View Full Version : Rumble in Pennsylvania - Tournament Kick Off!
Ok, the e-mail was sent out last night to get this pupy rolling. At kick off time we had 16 participants, but we can add more in if people are interested. Just let me know.
Check the "Tournaments" link under the WARS section for more info on this event.

Rich - thanks for organizing this. It should be tremendous fun! Here is the direct link to the tournament - http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=37
The first scenario has been completed! How are the rest of you guys doing?
Gary and I are on turn 4. (We didn't do it as a simultaneous mirror).
Mr booboo and I are on turn 6. We also didn't do mirror for our fight.
Mike and I didn't mirror (at the same time) either, but we're well into the second scenario now.
If anyone has questions on this please let me know...I'll be out of town all weekend, but will check back in Sunday night.
Regards,
Rich
We've had yet another player join the ladder and want to join the Tourney...I've sent some feelers out to people, but no bites yet. Anyone have 1 more person they could invite to join us? Would give us an even 20...
This will be the last match to join as well, if we wait any longer they'll end up holding us up.

Has the tourney scenario been added to the WARS system? Went to report our first game and didn't see it there? Or am I just not looking for the right name?

Yes, Rich added it. It's "Revised Oak Hill (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-ladder-games.php?ld=on&ladder=&scenario=5187) "
For future reference the names of all the scenarios are listed at the top of the Tournament page.

I'm on T4 of both Oak Hill games. Seems like a tough battle for the Rebs. In my game as the Rebs, I captured all the Union artillery on my first move, thinking that would ensure a victory. Yet, with Iverson's entire brigade (less one regiment) routing on T3, the going seems very rough for the Rebs - just too many Yanks!
Yet, so far of 8 game reports (http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/wfhq-ld-ladder-games.php?ld=on&ladder=Civil+War+Battles+%28CWB%29&scenario=5187), we have 3 Reb minor victories. I must be missing out on the Reb strategy!
This scenario is more like a bar room fight than an ACW battle.
For the Rebs, the key is to get the Yanks running as quick as possible. The more of them you can make rout, the less you have to face in subsequent rounds. And timing is everything. Quick, sharp strikes.
I think Rich has it exactly right for this one as the Confederates. You have pick the right points in the Union line and attack frontally and aggressively. If you can get some of the Union forces to rout (esp. on the first turn) you can handle the reinforcements. It's also nice when you don't get too many "low on ammo" men--thus I always set the autodef fire to the shortest range for the infantry! (I hope we get ammo wagons in the next round! :) ) I have a major victory by a wide margin in points on turn 5 so it looks like I'll probably hold it, but you never know.

... It's also nice when you don't get too many "low on ammo" men--thus I always set the autodef fire to the shortest range for the infantry! ...
How do you do that?
(I hope we get ammo wagons in the next round! :) )
No worries there, I put supply wagons in both of the next scenarios.
They will both also be much different than this opening round. Longer, 16 & 32 turns respectively, played on bigger maps with more forces. Both should fight more like a traditional ACW fight than this has. Both are also meeting engagements, so there will be no elimination of units on the first turn. Just not possible.
How do you do that?
Go to the A/I menu and choose "Adjust Auto Defensive Fire". A Dialog box will come up that gives you the option to adjust the ranges a unit will fire at for both Infantry and Artillery.
As of this afternoon exactly half of the games for this round are completed. Not bad...less than 2 weeks into it. At this rate I'm sure we will complete this round ahead of schedule.
The top 3 players at this point are:
Genslack: 20
Rahamy: 16
Reiryc: 14

oh ... you won't see me up there! My Rebs had 7 units rout on T5; I'm just praying for an end there and hoping that capturing the Union artillery will keep me at a draw.
My game as the Union ... odd to me. I hold both objective hexes, lost one or two guns due to cannon fire, and I'm driving the Rebs back. Yet, the vp score is a 4 ... sometimes going to a negative to give me a marginal victory but could easily end in a draw.
I need to start reading more tips on winning! :cheeky:
Only 5 games left outstanding at this point, and at least 2 of those should finish this weekend. So very close to moving on to round 2!
We've had another end game report come in, and this one changed the top three list! It now stands as:
Genslack: 20
Shotgun Messiah: 18
Rahamy: 16
Only 4 matches left open at this point...

Three games left to go. Ralph Peterson, swampfox_csa, and hrik, how goes the battle? (You fellas are worrying me a little; I mean this is a really, short and quick scenario.)
Hi Rich,
Do you think round 1 will finish up this weekend?
I'll pass on the buckshot blessing. I did need some holy water for my stomach at Pea Ridge back in the day.

You know I was only foolin around when I said I wanted to play Slack next....I really had no Idea that if I played hard the first round I would end up against him... If only I had known I would definatly thrown the first two games like a punchdrunk boxer.. Bitter, Bitter Dregs!!!!
Oh yes I didn't get a file Rich!!!
Hi Lee,
Pairings were simply done going down the list, matching the top two players and working my way down. The only exception to that was Atle & Liveline, which played each other in the first round. They had the same points as another pair so I split them up.
Regarding the file, did you not get my e-mail at all? I did not include a bte file this time, just figured I would let you guys fire it up. Let me know...
Regards,
Rich
Rich,
I sent the files to Lee so we should be on track.
