This is nice. A battle that has absolutely nothing to do with a historical circumstance.
Player 1 Soviets danstudentvcc vs Player 2 Germany aec027 Meeting Engagement on a SPWAW custom map. Can't recall offhand who made it but I edited out the roads and increased the possession points for the German side flags while reducing their number. On the Soviet side I increased their number and halved their value so that the points are equivalent for both players.
Now I am a bit old school when it comes to SP so I also edited the meeting engagment starts to a short distance from the map edge for both players.
Which is even tougher than the SP starts of 20ish hexes; but afterall it is a good challenge to get into battle formation while suffering opposing fire. Delays in movement are likely in this way since terrain is always sought to prevent a heavy 88mm or Soviet 152 How/76mm ZIS fire. Both are deadly!
Lastly, we are using the best of all protocols hence there are no pre-planned arty or air attacks on the setup turns and nothing can be assigned until that first turn that produces either a flag change or an arty smoke plume or best of all - spotted units. I prefer this manner and never break it regardless of what occurs on the battlefield.
That's the setup, largely ...

Turn 0-3.
The Soviets have one plan and only one plan and that is to move from one side of the map as a horde and to arrive at the other side of the map as a remainder of that horde.
Now if we encounter any unexpected results, then no need to worry it will only be a new horde of strategic movement and off we go back into the chasm!
We need an emoticon wave in extended line formation!
The unit selections went well. The arty restrictions look ok still. However, I vastly prefer open ground since that lets me know where my opponent is.
Early on using super fast HT recon elements I landed on an out of the way flag
and ohmi gawd.. a horde of German tanks and HT's the likes of Kursk was spotted..
Aside from fainting the only thing I could do was to assign air instantly. It appears I am not up against ye standard SS he-man panzer Grenadier unit. The odd Tiger is seen but it is the werfer and flammen-werfer HT's that scare me.
I thought species 8472 was scary .. no! This is much worse.
There is a certain experience I ran into recently, it is that special sound that a flame thrower makes when it wipes out two or more tanks/apc's and riding infantry in one shot. That sound recurrs when you lose 6 - 8 vehicles the very next turn trying to attack it. No matter how much sweat is on the brow I find them impossible to destroy when one of them decides to hold their ground!!
Having seen those units all previous plans are on hold until the very forward fast moving recon units have had a chance to size them up and take them on!!!:surprise: :surprise:

Turn 04 and beyond.
The battle has begun. The hills are slowly being targetted for occupation. Already two Soviet scout cars with 50 caliber guns have attacked, traded shots with a SPW-09 and destroyed it!
However the flame tanks HT's and the Werfer HT remain out of kill range.
Over 20 shots were expended in an attempt to kill a Pz 3 Flamethrower to no avail.
I am in a bit of a quandry. My opponent has decided to take the tougher terrain route with a substantial assault force. This is unexpected and there is an abscence of arty rings and forces to oppose their approach. I will need to redirect forces to cover this unexpected line of attack.
On the bright side - for the German opposition - the Soviet pilots are not all 20/20 in vision and have begun to attack their own forces rather than face the dense German cloumns that are approaching along the more direct path free of obstructions! Lastly, I erred and did not buy heavy trucks for the heavy arty types!!! Woe is me now.
Gus
Turn 0-3
The German High Command has given me orders to move through the area and take all of the objectives while eliminating all those who oppose us.
We began to move through the mountainous, marshland hell they call "Russia". All of a sudden planes were coming in swarms. We were able to hit a few but continued to push onward and use the terrain to our advantage.
Our plan is simple. Punch a hole through their lines and march through our objectives. We expect that our superior soldiers and technology will once again prevail. We plan to burn them alive if they get in our way...
Turn 4
The German forces continued to push through towards the objectives...I hit their forward scout units and started a small push past their forward units and towards an objective located on top of a hill. My forward units were met by a barrage of heavy machinegun fire, but we were able to move troops into the area. The tank in the south that was under a hail of tank blasts finally was destroyed by the Russians. There was alot of artillery dropped on that turn and things appear to be heating up. This battle has the potential to get real ugly, real fast...
danstudentvcc
10 Feb 05, 13:08
The battle has picked up in intensity. I inflict 2 more Flammpanzer III losses on my opponent and bring the total to three. Still many remain.
Assorted light skinned Panzer are targetted and destroyed. A Spahwagon 250/9 is destroyed in close combat versus 50 caliber scout cars and the Soviet light armor kills a halftrack. This pales in comparison to the losses inflicted by the katyusha's. If I had been bolder I would have known to target the Katyushas further out and quite posibly achieved greater results.
The mass of approaching German Tigers and Elefants and Panzers is quite frightening. My conscripted troops will have to hold themselves together as this is clearly only the beginning of what promises to be a blody all-out battle.
:D
Turn 5
Our Luftwaffe and the Russian Air Force hammered the area. Our forces were hit by several hundred rockets and heavy artillery shells.
Our forces captured a victory hex and surround another. Our forces decided to go straight into the inferno and start an assault in the north. Heavy fighting ensues around the map. We are focused and determined to split the enemy forces straight down the middle!!!
danstudentvcc
12 Feb 05, 16:18
The Katyushas were quite effective. They appear to have obliterated the opponents forces. Only vehicles remain. The Soviets have managed to bag another Flame throwing Pz 3. [Relief]. It is our hope that the Tigers be unable to maitian control of a central hill summit. Already long range fire has begun to claim forces moving towards the front lines. The fighting remains heavy though ad the situation may not become settled within the next 3 turns.
danstudentvcc
Turn 6
The German Forces press the attack and heavy fighting engulfs the center and north of the map. My heavier forces are starting to join the action. We should be pressing further through the center of the Russian resistance. This battle has been costly for both sides and will continue down that path. The Russian artillery has been heavy and persistant. Through our combined air and ground might we will succeed.
danstudentvcc
14 Feb 05, 22:07
The first critical point has been reached. The Red Army draws a line in the sand and I know begin to wonder if AEF is seriously considering attacking a square formation with Tiger tanks.
I hope not.
Our first real success after tackling Pz 3 flamethrowers was a Tiger kill by anti-tank infantry at close range. The squads rallied and a trmendous hit probability over 60% was launched against a Tiger. A STG proved to be more formidable and did not succumb to an equally effective attack.
If the Katyusha can finally all get into comm we can deliver a close in assault preceded by and punctuated by HE.
The sky is falling the sky is falling scream the conscripts in Russian.
danstudentvcc
Turn 7
The fury of our forces continues to plunge through the heart of the Russians. We can feel them bending and hope soon to break their spines...We gained some ground, but were met again by several salvos of rockets. They will feel our wrath soon and submit to our forces.

