ST.PETERSBURG, Russia (UPI) -- A Russian shipyard has completed a new submarine for the Chinese navy, Interfax news agency reported Friday.

The Admiralteiskiye Verfi state-owned shipyard in St. Petersburg will hand over the second submarine built for the Chinese navy on May 5, a company source told Interfax.

The first sub was launched in June 2004. The third submarine in the order has also been completed and is currently being tested at the factory. The fourth vessel will be launched in May, and the fifth in June or July, the news agency said.

Russia is currently building eight submarines for China at a total cost of $1.6 billion.

Here is another source for the submarines: NewsRegister (http://www.w3ar.com/a.php?k=1663)

In October, the Admiralteiskiye Verfi shipyard in St Petersburg turned over the first of two improved Kilo-class attack submarines to China's navy, PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy). The two submarines were unveiled at the shipyard last summer and are part of a Russia-China deal worth $1.5 billion that was signed in May 2002. The contract called for five submarines. Two are being built by Admiralteiskiye Verfi, while two others are being built by Sevmash in Severodvinsk. The final one is being built by Krasnoye Sormovo in Nizhni Novgorod. They look like Project 636 boats.

Improved Kilo's. Diesel boats likely to be armed with "Club" ASM missiles with a range of 136 miles. Very quiet & perfect for blockade of Taiwan if all 12 are acquired by 07' as planned.

If the Chinese succeed in regaining a certain few Japanese held islands & can survey the bottoms of the area... these subs could be in excellant position to interdict somewhat on the 2 Carrier Task Forces - Japanese naval elements included - that would pass through enroute to the declared defense of Taiwan.

The Kilos are certainly a serious threat (particularly the 636), but one should look even further ahead and be concerned about the day when the PRC gets air independent propulsion (AIP) submarines, as well as ironing out the problems with their nuclear powered boats.
