OK in efforts jump start this forum I thought I would propose a question

What size scenarios do you like the play the most in terms of map size/complexity in CS.

Then after you vote explain why you like that and not the others.

So I'll go first my personal favorite is a medium size. I feel that these in the complexity range of 4-6 suit my fighting style the best. If I go to large I feel very overwhelmed and not sure to do with all the units. And if its to small I feel my self wanting more options.
Ok so lets here what you guys think.

I chose 7-10, always loved mammoth games you're never able to finnish, like Showdown at Borisov :cheeky:

I voted for 7-10, although I tend to prefer the 10+.

I voted for big - I'm currently in the second year (RL) of a PBEM game of Hells Highway. (around 8 hours per Allied turn  )

I prefer the medium size games, though I will play a larger size game on occasion. If I play the larger size games I tend to forget to move/use some of the units each turn as I get impatient!!

Good poll Mr. DJ.

I had always preferred the medium sized scenarios, but since I got introduced into a team game, 32 turns and a complexity of 10...I'm hooked. There are so many small battles within the game. Some you win, some you lose. I find myself itchin for my turn to come back so I can get back at it. It sure is time consuming though.

Cheers,
Ray

I must agree with large scale team game I've had the privalage to play in one team game and it was the most fun I've had with this game so far. Hopefully we can organize a team game in the near future. I just wish I had the time to organize it. And since I've only ever played one I doubt Im qualified. But that might be a good topic for my next pole.

I prefer large scale 8-10 in complexity with enough room to move. Say 100 to 150 square in hex map size. The smaller scenario tend not to have the troops so a lucky shot by your opponent on one of you're good units and its an agonizing defeat!

The large scenarios also give you the ability to handle combined arms teams better not to mention coordination of supply and artillery. If you lose in a particular area you usually have troops available to plug the gap and continue with a counterattack. The smaller scenarios 1-5 don't give you that ability. In fighting a long large battle you get the task of moving and coordinating your artillery as the battle proceeds further away. On the reverse you have a chance to practice the procedures of delaying action and setup to a new line.

This leads me to another point about the CS system. It took me the longest time to realize the system at its best doesn't center around concentration of force to smash an enemy but instead, to me, centers around movement and manouever to oppose the flanks cutting off small bands and crushing them. This is when I like the system the best! Movement and threats are so powerful in this system!

Thanks
Big Ivan :)

I pretty much agree with Big Ivan. I love large battles, and room to maneuver is important.

For example, "Verdun on the Volga" has a large # of units, but no room to move. Some medium-complexity scenarios have large maps, but a sparse # of units.

I'm partial to corps-sized dynamic campaigns. They take forever to play, but that is what makes them fun, imo.

I, like 4 - 6 size games, but ocassionally dip my toes into a 10. I find i can play more of the smaller ones as i try to keep 3 - 4 games going at the same time. However, its a balancing act as the larger games give you a broader sweep and more time to ponder where you went wrong :-)

I love the concept as does Ivan of the ability to fire and manuever, which is usually why i prefer when creating a scenario i usually create ad-hoc groups and units for both sides and some of these battles have been very intense in their play and surprising in their outcome, such one i created using a totally ficticious setting of the soviets using a end around near berlin to stumble on a reforming panzer kampgruppe that was reeqipping wiht the new panther two talk about a surprise the germns beat the red of the russians even though they were ill prepared to deal with the surprise.

Depends on the scope and mission in the game, Size 10 is fun as it includes a lot of unit, but badly designed and balance ( I have seen some...) Itīs a nightmare, and a size 3 can be so good if it is done correctly. The bigger is not naturally better, then I woulld be doing Axis and Allies.

Since we're on the subject of large scenarios, I thought I'd ask about the largest scenarios in the campaign series, because, for one thing, I'd like to play them. I would love to know which scenario has;

The largest number of total units?
The largest map?
The most points required for major victory?

I believe I already know the one with the most turns; Volga Inferno; it has 190 turns. I told Robert (scorched_earth) about it and he seemed very interested. It's basically a completely redone "Verdun on the Volga," and it looks awesome.

Later everyone.

I like the larger scenarios, but not when I'm short for time and especially not when I'm getting clobbered!

Hells Highway beats Volga Inferno on all three counts - total units 7 Allied Divisions (not sure about the Germans), over 300 turns, and the map covers the entire area of operations for Market Garden :crosseye:

Holy cats! - thanks for the reply Wolf.

So, where do I find this incredible scenario? I dl'ed many CS scenarios from theblitz.org, and noticed this scenario isn't on my list.

Is it on the blitz expansion disk #1? I haven't rec'd mine yet in the mail.

Later folks. :cheeky:

PS. The longest scenario I am aware of is one called "The Long Sweat" which portrays the entire Guadacanal Campaign. If I recall correctly it is 3,200 turns. I did attempt a play by email of it, but turned into a waiting game for many tens of turns with one opening the game file and pressing end turn.

Good idea, but poorly executed in design, in my very humble opinion.

Downloaded to my HD. :) Thanx Jason.

Question; Jason, (or anyone) is there somewhere on theblitz you are looking for this scenario that I'm not? I couldn't find Hells Hwy on my own. The reason I ask, is it occurred to me there may be a number of scenarios, possibly big ones, that I am overlooking.

Now if you'll excuse me, I *have* to take a look at "Hells Highway"

I did the following:

1. Went to the "Scenario" section of the Blitz, under G-4 at the top.

2. Clicked on the link to: CS: West Front Scenarios

3. Selected from the "Listing page" tab "Listing Page 12(Grebbeline 1940 - Hopeless Has 'Hope' In It)

4. Pressed "Go"

5. Scrolled halfway down the page to find "Hell's Highway" and selected it.

Voila

Hope that helps
