wow! i just played the demo of Close Combat: Invasion of Normandy, and to say the least, i was impressed! it's a pretty cool game for a top-down, 2d game. the action is great, the sound is great, and the details are immense! my only grievance is the slow moving soldiers! i was wondering what stores sell Close Combat games. i don't want to order from the internet, but i haven't seen the game at the big retailers like Best Buy and Walmart. to all you Close Combat gamers: where did you buy your game?

I can get CC5 in the bargain shelves in the UK, the rest I have to track down via Ebay and the like.
I agree it is pretty nice to look at I got mine used but somehow the CD developed a scratch and refused to load after awhile. Also something to keep in mind is the game was programmed for Win 95 & 98. I have ME. The game before the cd crapped out worked fine but the patch for the game did not, so I emailed ubisoft about this. They told me that the game was programmed for Win 95 & 98 and that the box said so. Can you believe that crap!
So anyway if you can find it used or in a bargin bin cool.
You can find CC4 battle of the bulge which has very similiar graphics for about 10$ on NWS online...I think. Normandy seems to be disapearing but bulge is still around online as a bargin game.

Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far is one of the games I'll never get rid of. It's still fun, engaging, and holds up well after all these years. When I run across the others, I'll get them too.

well, i found a copy of CC5 on Amazon for $3.30 (CD in a sleeve only) so maybe i'll ask my dad to get it off the internet anyways...

thanks!!! but i'm in the US...
My favourite was CC2. I enjoyed CC3 but I found the campaign system better in CC2.
CC4 and CC5 I enjoyed aswell. CC5 a little bit more than 4. I never played them as much as I should have.

well, went to BestBuy, they didn't have it (as i expected.) so i got my dad to order it off the internet. $3.30 for the game! woo hoo! i think the reason it's so cheap is that it's not the most popular game, and it just comes in a sleeve, no box.
I wish I was just discovering the series for the first time.
Which one have you bought?
Also the soldiers move at just the right pace. This game is about tactics and realism. Its not an RTS charge infantry fodder click fest.

i bought CC5: Invasion Normandy. i played the demo and loved it to death. about the moving speed, i was using the move button...when i chose the move fast button, that seemed about the right speed. can't wait for it to arrive! :cheeky:
There are 3 speeds: Slow medium and fast
Set it to fast
Remember move fast all the time and your men will become fatigued very quickly. Not a good idea.
Just set the game speed.

Also check out "The Wargamer" website, they have a thriving CC community there. You can join a clan and keep updated on all the latest mods for CCV and some of the others. The two mods that I have is GJS and Meuse.

Matrix games has been developing a follow up to this type of game (Close Assualt),but as usual it's taking a really long time, last I heard they needed to actually finish Combat Leader (which shares OOB's),in order to finish the game. :blab:
Sorry for the false report,I just checked over at Matrix and the game seems to have been cancelled. :o

Close Assault is not cancelled. Yeah, some stuff is overlapping and some of the team is the same but it is in no way cancelled (I work part time at Matrix).
Info from Dave last week:
"Close Assault – Code of Honor, Matrix’s “Close Combat clone,” is, in Heath’s words, “very much alive.” He said that it won't be set in the Pacific after all; instead, it will probably be Eastern Front. He said the game has a huge amount of graphics - big enough that the game may ship on 2-3 CDs. It will have massive terrain maps, multiple variant unit/vehicle graphics, and so forth. He claimed that the game could be done pretty quickly but for one thing: the database work is really “killer”- there is a huge amount of detail to enter for each system, and the information available is often contradictory."
The CSO site is light years beyond Wargamer for Close Combat stuff including the new stuff being worked on (Close Combat: Red Phoenix) by Atomic and Close Combat:Marines which was released last October (I helped on that one for months...learned alot).

i visited that site and browsed through the mods. i saw a lot of sound mods and was wondering if any of you guys tried them out...are they worth it? also, what mods should i try out? i still haven't got the game and i'm already excited to try out everything!
I mentioned "The Wargamer" as a general website where all the clans come together to discuss mods. I would agree with Vic that the CSO site is a good specific site to get downloads. As I mentioned before the "Gold, Juno, Sword" (GJS) mod is very good....so is the Meuse mod.
it's allready been in development for over 5 years
Development is just now starting
Perhaps 12 - 18 months is realistic

Again I wish I had just discovered CC. What joy.
Might have to reinstall and download some of those mods.

