Hello.
Funny thing about having access to the game's mechanics and statistics. In Squad Leader-COI-GIoA-COD [ASL] and many other games it is very easy to calculate what it costs to do something. This prevents bad habits forming that don't stand up to the light of day. For instance in ASL if you keep your leaders with your units there is a greater chance of losing units. For instance, an 8-0 leader that takes fire and breaks causes all the units to take a morale check in addition to the fire results. Imagine how a gung ho leader taking hiw unit out into open ground then dying would impact his command. :shock:
The result is that keeping a leader with units that are in their opp's LOS/LOF means you will lose more units as opposed to keeping the leader a rout distance away and hidden! But that's a cardboard game -- does silicon vary?

In SP much the same holds in a way. It can be tested in the scenario editor. Select a company in the buy screens and setup the forces to charge across open ground [this really makes things quite clear]. If you keep your "0" units back then your units will likely only suppress and their self rally is tied in to how bad the tactical situation is. Then by replaying the same situation with the leaders taking part. Notice how:
1)fewer units suppress;
2)however, there are more losses from the fire and the units may not suppress. IN SPCAMO SP there is a message that comes up "x hits the deck".
The end result is that units that scout ahead of their command units [no visible or same hex contact] are more likely to survive and by having more trouble becoming unsuppressed they retreat via the AI [again fewer losses] and generally behave less like supermen preventing the controling alias from walking himself into trouble. [Since it is not as likely they would suppress with their leader].

Of course the down side is that any counter-attack that catches these units immediately destroys everything with greater ease and little if any return fire.
Especially if they bring a command unit along.
(sigh).

:surprise: expected/unexpected.
