Q: What body of stalwarts was mustered into the defense of Washington when Confederate attack seemed imminent?

I'm going to go with the Veteran Reserve Corps, the guys who were wounded badly enough or sick enough to not be on the front lines but who still wanted to and were able to serve their country. They stopped Early's Confederate Second Corps long enough for the Union VI and XIX Corps to come to Washington's defense.