I feel the same way about CC2- A Bridge Too Far! ;) I also have
CCIV- Battle of the Bulge which I also like but you can't pick
your units before each battle :blab: . Great games!
CSO SimTek is looking for testers:

I bought Close Combat Trilogy at the local Wal Mart equivalent in 2000... I lost it when my car was stolen and it was in the glovebox! It is a great game.
I got CCIV Battle of the Bulge from a bargain bin, and I have seen CCII A Bridge Too Far for cheap.
But you really have to pay (on ebay) for CCIII Russian Front, which is quite different in character to the other games because of the preponderance of tanks and the vast variety of terrain.
I think if these games can't be marketed by the distributors, then give me more pirates and file thieves!
Call me a heretic, but I can point you to where CC2, CC3, CCIV and CCV are all available for free in the open and in the clear.
And no I am not talking about the evil P2P route.
You generally don't get a commercial cd with a professionally inked label on the cd in all cases. You might not get an original box or a manual.
But aside from that, that's about it.
You shouldn't have to pay some assinine price for ANY of the CC series.
If you don't want the game official original retail form, you don't need to kill yourself in the wallet zone.
CC is a great game. It's also old software. If you paid the 65 bucks I last saw CC3 being sold for, you got supremely reamed for nothing.
Here is one of just several options out there.

It's not a scam people, these people are legitimately offering both CC IV and CC V for free, you pay postage. And in thyis instance, you ARE getting a real commercial copy.
Because so many are offering it for free now, I am too.
Want CC2, 3, 4, 5 get in touch with me. I am not offering anything more than a copy. But all you are going to be paying out is the postage.

Try Comp USA. They still sell the Close Combat Series! They will be in special boxes with several together, or sometimes they will be in the discount area. Good luck I still play Close Combat too. I like Russian Front as the Germans.

I agree. Some of my best moments in gaming have been in playing the German in The Russian Front. Rattenkrieg I believe. Whew! You start to get to know your men and blam.
CC2 was actually one of the 3 games that came with my first computer, it was so great. I actually just played it at a lan like 2-3 months away. *goes to find cd*

I have CC3 & CC5. I haven't played either in a long time. I had CC4 (Bulge) but I found that "armor AI" was just plain dumb (order a tank to a certain position & it would go to to the designated position & then spin it's turret around endelessly  & allow an enemy AT team to sneak up on it: I lost many a Panther that way  ) so I sold it.
Would CC5 work on a machine with XP & SP2? I'm thinking of reinstalling it again.

Has anyone had any success getting any of the CLose Combat games to run under Linux? Either with Wine or Cedega(?), or Crossover Office?
I played these a few years ago and really liked them and would like to give them a spin again. However I'm reluctant to have to do a Windows install to achieve it :)
Cheers

I Have CC2 through to 5. In my opinion probably the best small scale tactics game ever done.
Considering these games are at least 5 years old they still hold up really well. There is a large modding community out there and various other 'modules' have been produced to spice up the game. For instance a Stalingrad mod has been done that runs on CC5.
My call sign 'RRSchultze' is named after numerous years playing on ladders. RR stands for real red a mod that was produced for CC3 for grognards.

I've got CC3 and CC:Marines, but they hardly ever see the light of day. Ever since I got into the Combat Mission Series, that straight overhead view of the battlefield doesn't do a whole lot for me. Plus it's hard to see my soldiers at 1280x1024, which is the native resolution of my new LCD monitor.
I must add, however, that I find the maps really pretty...I know some other games that could greatly benefit from maps like that.
