It's here! Any recommended essential downloads? The version I got was only the CD, not printed manual. Time to fire up the printer. :(

You're good to go. There is a scenario expansion pack that has another huge number of scenarios in it but they aren't necessary. Just dig in and learn the system.
The link to the expansion pack can be found here:

It's a huge download, but if you get it, unzip it into the \Campaign sub-directory. The engine will then use all those extra scenarios to choose from when moving through a campaign. Not required for sure, but nice to have all the potential different battles. Keeps the level of surprise there for the forseeable future.

And what are your initial impressions thus far?

And what are your initial impressions thus far?So far, I'm impressed with the changes from the TalonSoft series. Specifically, the ability to fire or melee at any point in the turn is a vast improvement as is the automatic defensive free occuring throughout the turn instead of during a specific phase.
I haven't tried a campaign yet but find that option very interesting. Too often, we bloody are armies way too much in a battle, because we know their is no "next" battle. The campaign makes you plan for the next battle.
Graphics - zoomed in 3d is great, zoomed in 2d is okay.

Mine just arrived today. It will take me a while to look around and figure it out.
