Used to play Jane's Fleet Command a lot - loved it to bits, but it wasn't mine (belonged to my housemate of the time) and so I don't have access to a copy any more.
I used to play the Falklands scenario a lot, and also the one where the Royal Navy engages the French Navy in the English Channel. :D
Riding alongside missiles as they screamed through the air was always fun - little things please little minds...

Have played Harpoon 2 and 3 for a long time. Always found the AI opponent a bit weak, so I am looking forward to the release of Harpoon Multiplayer. Have just pre-ordered Dangerous Waters- that one looks interesting...

Is it possible to play in a PBEM format of any kind, or is play strictly limited to battles against the computer?

PBEM format is somewhat similar to what is used by a turn based game like Steel Panthers. Two players will stipulate to a time limit and then they will each play turns based on that time limit. Usually 30 minutes is the accepted value. It's not real time but it works.
As for MP, I have just returned from a trip to New York for AGSI and missed the latest build but the last report I had (i only returned yesterday) was that all major bugs had been killed. We will soon be ready for public beta. The final decision will be left to The Man however.

I voted Harpoon III, besides that, I'm still waiting for my DW and Silent Hunter 3 arriving.
Have been playing a lot of 688 and Sub Command.
Harpoon III is a hardcore naval sim, but one has really to go to HarpoonHQ to get their databases and scenarios IMHO.

Of course, there's a dozen people in this forum alone stating the game sucks.................. oh well :D
One of the many lessons I've learned from wargaming: there is plenty of room for a wide variety of tastes, and therefore, "each to his own". You hit upon the fundamental point in your original post - it's "fun". That's the only prerequisite that I know of, and too often this most basic element is lost in the experience.

About 4 years ago, a MONSTER PBEM was run, using the Harpoon paper rules for the Naval warfare, and Tacops for the ground warfare. This thing was freakin' huge. Had over 30 people playing, 3 umpires (poor bastiges!), God only knows how many maps and spreadsheets. It was run via email, and IRC, and had it's own webpage. The thing took 2 years to run.
Every once in a great while, someone gets a group of idio...ah, serious gamers together in IRC, and does a PB-IRC game, with someone running a game in the background, and telling the two sides what they could "see". Very complex stuff, especially using the Harpoon system. Quite a few Harpoon players could find themselves in the same position as Tom Clancy, when the CIA asked him where he got all his information for "Hunt For Red October"...and of course, he said...."Harpoon!" A good friend of mine, who "wears the suit", once told me that we were a scary bunch, and he had to be careful what he said around us, because we could "read between the lines" so good, and might figure out something that we'd be better off not knowing

Hi Don,
Will there be any discussion of naval wargames that are for either board or miniatures?
Dont play any on PC,but love Harpoon 4 for modern, used Command at Sea for WW2,but prefer Action Stations! and Flaklighter for WW2 coastal forces.

Why not? Go ahead and discuss paper rules or miniatures!
Harpoon 4 deals with both and there are quite a few fellows that have both Computer Harpoon and Paper rules. Some DB editors follow the Harpoon4 rules quite religiously.
To be honest, when they guys start talking about Harpoon, it is often difficult to know if they are referring to Paper, Harpoon Classic, or Harpoon3 because the ideas are often so intermingled and inter-related. Personally, I borrow many, many scenario ideas from HCG for H3 scenarios and, I hope, vice versa.
Also, feel free to talk about Action Stations. I didn't know that anyone else would even have a copy. I loved the complexity and detail in AS. Learned so much from that manual. :)
