View Full Version : Steel Panthers 3 Poll
Double Deuce
19 Feb 05, 22:44
Just testing the waters. I searched high and low for SP3 related sites and found very few to say the least and may of the ones I did find were no longer operational. Anyone here interested in trying to scrounge up what we can and add a small section to the forums for it? We can also host some of the extra files (new lbm's, scenarios, etc).
Post your comments and vote in the poll?

Doesn't seem to be too much interest so far.

I think that might have something to do with the fact that you can play your turn over and over in SP3 Email games, alot of people can't handle that.
Plus as you pointed out theres not alot of stuff left on the web regarding it.
Most people seem to prefer the refined version of it,SPWAW.
I personally do not because of the limited years involved.
But SPWAW would be interesting online.
My efforts to drum up interest in SP3Online seems to have failed as well.
I like SP3 the most of any permutation of SP truth be known.
Of all variants, it alone is the only one to in one go, allow me to play WW2 right through to modern.
If someone could get ahold of the guts of the game, the code that is, and make the game a design that actually LIKED XP, I would be near front of the line to buy it even though I already own it.
And the first thing I would be inclined to do, is tell those making endless promises that Combat Leader is "almost ready", that they could keep the now long over due to the point of zero credibility disappointment as it was no longer required.
For whatever they plan to make it, we already have a game that is WW2 through to modern, just not individual tanks is all.
Individual tanks is not the be all and end all of my needs though. Platoons of tanks is cool too eh.
I am as much a fan of Panzer Leader as I am of ASL eh.
SP3 is basically my Panzer Leader fix on a computer.
Looking to get a new computer system by the end of the year (or rather, the plan is to slip 50 bucks a month into a hidey hole each month and then buy it for a new years treat on boxing day maybe.
If I succeed, my number 2 system (which becomes number 3) will likely get the Win 95 system if I have to do it, and then I will possibly be able to stop fuming over SP3 not cooperating.
I say promote the game. I have no intentions of abandoning it any time soon.

Matrix owns the rights to that SP3 code, anything that has or hasnt happened with it is to be put squarely on thier shoulders.
An upgraded version of SP3 Online would have been nice for example,or maybe that game they anounced back in 2000 and they never made, Steel Panthers:Modern Warfare. :dead:
I run win98Se, SP3,SP3Online,and SP3:Moderna ,all run fine.

A cool thing about SP3 is that it runs on XP. But what about the bugs that we can't fix in SP3. Will we collect some of the more problematical stuff and combine it into a txt file or other so we know in advance what forces we shouldn't include ... [I remember that barge-carriers could unload a barge per turn per truck! .. them's alot of barges in a 15 or longer turn game!]
Well I'm in.
I'd even vote for SP2 as well :smoke:
If its got an SP in front of it I'll play it.

I remember passing thru a few sites a day ago while searching for stuff by Ectizen .. Chlanda and others!
Shouldn't be too hard to get some files from the Wargamer guys .. they even still have SP3 scen to dload on the web at a variety of locations.
Gus
SP3 is definitely a good idea. I like the brigade and division level.

[I remember that barge-carriers could unload a barge per turn per truck! .. them's alot of barges in a 15 or longer turn game!]This is one of my main concerns. The original code has some issues such as super powerful helo's (I think) and some other things that can throw a scen out of balance. If we can identify these and document for all here, we can build a campaign that addresses and counters them as much as possible.

I remember passing thru a few sites a day ago while searching for stuff by Ectizen .. Chlanda and others!I would like to ask that everyone who knows of any SP3 related website post the link here in this thread. This way we can go through them top to bottom and see what files are out there and who we need to get permission from to use (such as the custom KOB's and LBM's).
I came across a few sites but many of them have not been updated since before 2001. Many of the links don't work within those sites either.

Keep in mind SP3 runs from 1939-1999 as far as years concerned,
what happens after that is beyond the scope of this game.

I had hoped this thread would continue and maybe generate some interest but it seems like for the most part SP3/SP3 Online is a dead issue. :dead:

I had hoped this thread would continue and maybe generate some interest but it seems like for the most part SP3/SP3 Online is a dead issue. :dead:Yes and no. Not much interest it seems BUT I do have it running on my XP machine without problems. I am sure there are more than a couple players out there, just need to locate them. ALso there are no fancy utiities that could aid in running Combat Campaigns so it would be a long shot and thus probably on the backburner for any major efforts here.
Coming late to the computer world, SP3 was my first love in the war gaming department. It is undoubtedly a classic. It would be great to do what we can to keep it alive and vital.
By the way--I did not vote because I never cam across the poll. As big as the forum is these days, it's very easy to overlook things.

This game must still be in demand (although how much I do not know). They have it for sale, with printed manual over at the NAVAL WARFARE SIMULATIONS WEBSTORE (http://www.navalwarfare.org/build/store.php?path=software/genre/turn). Scroll down near the botton of the page.