Despite the gains made by the Germans. The Soviets responded by being faithful to their most sacred of duties. The duty to resist and to defend their country.
Anti-tank infantry and Guards units in multiple locations secured high percentage to hit numbers against Tigers and STG's. Despite losses one more Tiger was destroyed. Others were damaged or shot at repeatedly.
Conscript troops turned and fled during advances and many units were lost with the abscence of covering fire. More conscripts and Guard units were brought forward. Larger formations are arriving each turn to replace those units lost.
The German lines appear to be thinning and for the first time in quite awhile the Sov Katyushas were quieted. Their fire has been delayed until the spotters can once again see their target hexes.
The prescence of Guard and Anti-tank infantry should provide much needed back bone that the conscripts cannot provide. All are needed however.
Pz 3 flamethrowers were attacked by puny T-30 ack ack guns at medium gun ranges [12+ hexes]. A hit and a kill were secured. \
Lastly, the Red Air forces shot up one more werfer HT thus depriving the enemy of his devastating firepower.
danstudentvcc
Turn 8
The sight of twisted metal and the smell of death is in the air. This has turned into a meat grinder...Mass columns of Russians coming over the hills in every direction and our tanks blowing them away by the dozens, but they just keep coming and coming. They remind us of cockroaches...kill one and 100 more come out...Is there no end to this madness? We will need to increase our numbers and hit them harder to have success in the region. We will need to rain down the fire soon!!!

Those German farmers must have been breeding like wabbits.
No problem a few katyushas and we'll make wabbit stew while ducking.

Good morning Opponent
Looks like everyone has stopped to take a breath.
The battle's intensity has dropped for one turn.
danstudentvcc
Turn 9
Appears that the Soviets have thousands of infantrymen ready to die for their land...We will have to oblige them with our Will of Steel and superior technologies...The Soviets come in swarms and then send rockets flying in every direction. They are interesting to watch, but their morale will soon snap...

