View Full Version : Interested in these games
I have most of the Panzer Campaigns and Modern Campaigns series, and I like them a lot. Tiller's games really appeal to me. The Civil War series looks interesting to me, and I was wondering:
1) Similarities/differences to PzC.
2) Which one should I buy to gt started.
Thanks :)

Well your maneuver units in the Civil War series will be regiments and artillery sections rather then battalions and companies but there are many similarities between the series. Of course the map scale is different so the firing will be from 5 hexes on in for infantry and up to 21 hexes for artillery sections. Otherwise you maneuver your units to apply superior firepower and assault them out if necessary. I think you will find the transition easy to make.
As far as which game to start with that is a matter of personal choice more then anything. If you are interested in the Gettysburg campaign then that would be an excellent place to start. It has huge maps and more then scenarios then you can probably every play. Peninsula Campaign may interest you more and then that would be the way to go. Corinth represents a lesser known campaign plus there are all kinds of mods out there to play other battles. If you are interested in the lesser known campaigns for Missouri or Arkansas then go with Ozark. I've just gotten Franklin and starting my second campaign and looking forward to it so if you feel like kicking Hood's butt then go that way. In a nut shell, pick the campaign that interests you most and go that route and you can't go wrong. Gettysburg or Peninsula may provide you more opponents for now though.
Just to tag on to Mark's comments, the biggest play differences I find between the two series are:
a) Visibility - you can see a lot further, in terms of hexes, than you can in the Panzer games.
b) Fluid play. My battles in the CWB series are much more mobile than the PZC ones, generally speaking.
If you like the Tiller interface and are interested in the time period then you can't go wrong with these titles.
Regards,
Rich
I actually own Franklin and Ozark but haven't played them in a long time. I should get back in it....
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll get Gettysburg first. I don't know much about the Civil War, and what little I know is mostly about Gettysburg.
5 hex engagement range for infantry...wow, that'll take getting used to. In PzC and MC there are very few direct fire units that can engage at 2 hexes. I'll have to be careful and not march around with my pants down 3 hexes away from the enemy! :D
I also don't know much about the civil war. Most of my time is spent on ww2 and american revolution related history.
That said, the civil war battles are quite fun. There is definitely much greater movement due to the fact that the hexes represent much smaller terrain.
There is the standard way that all these games play, fire, disrupt, melee... So in that sense it is very similar. One of the differences, atleast that I've found with my only title, gettysburg and panzer campaigns is that the maps don't need a continuous front line like that which is often seen with pzc titles. So instead of having 1 to 2 spaces between each unit or stack of units making a continuous front, you'll often see units shoulder to shoulder making that classic battle line of that age.
In some ways, I'm having more fun with my gettysburg title than I am with my pzc titles, so I think it's a good buy to get into.
