Steve's Iranian Weapons of Mass Destruction

Having put the election behind them, and with a reshuffled cabinet the President authorised strikes to remove the Nuclear Proliferation in Iran. Two US Navy carrier battle groups, until then on routine patrols and exercises in the area, will make up the bulk of the attack force.

Mike's Makaze

In response to a Chinese incursion the Japanese took formal possession of the Senkaku/Diaoyu island chain in February 2005 and began claiming the waters around the region. China, not to be outdone, claimed the action illegal and it was prepared to defend its historic right with its military might. It is now August and after months of failed negotiations China is ready to challenge Japan's claim.

Enjoy :D

Steve and Klaus have released new scenarios. The scenarios can be downloaded on the HarpoonHQ scenario page:

Steve's Rybachiy Raiders

The dispute between Japan and Russia over the Kurils islands turned into an armed conflict in the summer of 2005. The Delta III's of the Pacific Fleet have until now lain alongside their berths at the Rybachiy submarine base. Recent increased activity at the base suggests these are to put to sea in the near future.

Klaus's Knocking on Heaven's Door

While the battle rages over Western Europe, the Soviet Union is trying to bring the war closer to American homes by employing submarines armed with low yield missiles.

Mike has released two new Harpoon3 scenarios. The files can be downloaded on the HarpoonHQ scenario page:

Tormenta Del Sur

In 1991 Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay founded the MERCOSUR free trade zone to allow South American nations to viably compete with nations participating in the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). Over the next decade this trade bloc flourished as many South American nations gained full or associate members status. However like many dependencies when one member flounders the group is weakened and that is what happened when the Argentine economy collapsed in 2002. Much resentment was formed and as always self interest became a guiding light. In 2004, it would come to armed conflict.

Chile has always maintained a clear separation between other South American Nations. Maintaining a troubled but rich tradition it has decided to unilaterally withdraw from all South American trade agreements so that it may better dictate its own terms and not suffer due to the poor economic policy of other nations. The first item on its new agenda was to close it's southern port of Punta Arenas and the Straits of Megellan to all goods in or outbound. Likewise it closed all its borders to free trade and levied significant tariffs on any goods moving across.

An enraged Brazil and Argentina claimed this was clearly an attempt to gain leverage on an already troubled South American economy. Debate raged for weeks as the three parties negotiated little and postured greatly. Finally on June 1st, Brazil and Argentina announced that if Santiago was not willing to reopen the Southern Port and restore free trade a military solution was viable and they would use their forces to blockade the Straits and Punta Arenas. Chilean representatives left for Santiago with that ultimatum. Two days later Argentine and Brazilian forces began repositioning to back their claim.

Desservir

The Darfur conflict was initiated in 2003 when indigenous rebel groups began attacking Sudanese government targets claiming that Khartoum was neglecting the needs of African inhabitants. Khartoum responded by mobilizing local militias calld the Jangaweed, who carried out a campaign of genocide with the obvious intent of driving ethnic Africans out. Sudan supported this campaign by providing logistical and air support to these militias. The current toll is estimated at over 100,000 dead and almost 2 million people displaced from their homes.

By 2004 the world media had finally drawn the attention of the U.N. and various world powers in hopes of preventing the next Uganda. The African Union and various aid groups backed by the great powers began taking positive steps to end the conflict. 1400 African Union troops were deployed and aid began flowing into the region.

Sudan's response was typical of current belligerents. At the peace table promises were made but on the desert flats thousands more were killed or displaced. Finally, in mid 2005 the world has decided it has had enough. The British, French and the German Air Forces would succeed where negotiations have failed.

Paul has released yet another excellent scenario created with the Colonial Wars database:

http://www.harpoonhq.com/harpoon3/colonialwars/

Gunboat Diplomacy

At one stage in the Borneo Confrontation, there was a force of some sixteen ships operating in and around the waters of Borneo, most of them coming from the 6th Minesweeping Squadron, who's tasks were to hunt, stop, and search small boat traffic. One incident, out of the normal humdrum patrolling, ocurred in 1965 when three minesweepers intercepted and caught three armed sampans, all of whom had been trying to get into southeast Johore, and during the fire fight eight Indonesian soldiers were killed and 19 captured. This scen covers the engagement with added units for both sides.

Quinton has finished new scenario created with the 1960-1979 database:

http://www.harpoonhq.com/harpoon3/scenarios_1960-79/

The Beagle Channel Incident

Situated at the foot of South America, the three islands of Picton, Lennox and Nueva in the Beagle Channel have been the source of tension between Chile and Argentina for almost two centuries. The cause of the tension is not the islands themselves, but rather their associated 30 000sq miles of fishing and mineral (notably oil) rights. The situation has recently become even more urgent following the discovery of large oil and gas reserves in the area. After a year of failed diplomacy and mounting public pressure, Argentina has sent a large naval armada to claim the islands, less than 24 hours later, Chile has responded in kind.
