My Question is about SPWAW. I have CM, CS, Close Combat, do I need another game?? I realize this is a free download somewhere but I never seem to get the time to download it. Does SPWAW offer anything the above games don't? Particularly for the single player as my game system is not online .

On that note also can you play any PBEM by saving a file to disk and attaching it to an email on another computer????

Thanks for your time!

I got the game after asking about it on this board.I like it i haven't tried some of the other games you listed though i do have CS games and i think this one is a nice compliment to them,it's a bit more detailed and a hell of a time burner.

Hmm if you have CM and CC, the important question is this, are you a gamer that likes 3d and or real time over 2d turn based designs?

Steel Panthers (in any form) is the current ruling king of turn based tactical (if anyone disagrees assume they just don't like turn based tactical in the first place).

SPWaW is of course not the center of creation nor the pinnacle of wargaming, but it is most assuredly the best thing out there for turn based tactical. Don't let the fact it is free fool you.

Steel Panthers is easily one of the most thoroughly supported games out there. SPWaW also has the three Mega Campaigns designed for it (although good luck finding the first two).

If you want to play the game at it's best, you want a Mega Campaign cd. Currently short of sheer luck finding the first two though, you will only be able to find Watchtower.

As for playing it solo, no problem. A Mega Campaign will fold spindle and mutilate you if you blink. The AI plays rough with a player unwilling to think on their feet.

The campaigns/scenarios of the core program are ok, but the AI in solo battles won't impress you much. It's the MCs that will decide if you want to be interested.

Thanks for the info. I had been wondering if the mega campaign was worth the 25 bucks or not. In the mega campaign do your troops move from one battle to another including losses or are the forces pre established for each encounter?

I actually Love alot of different gaming styles. I enjoy Uncommon Valor, CM, BCT/ATF, Tacops TOAW....the the list seems endless! Just ask my wife :hurt:. I am currently working on Airborne Assault, and am looking forward to Highway to the Reich!

Thanks again for the input.

Your force evolves, it gains experience.

You don't pick it out like a shopping trip though, it's assigned. So are supporting elements. And occasionally you don't get it all in the first turn either.

And if you screw up the current battle, you get to suffer in the next by getting a lame mission to restore the boss's confidence in you.

Of course success is also profitable.

And don't think a Mega Campaign is a walk in the park finish it in a few days hard gaming. We are talking months of hard work.

So learn how to make back up saves, cause stuff happens, and you don't need your wife wondering why you can't live anymore heheh.

Besides one be dos and the other being windows and the fact the spwaw has the mega campaigns is there a difference?

They do play a little different, WW2 (MBT) is said to be based on the old SP2 game and is a little more histoically accurate than WAW. WAW is based on the old SP3 game. Les the Sarge may be able to tell you a little more of the differences between the two games.

Hello,

Go for a copy of Medieval: Total War! Its 3D battlefield is a beauty to behold, and it can allow up to 10,000 troops on the battlefields, however, you can call in reinforcements, making the numbers unlimited. At one point, I had 15,000 troops clashing against the same strength of AI's army. More than 5,000 men died, and it was a real beauty, at least for me. It was a costly victory for me, but well worth it.

Actually got that one already...the mix of boardgame, empire building, and realtime "BraveHeart" styled fights are a great mix! I would like to mention Operation Flashpoint as my favorite FPS at least in terms of Single Player. While not perfect the Missions were Great very imersive for a Shooter!

Besides one be dos and the other being windows and the fact the spwaw has the mega campaigns is there a difference?
There's a tremendous difference betwen the two. As has been stated, SPWW2 (MBT) was based on the SP2 engine, and is DOS based. SP:WAW is based on the SP3 engine and is (mostly) Windows based. I say mostly because there are parts of it that actually run in DOS (especially in the Megas).

Being DOS based, the graphics in SPWW2 are quite different from those in SP:WAW. Which is better? That's best left up to the player, but I'm partial to SP:WAW.

A major difference between the two is speed. On today's fast hardware, many players find they need to slow down their system to play either game, but being Windows based SP:WAW makes it a little easier to do.

I think, to really make up your mind, you need to play both. But I will tell you, you will never get a better deal than in buying a Mega campaign for SP:WAW. The amount of detail that goes into one, and the hours of testing and researching, as well as the "extras" that are contained in it (historical notes, photos, documents)... well, let's just say it's a true slice of history in a very nice package. And I'm not just saying this because I helped create one either. :)

It will be interesting to read your observations and comparisons of the three, from the perspective of a new owner, as you explore all their features. I'm especially looking forward to your response when you do get one of the Megas. :)

Have you have the chance to get SPWAW 8.0 yet?

I have Dial Up and the DL is too big. I need to find someone to burn me a copy.

Some one was kind enough to burn be 7.1.

The copy I have is the one with the flawed installer. It still works but you have to do some manual adjustments and tweaks to make it work properly. I have DSL and plan to download the revised installer version hopefully thi weekend, when the server trafiic lets up some. As soon as I do I plan to burn some copies and send out a limited number of copies. If no one gets you a copy sooner I can shoot one your way. I'll update you when I have the new one.
