Okay, after dealing with a house fire I finally have time to fit in one game. Send me a suggestion for a medium to small scenario and lets see how bad a player I really am.
Forgot to mention that I have ACOW 1.04.
I have a slot available- hows about Middle East 2000 - e-mail me at r.nettleton@blueyonder.co.uk
If you have not found a game yet and you are intersted in playtesting send me an e-mail or respond on this board.
I have a "naval" test scenario between Greece and Turkey (2004 Aegean) that I would like to playetest in PBEM. It uses ground units as naval units (with optional new graphics for subs) and a sea road network. A few house rules are needed but the naval component of the game seems much more realistic.
That sounds interesting. I've heard the idea before, but have never heard of anyone actually making a scenario around it. Have you had much playtesting yet?
Is there any way to change the icons to all look like ships? For example, can you sub out the tank pic and make it into a BB, etc? Or use a modified .exe and have custom units?

The icons can be changed to whatever you want. You can do it with any image editor. TOAW does not care what the icon actually looks like. I modified the Guerrilla icon to represent a sub, an artillery icon for frigates and missile boats and an anti-tank unit to represent destroyers.
The idea here was to use the excellent ground combat mechanics for naval warfare. Now your "naval" units have limited movement (depending on the equipment you assign them), can be interdicted, bombed, and be deployed in Local or Tactical reserve (sort of a naval "patrol"). "Subs" get all the benefits of Guerrilla units.
The drawback is you need sea-roads and must have a house rule to prevent ground units from going on sea-roads and "naval" units from going ashore.
I think it kind of works in certain scenarios but is by no means optimum.
Isn't there a fantastic chance that supply will be all messed up? Does 'ownership' of sea supply roads change hands, the way that ocean hexes do?
I guess if you were also using the roads for supply it might result in some semi-realistic supply results. (Your supply ships are only getting through sea lanes that your naval ships 'control')

Yes and no. My understanding is that sea roads (and sea hexes) always have ownership. The initial default is that Force 1 owns all sea hexes (not adjacent to Force 2) unless the designer has changed ownership in the editor.
Supply can not be traced through a sea hex with no road (or rail). However, it can be traced through a sea hex with road (or rail).
Designers have used sea roads to supply islands and in order to save supply points.
A dense sea road grid will supply all sea hexes with a road sea as long as you control the "right" hexes. It can also supply land hexes through the sea road grid.
It's up to the designer to place the road network to properly balance movement of "naval" movement and supply but it can be done.
Yes, but my point being that you can't 'tell' who owns these hexes, as it won't display ownership. So if a unit passes over them, won't that cut the other player's supply, and he'll not know this (or where it's occurring) except to see that supply isn't getting through?
Interesting situation, given how few and far between naval units are at sea (theoretically). If you really depended on your supply road you'd have to be really careful to maintain your naval 'front line', or else run some units through periodically just to make sure your lane was open. I think the whole idea would be a blast to play. Likewise the supply 'cutter' might just need to run across the whole line each turn. Hmmmm how does this work in EA? can player two cut supply on a sea road by running over it each turn?

That's absolutely true but the same problem exists for any scenario that uses a sea-road for supply. In fact, with a dense sea-road supply there will be several ways to trace supply so in that sense it is better than fighting over a single road. Supply in non-island land hexes will be traced over land and should not depend on the sea-road grid anyway.
The idea here is not to design the sea-roads to specifically supply islands but rather to enable movement of "naval" (ground) units at sea. The designer can make the grid in such a fashion so that islands can be supplied from one or several sea roads making it harder or easier for the opponent to cut the supply.
The initial sea hex ownership should be set in the editor.
Ideally we'd like to have a better naval warfare module in TOAW but until Norm can do that this is one of the many ideas I have played around with. Not the best solution I must say but it's kind of fun.
The Bioeditor is another route with its own drawbacks and advantages.

Uh guys, remember me, the guy who started this thread looking for a game. ;) I have found one so I am set for now. As for playtesting you should really find someone more competent then I am.
