I'm playing a camaign in SPWAW as Germany vs. Russia and my force includes three platoons of Tiger I tanks of which I'm very proud of. I also have the option of upgrading to Panther D.

I always thought Tiger tanks had more resistant armor than Panthers but out of curiosity I upgraded my Flammpanzer platoon to Panther D and send them forward to draw fire from the Soviets. Clang! Clang! Clang! Almost all Soviet shots are glancing off! The Tigers would have absorbed some of those shots, albeit not necessarily with damage that counts.

Is is a fair statement that in SPAW the Panter is more resistant to AP shot because it has better sloped armor even though the Tiger I is more massive?

If yes, I will upgrade to Panther D...I could use the extra mobility too.

I would go with the Panther D mainly for the mobility and increased penetration of the 75mm over the 88mm. You could just upgrade 2 plts and leave the 3rd as Tigers for less mobile situations.

I am slowly starting to prefer Panther over Tiger. Recently I´ve been trying to prove, that a flock of Panzer IV´s together with just a few Tigers and no Panthers at all is über to any other combination that any country could possibly throw at you. How wrong I was. Just take Panthers. Their rate of fire compared to that of Tigers is almost twice as fast.

Hello.
I agree with Kaki.
Nothing will beat the Panther for the Axis.
Larger tanks are specialized equipment and need alot of support.
The Panthers is fast; has long-ranging fire; and can defend itself close-in against overwhelming odds.
But be careful their side armour is thin.

Panthers are better for several reasons:
-better armor protection from the front
-better rate of fire
-about the same penetrarion (actually both of them just kills anything)
-much better mobility

So as long as you are not surrounded and attacked from each direction, you are better off with Panthers!
