View Full Version : Newbie/underacheiver tournament signup sheet
Call the neighbors, and wake the kids! It's gonna happen.
Ok...here's what I came up with. I figured it is best to allow not just new players, but players with losing records also. That way we can get a nice mix of players.
In order to join this tournament, you must of reported less than 11 games or have a winning percentage of less tha 51% as of right now.
We will play miirored rounds to make it fair. I will find a few not too large scenarios.
Remember...if you signup for this tournament, you are commiting to it for the long haul. If you feel you cannot finish or not have a turn rate of a turn every 48 hours, then please do not sign up.
We won't get started for a little while yet, so that can give some of you a little extra time to clear you plate of games.
I will post the rules and list of scenarios later.
If you are interested in joining, please respond to this thread.
Further details to follow.
Cheers,
Ray

Yes! This will be my first tourney - please sign me up.
Hopefully, a lot of other folks will sign on to play also.
Hi Ray,
Count me in, really enjoyed the last one, hopefully I will do better on this one.
Thanks
Hi Krink,
Was wondering- I just signed up for the ladder this morning, so I have fewer than 11 games reported (ZERO). I'd like to sign on to the tourney, I usually can do a slew of turns in 48 hours- BUT, within the next 2-3 weeks I'm moving out of town and into the country- I'll be offline for a short spell; I hope no more than a week, while I get things re established. Should I hold off on joining up for this tourney? I know you probably don't want to commit at this point to a start date(or you likely would have stated the date already), but can you give a "general" estimate? I'd really like to participate, but don't want to hold any potential opponents up during my transition either.
Thankee kindly!
Also- to any of my current opponents(you guys know who you are) I'll give you more details of when I'll be unavailable due to my move when I have all of the ducks in a row, so to speak. Also again, to you guys or to those I have recently been finished off by(that would be you, Stonewall Jason Petho LOL! :dead: ) If any of you play ladder- if you'd like, we can make our current games ladder games- but only if you like. Doesn't matter to me, as we didn't necesarily have that in mind when we began- but I'm open to the idea.

Not a problem. I will consider you signed up. It will probably take a few weeks to get this off the ground anyways.

Well, I think I qualify as an underachiever; if so I'm in. Kind of depressing, though. Couldn't you have made it guys with under 11 games or those with exceptionally good looks?

I would but with school deciding to "pile it on" I can't keep up with a rate like that. No matter how small... Could it wait a month or will it start in a month?

A month sounds just about right. I would like to give people time to signup, and others the time to clear their schedule.

I would love to sign up, as I have never played in a tournament before, but I don't think that at this time I could guarantee a turn every 48 hrs.

Consider me cannon fodder if you please would love to play the ladder whenit is ready. It seems i have been getting a little cocky lately having survived several games until at least teh second or third turn LOL so perhaps i am in need of a attitude adjustmetn (losing) again
thanks nice to see a newbee ladder set starting

Hey Krink
You forgot to allow for ignorant players like me! "Clandestine warriors who make stupid moves and do stupid things in a game! Especially against you!" lol
I got a 50% win rate which qualifies I guess. But unfortunately I can't give the time right now. So I will bow out. But thanks for the opportunity!!
I think it's a cool idea to give some of the less experienced players a chance at stardom. Not to mention the experience of raw combat.
Good Luck to all who play in this tourney! The rest of us CS players will be watching for new opponents, so do your best!

The turn every 48 hours is the guide we have used in previous tournaments. For this one I was thinking of using a cutoff date that the match must be finished by. That way on those weeks you can't do a quick turn rate, you can hopefully make up for it at other times. When the time period is up, the score will be calculated. We will be watching closely though for players that drag out turns while having a winning score to claim a victory. I'm sure that won't be a problem here, cause we have such a great group of members. But I thought I would point that out before someone else brings it to my attention.
Maybe a turn rate like this will help get more players involved that would like to play, but are worried about the time limit.
Cheers,
Ray

Ray. Thanks for the clarification. Sign me up! I have EiF and it shows that my EFII is version 1.01a, and my WF is version 1.05. Do I need to update these for the tournament?

I would recommend updating to EF 1.03.

There is not a 1.03 patch available, only 1.02.
1.03 is found only on the Fall of the Reich expansion CD and the EF2 disc that is found with the World at War compilation.
Take care and good luck

Since we lost the last couple of posts to this thread during the server switch over...I will repost. Ensayne has signed up for the tournament, so that makes 10, and I will cutoff the signups here. Anyone else wishing to signup, may do so but will be placed on the backup standby list.
If you have signed up...please visit the rules page, as the matchups and scenario are listed there.

Say . . . let's do it again!! We can call it something else this time, like, newbie-intermediate-underachievers tournament.
A new tourney is a good idea. We all talked about it a while back but never gotaroundtoit. We should renew the discussions and come up with something?

I would also like to see a new tourney. Which front do we all want to fight on? I don't suppose there would be too many takers for a Rising Sun tourney.
I'd play RS, no problem. But why not play them all? It would be a long tourney, but how's this notion sound?(and I admit to ripping off ideas from other tourney's, these ideas aren't too original) We play in 2 man teams firstly. Teams will facilitate mirrored games to help maintain balance. All scenarios would be mirrored. One team member takes Axis, the other Allies. Perhaps keep this a constant? Members can choose for themselves who takes which. Teams aren't dividing up forces within a game -you play it alone against another team. Next, we have 4 rounds, non elimination. 1941-1944, in order. Each round consists of 3 mirrored scenarios . We'd hit RS EF and WF in each round, and tally team totals, or simply give 4 points for a maj V, 3 for a Minor V, 2 for a draw, 1 for minor D, Goosegg for Maj D... By end of 1944 the 2 teams with the highest scores would vie in another 3 scenario round playing all 3 games, and the winner is the one with the most points at the end. If there are any ties going into 1945 that would make for more than 2 teams, we expand the round to include enough teams for even play -and if necesary, the team with the highest score who didn't make it to '45 would be drafted up -a "wild card" if you will...the winner's here would face off in a final round -this round necesary only if more than 2 teams make it to'45, and the final round would be a single 1945-46 RS scenario. The war ended over there after all! I would suggest "On Hallowed Soil" . It's reasonably balanced and is a hypothetical Japanese mainland scenario that seems appropriate for an "extension". Scoring for this final round would be the "actual" score rather than 4,3,2, or 1 to help minimize a potential tie so that a true winner emerges.
We could call the tourney "Blood And Guts Around The World!" And the winner wins a vitual bronzed trophy of a bag of bloody guts autographed by George S. Patton! Or just bragging rights maybe? LOL
Guys, I have no problem organizing this and keeping track of things, but I also want to play, so I'd like an assistant who wouldn't be my team member to also keep tally of scores...I'd get a web page up to submit results to too,(well to be honest I'll get my wife to do it..she's the brains of our outfit) or we could just utilize a thread to do it, ask for it to be a sticky mayhap?(that would make the tallying more transparent)We should also see if we can run this tourney between here and the Blitz-get a larger player pool, most of us here are Blitz members too afterall. Report the games at both clubs?(and each game within a round should be reported) If there was enough membership over here, it would be interesting to have the teams be made up along club lines -one guy on a team represent SZO, the other guy the Blitz. Hands across the water and all of that!
Anyway...
Scenario selection should be democratic. My assistant and I would choose several scenarios each round as candidates-and accept suggestions gladly for candidates from players, and then each team would get 1 vote each(teams would need to reach a consensus) and we'd vote on the scenario selection by some deadline. Simple majority wins. If there is a tie, we remove scenarios that weren't in the tie, and revote till we get a clear winner. The criteria for selection should have a few rules, I suggest nothing higher in complexity than a 7(nothing against big games, but we are talking about a long tourney here!), and that by using the Blitz's scenario game report function, candidate scenarios should have a 1st side win rate 40%-60%. We might be able to use the poll function for this election? And have roaring parties too of course for each election! Lots of bunting and flags! I'm not kissing any sticky nasty babies though just to get a scenario elected! I draw the line there:cheeky:
Players would need to commit to 1 turn a week minimum to keep this thing rolling. Also, all 3 scenarios should be played simultaneously, so we are talking about a 3 turn a week minimum commitment. Which is slow progress...would be best to get more done, but we all have varying degrees of time to work with. And of course that is "soft" what with vacations and other commitments. You'd just need to keep your opponents and tournymeisters privy is all.
OK, any takers? Anybody with significant time to commit to be co-organizer with me?

Snipped for brevity
Brian,
One idea to add. As we would all be committing to a long tourney, how about everyone who wants to plays in the last round but only the top 2 teams play each other for bragging rights? The rest of us would be playing just for the fun and to see the tourney through to the end.
