We've not had an open chat for quite some time, so I thought it was time we set a date for the next one!

On Sunday, the 25th of May, at 8:00 PM GMT, let's all get together in the chat room, and banter a bit! A great way to meet some of the members, and get to know everyone a little better!

Maybe as a topic of discussion...

Is that a chat where you can join with a real IRC client?

I think last I tried this one was Microsoft's flavour of Java only.

I'd really like to chat about getting a PBEM carrier started, my attempts so far bogg down in overwhelming scenarios.

No, you just need java installed, as you say.

I wouldn't have complained if I didn't test with my JVM (I can only use the Sun JVM, not the Microsoft one) and it doesn't work.

We also had the same discussion some time ago and there were plenty people who couldn't use this applet.

What's your OS?

And which java version are you using? I had trouble witha previous one, but DLing Webstart fixed me up.

Redwolf

Linux, FreeBSD, sometimes MacOS X.

Jdks are various versions of 1.3.1 and 1.4.0.

My windows computer I use for games also has the MS JVM replaced with a Sun JDK for security reasons so it probably won't work either.

Why exactly can't we use some IRC-compatible chat server? That way people can use either a Java applet (if placed by the server admin) or a real client.

Go a ways back into the forum, and you'll find a few threads on that. We looked at it, but this was the best route to go without paying $$$.

Well, you don't need money for it :).

I can't think of a single IRC network that makes you pay to use it...

There are a million free to user IRC clients out there (that don't have annoying pop up ads). A popular one would be http://www.mirc.net

And there are a few other (free) Java irc clients out there that allow you customize the network/channel that the IRC client connects to, meaning whatever IRC network you decide to establish a channel in can be reached via the Java client or a stand-alone IRC client.

Also I have Sun's JVM installed (JDK 1.4) and I can run the Parachat applet OK.

It can't hurt to revisit this topic. Always have new blood with new ideas which is good.

Here are our requirements:

A static page on WarHQ where anyone can walk in and start chatting, without a need to download a client.

IRC would be fine, but many of our users won't download MIRC or anything else and have it run separately.

Free, or very low cost.

Ideally we could have real-time indicator of who is chatting before you log on...

The solution we have now is imperfect and we know it. We would love to find something better so if there are good suggestions we are listening!

Something better would sure be nice, but count me in as someone who doesn't want it to be a seperate 'entity'. I don't like irc, etc. I'd prefer a static page, as you say; but it would be great to be able to see who was in there without going to the hassle of logging in.

Here's my take on the issue:

There is no Java applet which runs in the majority of browsers.

The IRC protocol is nice because you can get multiple implementations of clients as Java applets and people can use external clients.

The usual IRC networks of connected machines suck. I am using IRC regularily and we always have to move to a single server maintained by one of the participians (especially for TacOps CPXes).

The solution is to run an own IRC server, not connected to the networks, publish the normal IRC data and in addition throw all the free Java IRC applets you can find on it. People can try the applets in order and if nothing works fall back to an external client.

I lost track about the availablity of Java applets you may copy to your own server but it looked pretty good a few years ago. The remaining problem is that the download of the applet sucks some serious bandwidth.

The trick to a reliable IRC experiance is to avoid the larger networks. Smaller ones with less burdened servers and no kidiots trying to flood servers off to steal ops are much more reliable. Starlink.org has been averaging >1 netsplit/day for the last 3 years.

For any who are interested, we could have a discussion on the new multiplayer scenario battle going on. I know I'm pumped on it.
