I was over at the Matrix forums this morning and lo and behold, a mention of how things are progressing regarding Combat Leader. This is a recent post from David Heath from 5/5/2005;
ORIGINAL: David Heath

We are testing the combat systems now and we FINALLY have complete OOBs. I see if Tom or Louis have time to give us a screenshot or two.

DavidSeems they may be farther along than we thought (at least we can hope). :D Once they post some more screenshots I'll update this thread.

My first reaction was to say something nasty and pessimistic.

But damnit, there isn't a game out there I am likely to want more than this one.

I want to be wrong, man I have never wanted to be more categorically incorrect on something in my life :)

My credit card will be in use the second the game goes on sale.

But I have sat here waiting for so darned long, and I have watched too much of the saga I suppose.

Even the ASLRB2 hasn't been this maddeningly slow in coming hehe.

Things on the CL Forum have been unnervingly quiet for far too long.

I fear that the simplicity of the SP gameplay will be sacrificed in CL... There is a fine balance in the "weight" of rules... Lets hope that CL will not fall under its own heavy weight. :smoke:

Anyway, WinSPMBT is next on my agenda... :whist:

This is THE game Im waiting on.Every time they release info on the game it just gets better and better. To good to be true? Have to wait and see. One thing I feel they should have done is just kept it to 50 metres a hex rather than making the game more complicated to develop by having either 50 or 15 metre hexes.

Other news is that Close Combat Red Phoenix will carry on in the Close Combat tradition as destennier have bought out Atomic. IF it has that old CC magic I may buy it (Not interested in the theatre though).

Last but not least the good news that Close Assaut is still plodding along and will now take place in the Eastern Front. This Im sure will save time on developing as CL should have led the way.

I couldn`t agree more with wodin. Everytime i drop by (is it really all those years ago when I started checking it out!!!!) it just keeps getting better. The amount of detail seems vast. But, will it be still playable? have they got the balance right? only time will tell.....

Found a "bad" message about Combat Leader's future posted at the SPWAW Depot so I went to the Matrix Games forums to see what I could find and this was it..... :blab:

Hi Guys

We are all at GenCon and we all just had a long meeting about Combat Leader. The game will not be released at all this year. There is still much to do. We are also considering other options and we keep you inform as we go.

David Heath
Matrix GamesHopefully, one of those other options is NOT to drop the game.

I'm imagining that in that meeting they were running a copy of winSPMBT. Then they decided that releasing CL with only the west front in WW2 was far to shallow a game. Now with renewed vigor the CL team will make the right decision and make Combat Leader 1939-2020 ,instead of a measley cross of iron.

I remember going to the Matrix Forum years ago and reading all the post on CL. Then months dragged to years and I moved on. This is the only forum I attend know. When and if CL comes out I will be purchasing it as well.

Yes me too, I first saw thier wonderful anouncments back in 2000.
You know they had a release date of spring 2002 originally.
What were they thinking? Obviously they had no idea what they were getting themselves into and have been seriously dragging thier behinds on this one. :whist:

I too hope that CL manages to break out of its rut eventually. It would be sad to see it suffer the setbacks that have plagued one of my favorite games, Harpoon, for the last several years. Fortunately, older versions of Harpoon already existed and, the game has been kept alive and evolving my a wonderfully dedicated group of enthusiasts. Anyway, until Combat Leader amounts to something, Steel Panthers it is!

If you read the posts about CL over at Matrix they talk about the idea that the whole project will be handed over to 2 x 3 games and they will develop it as SP4. From what I can gather from offical Matrix people talking about it,they just arent happy with what they have.

I wouldn`t be that surprised if 2 x3 games gets involved at some point. When I seen talk of SP4 by 2 x3 games, I thought it was very close to CL and some sort of "merger" of the two games may take place.

Joel Billings - In 1979, just out of college, Joel founded Strategic Simulations, Inc., better known as SSI.

Gary Grigsby - Who designed; Kampfgruppe, Mech Brigade, Panzer Strike, Typhoon of Steel, Overrun, Steel Panthers, Steel Panthers II and Steel Panthers III.

Keith Brors - Whose credits include work on Steel Panthers, Steel Panthers II and Steel Panthers III.

Yes, exactly, that was my thinking. :)
