well i don't see what kind of problem you have because i also have win xp and no problems with updates i upgraded acow 1.04 and then upgraded to 1.06 with the last patch with out any problems despite some i had before with the combat report and sometimes when i'm launching a scenario the game crash but not too often.
may be you can give me more explanation about your problem

He said he has TOAW2, not ACoW.
Search through the threads here. I've heard this one come up recently, but don't remember what the final solution was. It *did* get fixed, tho!

cant find it "Damn CD-ROM" in Talonsoft General Discussion. The fix works for ACOW here, but there's no reason it shouldn't for TOAW II also if you UnSafeDisk the EXEs for this. I did it with TOAWI and it works fine now without the CD.

What I would suggest in return for help (if successful) is that you document how it was done so we have complete coverage (except WOTY).
I have exactly the same problem as screamer, except I have Windows 98. The same error message comes up, I downloaded the 'damn CD Rom, fix, that failed and now I am stuck.
I did by the xplosiv triple pack
probably a mistake!

probably a mistake! Then I'll make you the same offer. I've tried going back and forth on E-Mail and it's a pain and frustrating for everyone. Much easier on chat where I can get the info needed immediately.
Either send me your E-Mail address so I can E-Mail you a copy of MSN Messenger or contact me via MSN Messenger- if/when you have it- on chorn@oceanfree.net.
Instrux for using 'unwrapped' exes.
Open the ZIP files, and then either extracting the files directly from the ZIP file
or after extracting them somewhere convenient first do the following:
1. Back up previous exe files first.
2. Copy (Overwrite) the exe files to your TOAW2 folder.
3. Create a folder in your TOAW2 folder- call it CD for example.
4. Copy the smk file there. You might want to put the whole ZIP file there as well for future reference.
5. Take a back up copy of your registry.
6. Open your registry. Find the Talonsoft TOAW2 entry for CD path. It probably refers to drive d: or e: or whichever drive letters are associated with your CD drives.
7. Change the CD Path to be wherever you copied the smk file to.
(e.g. "c:\Program Files\Talonsoft\TOAW2\CD\" and DON'T forget the last \- that's what I used anyway).
8. Save changes.
It should now work without the CD in the drive and without you being prompted for it- and therefore load much faster.
