Hi,

I have been interested in trying Panzer Campaign and would like to know which title is better for someone who has never played it before?

I am interested in M-G '44 since that is the battle I follow closest. But am also interested in Kursk '43 and probably Normandy '44.

Cheers,
Denis

Denis:

This is a very much a matter of personal taste and I'd suggest is you are most interested in MG44 as a battle, then that would be the best game to get.

All the games ship with a STARTED.HLP file and intro scn which will give you the basics.

Both Normandy and Kusk are large campaigns but they have smaller scns. So if you not used to the system yet, I think MG44 is a better pick as the size won't be so daunting, but then again there are plenty of guys who just love these big Monster CGs too - so it is hard to say what suites you best.

So it is a bit like asking if you should buy a Ford, or Chev when comparing equal models. Hard to say which one is best overall.

MG44, ah, a man after my own heart :)

Seriously though....

MG44 : Relatively short campaign game, airborne drops, low unit density, wide variety of alternate scenarios, good variety of protaganists

K43 : Meat grinder, one hex at a time slugfest, I personally like playing the Germans in this one, many yummy Pz Divs to go around, the Russkies look fun too with their truckloads of Katyushas and mountains of tanks.

N44 : bocage battles can be a grinder, airborne drops, overwhelming allied air and sea power big factor in the balance of power. Obscene advance rates reported by Allied players but modders like Volcano Man have been tweaking the game parameters to get something more historical.

Off hand, I'd take K43 for it's playability from both vs AI and PBEM point of view. But I wouldn't worry too much, you'll proabably end up getting them all eventually. Happy choosing and let us know when you get your game!

Just get all of 'em, that's what I'm doing. :D

Glenn is right, it just depends what type of battle you like.

Another one to consider is Kharkov. There is some hex by hex meat grinders as well as some wide open scenarios where you can run your armor all over the place. A good mix of scenarios.

Don't forget about the Modern Campaigns either. North German Plain '85 is a real gem.

When will the guys at HPS start paying Danny a "finder's fee" of sorts for all his enthusiastic support of their games and for mobilizing new players? :D ;) He surely deserves it!

And it's not such a far-fetched idea to get them all, or at least those that interest you. You see, the funny thing with these games is that despite having the same rules, each one has a feel all of it's own; in a way the battles portraied feel the way you expect them to feel, be it in the libian desert or the normandy bocage. I like that a lot!

Well,

I ordered MG '44 and I will let you guys know what I think of it and PzC when I get it in my grubby little hands.

Thanks for all the input guys. If I like what I get I will probably look at other titles in the series and probably look at something from Modern Campaigns.

Cheers,
Denis

Once you get your game you'll want to play another human PBEM. You should register in the WARS ladder as it will be easier to find opponents.

I'm already registered for the ASL ladder.

Do I need to register again for the PzC ladder?

Once, I get used to the system I will definately be up to a PBEM game.

Not sure about needing to re-register, but I will say this, the AI can give you a good game, but there's nothing like a PBEM match. Most of the regulars keep several games going at a time. I've got 6 myself, including 2 campaign games. The guys on the ladder are solid opponents, and it's a friendly bunch too.

Don't have to reregister, just go to the WARS ladder and checkmark the box for the Panzer Campaign ladder.

Done and done.

Now I will have to find something to do while I wait for MG '44 to arrive.

While you're waiting ... I would suggest Sicily '43. :)
I can't get enough of that one myself!

MG'44 was waiting in my mailbox today after work. Can't wait to install it and try it out. I'll do 1 or 2 scenarios to get the hang of things and will probably me hunting for a PBEM match in a week or two.
