Hey folks..I'm currently the Germans in Counter Attack at Yakhroma- about to have my back broken. I'm wondering how other players have dealt with this scenario, or how they think that they would, from the German perspective. How would you achieve a draw?
The scene is this: The Germans in the Soviet Winter Offensive '41, have a tenuous southern bridgehead that is all that stands between their lightly held northern side of a frozen river, and the advancing Russians. The German armor situation is what it should be for the period: not favorable  If you're not familiar with the scenario, just open it up w/o FOW and check it out- I'm not going into the OOB here, just generalization. German supply is 70, and infantry is light and starts diminished..basically- the German is brittle..has some capabilities- especially in artillery, and mine defenses, but cannot afford to sustain losses- you have just 2 platoons of Pz IV's- and it goes down hill from there quickly :OHNO: The Russians have a wealth of men and superior armor(as it appears from the German perspective..you might not feel that way if you are the Russian!) - as they should for the scenario depicted.
I think I made a major mistake in attempting to defend the bridgehead...the problem is, its worth 300 points in total to hold it...which would get the Russians out of major, and into minor defeat territory to take it, so I decided to invest heavily into it, committing everything but a company of infantry, some AT guns and my HQ's and arty...it ain't over yet, but even trying to make the most of terrain- I'm being mauled by the Bear(Robert Cousins by the way, with a rock solid attack)and once he breaks through, there will be nothing there to oppose him :dead:  I can't really retreat- to go back across the river under his guns would be suicide. As is staying:violin:
I think the only real option for the Germans is at the beginning to withdraw from the bridgehead, back across the river and take to the urban hieghts, and hope to use AT and the little guns and arty to make the Russians pay on the way over..and when they make it, withdraw somemore and make them go street to street. Maybe leave a small strike force of scout cars or something hidden in the woods south of the bridgehead, to harry the Russians once they are committed to the crossing. You play for a draw, or if you are lucky, a minor allied defeat.
What does anybody else think here?
