On Yankee Station
by Christopher Comars
Date/Time: 23 October 1966
Size/Duration: Large
Location: Gulf of Tonkin
Playable sides: United States, Russia
Type: ASuW,AAW,ASW
On 26 October 1966, USS Oriskany (CVA-34) with CVAW 16 embarked was conducting intensive air operations against targets in North Vietnam. At about 0730 local time the carrier was racked by a major fire and series of explosions. 44 crewmen died and the official explanation was that the cause of the blaze was an explosion in a forward flare storage locker on the hanger deck.
What if the disaster had some other cause? This scenario lasts just over three days and terminates about the time the real fireoccured. By the way, some wag has hung a 1986 calendar on the wardroom bulkhead. You know of course that it is really 1966 and by 1986 people may well be living on the moon and this war just might be over. Play along for now though.
