long time ago I persuaded him to buy W@W knowing that he won't like it (and thus I could take those away from him at proper later chance... hehe... just like my traps in the games, always work! :D ) .... well, but by the time he brought it to me, he only had these two... and I was a bit too embarassed to ask him about the third one (since he would immediate realize how familiar I was with the game and probably hate me forever :D)
To that little bit, I miscalculated .... :bandit: :alien:
oh.. Ray, I am still waiting (itching) to see your plot ... my Old Friend :)

Thanks for the response. I'm saying in RS I hammer away forever to eliminate a unit. Assaults are about the only way to kill units but only one or two can be conducted each turn. I hope West Front progresses faster and has more variety in units and terrain.
I can get the original West Front used from a dealer on Amazon.com for $13. Will that get me in on all the mods and scenarios I've read about?

Dale...
Try and find a Europe in Flames or World At War battle pack on Ebay or somewhere.. see if someone has one for sale.
With either of those two, the West Front and East Front 2 cds will be up to par.
The World at War East Front 2 version has an additional expansion pack included (Fall of the Reich) and uses the 1.03 patch which allows for night fighting (flares, etc) ... only problem is that few use it.
Remedy to that though is installing a second EF2 1.03 and overwriting the patch with the 1.02 available at Talonsoft. I'm pretty sure that works.. :)
West Front alone is still a great CD if you can find it!!! Just doesn't have all the scenarios available.
You'll also find a plethora of user made scenarios available wargamer.com for EF2 and West Front.
Hope this helps
Take care and good luck

Thanks for all the advice!
Is there a good tank encounter downloadable somewhere for RS?:)
Chip's and Bit's has a number of these games and at a good price.I got RS gold for 19.95
I stand corrected CDaccess has europe in flames for 19.95.They are pretty reliable and get you the game within 3 day's
I don't know if it's a missprint or not but I checked amazon and they listed world at war for 74.99 and europe in flames for 49.99
I can get West Front for $11 total (inc manual ... or
Europe in Flames for $26 total.
Does Europe in Flames include more scenarios for West Front?
Will West Front play East Front scenarios?

Europe in Flames includes West Front with scenarios from two expansion packs BP1 and Sealion - so yes, more scenarios.
Europe in Flames also includes East Front 2!
Europe in Flames is by far a better buy than West Front alone.
West Front will NOT run East Front 2 scenarios.
Hope that helps
Take care and good luck

That helps.
(I take it World at War includes everything but is pricey.)

World At War includes all of the World War 2 Campaign Series games and their battle packs. (West Front, East Front 2 , Rising Sun: Expansions included (IIRC) BP1 and Sealion for West Front, Fall of the Reich for East Front 2 and Rising Sun's Imperial Strike)
It's the best of the best, so to speak. Hence the price :)
And, there is now another expansion available from The Blitz wargaming site for East Front 2 which adds new units, new OOB data and new scenarios. With one more expansion for EF2 to follow and another for West Front!
Hope this helps
Take care and good luck

PS. Divided Ground, also part of the Campaign Series, revolves around the Middle East Wars and is not included in World At War
I'm buying Europe in Flames from Half.com for $13.48. Not bad, huh?
So, is there a Middle East (Arab-Israeli) compaign somewhere?
What's East Front 2 ?:crosseye:

Hi Dale,
Hope this finds you well...
""I'm buying Europe in Flames from Half.com for $13.48. Not bad, huh?""
Excellent deal! You'll be happy with the purchase! The Europe in Flames disc set includes West Front and East Front 2. The key discs to keep you entertained for years!!
""So, is there a Middle East (Arab-Israeli) compaign somewhere?""
Yes there is and it's called Divided Ground. Here's the description at the Talonsoft website.
There are also some MODs available for Divided Ground, in particular the Vietnam MOD. Great game, even if only for the MODs!!
What's East Front 2 ?
Talonsoft released the original East Front in 1997, if I recall correctly. East Front 2 was released a couple years after with the latest player requested modifications. East Front 2 is now the standard for Campaign Series ... most user created scenarios and campaigns are designed for East Front 2... as most users play East Front 2!
Excellent choice on Europe in Flames!
Take care and good luck

I have my copy of Europe in Flames--both CDs. I found East Front's manual. Where is West Front's manual?:(

The East Front manual works for West Front too..
The only thing you are missing is the unit tables for West Front, which you can find by scrolling down to the bottom of this page..
http://www.talonsoft.com/warroom/index.html
To where it says
"Download the Europe in Flames Game Manual (6 MB)."
That has details for both East Front 2 and West Front.
Hope that helps
Take care and good luck

The EFI-Manual turns out to be 187 gif files that have to be viewed one at a time ... or is there a way to incorporate them into the pdf file?
The info is available in the game but I thought a hard copy would be nice.

Tell me what exactly are you looking for from the West Front manual and I'll see what I can dig up for you.
Take care and good luck
Jason Petho
:hmmm: Well ...uh ... I'm not sure. What's in it? If it just says what East Front's manual says, don't trouble yourself. My Rising Sun manual had Scenario Charts and Unit Data in the back. I have none of that info for EF or WF. The F2 key provides it for my side but not opponent. That's all I meant.

If you wish the scenario briefing sheets, I'll have to email them to you as the file is too large to attach to the message board.
Let me know

Dale...
You should find in your email the following documents for West Front
WF - Scenario Briefings
WF - Scenario Data
WF - Tutorial
WF - Frequently Asked Questions.
These should give you the information you are looking for.
Hope all is well
Take care and good luck

What is a Zero Objective? It's already "owned" by my side and appears to be some sort of exit hex--it's at the top of the map. But since there are several objetives with points to be captured and held, I can't see how I'll hold those if I exit my units!
The zero V hexes don't have to be held but you can gain victory points by exiting units off the map through them. You'll get the full point value of all units you exit through those hexes and as you do the zero will change to the corresponding point value.
Thanks for the “Zero” hex explanation!
Now here's something to ponder: Does East/West Front favor infantry in cover? We all know infantry has an immense advantage in a city when fighting armor, while armor rolls right over infantry caught in the open. Does this gaming system reflect that? We know city hexes reduce damage, but if it does so for both armor and infantry that’s not realistic. Infantry will last longer in the city but so will armor.
I performed a little experiment: I created a simple map with a city and open ground and “paired” up strength 4 Panzer IVHs with strength 6 American engineers—three in the open and three in the city. They had approximately the same attack strength. The I played it controlling both sides until there was only a unit left in each little encounter.
Anyone want to know the results? :bandit:
