View Full Version : The 100 dollar question

Lets say just for the purposes of this discussion here, that games never eventually made it to ANY bargain bin, NEVER ever got sold as used and were NOT obtainable through any covert means ever at all.

You could buy them day one as easily as a year later without trouble, but they were ALWAYS 100 US (using US for simplicity only).

The question is, what games would you yet still own, simply because whether you originally got them at 29.95 or 39.95 or 59.95, they were even worth 100 bucks if you had had to pay 100 bucks?

This assumes we are leaving out the well known Steel Panthers WaW and SPWW2 and SPMBT variants, as they are free games, and it's not possible to compare games against those that are free.

At 100 bucks, is your favourite game still good enough to make the cut?

Games that I would have paid 100 bucks for, simply because I got more from them, than I did from others would include (in no order).

The Operational Art of War Century of Warfare.
Clarification. I might have gone for original TOAW Volume 1, but probably would have passed if it was just Volume 2. I was more interested in the WW2 era battles. As CoW though, it easily qualifies.

Highway to the Reich
Solid game, I have no regrets.

Battles in Normandy
Solid game, I have no regrets.
Clarification. Given an ability to pick Allied German War, it is doubtful I would buy any other WW2 European operational title regardless of it's quality. 100 bucks tends to brutally weed out the redundant.

Tiller Operational Games
If they were competing against AGW at 100 bucks each, it is doubtful I would buy any, as they are not nearly as inclusive.
Well made, but their strength lies in their price.

Tiller Squad Battles
I might end up with something, but I would be extremely choosy.
Chances are strong, I would end up playing ASL with VASL instead though.

There isn't a single RTS game on my list, because only an idiot would pay 100 bucks for any of them. Feel free to list any of yours you wish, but I reserve the right to think you're nuts :)

I certainly wouldn't buy any of the Shooters, as at 100 bucks, I refuse to buy anything that is story driven and only playable once.
And no, I do NOT want to hear cost assessments of dinner and a movie vs how many hours your shooter took.
In the end, I could play TOAW till I'm 80, and still not play any one scenario twice.

I can say Advanced Third Reich would be easily worth 100 bucks.
Currently, at its current state as AWaW, its actually worth 175.

I could say I wish I could get ASL for "only" 100 bucks hehe.
I don't have any regrets paying what I did, justr glad it's over hehe.

I wouldn't because I wouldn't have had $100 availablel for games. I suppose it depends on how you look at it; if I was told that DA (which I want to buy) was one of those multi-million dollar simulations, and that the government was selling copies of it for $100 each, I would buy it in no time (after the first college installment  )!

$100.00 probably equates to about £60.00 over here.

If that were the price, I definitely wouldn't have approaching 250 games in my collection - probably somewhat less than 50 and I'd make damn sure I finished them all too!

I would own TOAW COW and actually play it...lol. (a good game but I hardly play it because I like PzC better.)

Campaign Series. Great replay value with map, oob and scenario editors that are VERY EASY to use.

Combat Mission Series. Same thing.

I am hooked on Panzer Campaigns but not sure if I would own all twelve. My top 6 would be Smolensk, Kharkov, Bulge, Market Garden, El Alamein, maybe Sicily...

The last wargame on my list would probably be WITP because it's just so darn big.

Medieval Total War.

I would even consider shelling out the bucks for Operation Flashpoint in the shooter catagory.

The list is very small considering Ive been playing computer games since 83. Below is a list of games I got about $100 worth of entertainment. These are games I played and played enough to warrant a heavy price tag. However whether I'd have actually bought them in the first place is another matter.

Elite

Gunship

Sensible Soccer

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2

Close Combat Series 2 - 5.

Squad Battles AoTR/ES maybe Korea and Pac War.

Taking it further there are some games out there that havent been made but are in some satge of development or even rumour.I would pay over the odds for IF they stay true to what the current design is.

Combat Leader

Close Assault

Computer Lock N Load

~After reading the question again Ive edited my post. SOme have been removed.

The only game that I would pay $100 for is TOAW ACOW, because you can play just about every battle within the last 150 years with it.

hmm, Harpoon, DA, ATF and TacOps - simply for the fact their developers are willing to update them so frequently.

Only time for one gamely distraction; TOAW. Not a matter of money really. :) Have a lot of other games I never play...

ASL - I'd easily pay $100 for each module if mine were destroyed and I had to buy them all over again. Others I'd buy for $100:

Dune
Streets of Stalingrad
Seven Ages
Napoleonic Wars
Friedrich
Republic of Rome
The Russian Campaign (L2's version)
Europe Engulfed
Twilight Imperium
Up Front and expansions
Wallenstein
Wiz War and expansions

I wouldn't pay $100 for any computer game unless they released the original M.U.L.E. (Commodore 64) for the PC, PS2, Xbox or GameCube.

I have to admit I would buy the core ASL stuff (if I suddenly lost mine) and the Up Front modules. I might even be willing to pay a lot for the old Wooden Ships and Iron Men as well as Caesar Epic Battle at Alesia.

Shrapnel Games has Space HORSE, which is just M.U.L.E. updated.

Hello. I'd pay for just about any game that comes as a system. It is fun to play a variety of games but alas most are narrow in scope and once played thoroughly they lack staying power.
Steel Panthers and Squad Leader despite being wholly unrelated are both good examples of what is a game system in addition to the game itself. You can invent battles and communicate them to others indefinitely. As well editors and special rules can easily be incorporated into each game so that their staying power increases over time.
Alas, game system games quickly eat up alot of playing time just to setup a battle!
And they don't charge extra cash for this only your life's activity levels are affected LOL.

I'd pay $100 for these and other similar fine games.

Considering the fact that 100 dollars is nearly a months pay for me the answer is very simple: Hell no!

Good question. It would be a short list for me:

1)Combat Mission---All of them!
2)Silent Hunter III
3)Total War---Medieval and Rome variants.
4)Some chess program, either CM10K or Fritz

That's about it! I am hoping to add Supreme Ruler 2010 to that list later this week. But the sad truth is that most games are throw-aways. They are fun for a few sessions, but then go stale quickly.

Always like this sort of question....gives me ideas of what to look at next by looking at other people's lists...

Me:

Highway to the Reich (for sure)
IL2 FB/AEP/PF (for sure, though I rarely play now)
Medieval + VI

RGW, but I only just got that...but I like it a lot so far. Looking forward to playing this more, then AGW and eventually RGW II. I reckon this series could be truly great.

Maybe BiN, WitP...I admire the games, but I like the ones above much more. Hell, I'd probably lay down the $100.

WITP cost me almost 100 dollars anyways.

$100 for a game no way! I am too cheap!

Now if you resubmit the question like " If you were going to be isolated somewhere(Iraq, Alaska, Space, Island,Etc) and could only take one game then which one would it be?"

So there leaves out all multiplayer and the only mods are the one you take at the time. Toss up would be SPMBT or fallout tactics.

Or maybe fighting steel!