Well it looks like losses to the core infantry of Guards and Tedeskoshanti have caused two holes to appear in our lines.
Worse the rugged terrain is holding up reinforcing units.
The activity at close range has begun to resume its deadly and heavy intensity that has characterized much of the battles fought so far.
On the wings however tanks and reserve infantry have begun an offensive movement. One of their main targets remains just out of reach: a Ferdinand tank. Otherwise this group has begun to swell and strain against hex stacking limits on movement. Undeterred they reach out further and further while moving in open ground.
The katyusha's are hoping to put in yet another few turns of fire support.
It appears that every inch the Germans occupy results in a heavy response of fanatical Soviets rushing into close combat and across open ground.
We may have to raise a memorial for both troops after the battles end as such is the bravery being demonstrated by both sides.
:D
danstudentvcc
Turn 10
Something will break soon. The Soviet conscripts run for holes to hide in. Who sends men that are not professionals and who should not be amongst the population??? Our opponents are desperate. Our men are professional soldiers...Our forces have been slowed down, but we feel this will prove to be a speed bump in the end. Our men are determined and the enemy shows signs of breaking. Fire from the Sky shall rain down soon and put the opponent away. Our men have fought valiantly and victory shall soon be ours!!!

Well it is that time again. Alot of games in WAW/MBT are decided in the turn 4 to 12 range. Anything beyond that is either salt in the wounds/wild cheering as the victory approaches or two opponents simply clawing away at one another with nary a thought given to survive today, fight tomorrow.
It looks close to a claw game.
The final group of infantry has moved into the forward line. The two gaps where the consripts turned and fled has resolved itself into one large hole with nothing behind it but open space.
The elite Guard and other infantry has had to bully its way past cowering masses of conscripts.
And finally, not trusting fate much I have left the attacking tank supported conscript infantry in their trucks as they assault the Germans' rear hills, since at least I know the truckers will continue to move in the right direction. [not run away].
It remains a close battle.
Gus
Turn 11
Our forces still manage to press onward even with Soviet Air harassment and rocket barrages. We managed to hit some infantry units with rockets this turn and cause some casualties of our own. There is still alot of close combat and our tanks continue to runover conscripts that are hiding in their holes crying for their mothers...This battle has taken a large toll of both sides and both sides continue to try to land the final KO punch!!!

One turn later. Oh boy has the smoke cleared.
AEF027 is right seems we will both fight until there is no one left. or till whoever was last left alive holding a flag.
This turn the Soviets rallied. Despite a brutal pounding from a flamethrowing Pz 3 even the conscripts came forward to attack.
On the left flank the Soviets have pushed past the resistance and the German HQ was encountered deep inside German lines along the back row of hills. An HT was lost the moment contact was made. More HT's rushed forward to avenge their comrade.
In the center the Soviets are threatening to overun resistance headlong; are slowly encircling the German Panzers on the central hills with a left side movement.
However the Germans have Tigers and Pz 3 Flamers to consume the Soviet advance with.
It appears that despite their inability to put up a good fight the Soviet Conscripts do seem to tie up alot of German firepower. This allows the elite infantry to sneak up despite horrible losses thus gaining close assaults on super powerful tank types like the Elephant.
danstudentvcc
Turn 12
Soviet Air and Rocket attacks remain intense. We actually damaged one of the planes. Our forces continue to roll over top and burn all Soviet Conscripts in our way as we continue to advance. The center of the map is littered by destroyed vehicles, smoke, and fire. It smells like twisted steel and burnt flesh out there. There are some Soviet units harassing our A0 HQ unit. We will need to send some assistance. This battle can still go either way, but I have confidence in our men!!!

Turn 12
Soviet ... out there. There are some Soviet units harassing our A0 HQ unit. We will need to send some assistance. This battle can still go either way, but I have confidence in our men!!!
Good morning.
First the good news. The Soviets are low on tanks and elite infantry.
Now the bad news:
The Soviets hunted around for the German HQ unit. Despite some losses it was found and attacked. At first things went well and they became suppressed. Then it got tough as 6 units had to combine fire just to subdue the unit.
It refused to disperse.
It refused to surrender.
It even went down to the last man taking gunfire shots after shots. As if this wasn't enough the Soviets then ran out of units to bring into the fray. So a crew dismounted and kept up the shooting. Finally it was over! The last man died.
See attached pics.
The Soviets then resumed their advance now that the left wing was secure. Over 1 1/2 companies of fresh Conscripts are motoring their way to German lines. Tanks are continuing the left hook to encircle remaining Tiger Stug and Pz 3Flamers. Their infantry are already succumbing to retreat fire [I am positioned in the path of their route to the German retreat flag.] and swarming into my hexes with in their haste to escape the pocket. The slower Soviet tanks that cannot make the left hook have setup on the hills and begun to shoot at the exposed HT Werfers.
Yet the Germans will not give up; they will not surrender. More atrocities will occur at close combat ranges as quarter is neither given nor sought!
We must both be  nuts .. nah, its just another game of Steel Panthers!!
AEF027 is the kind of opponent you just simply  even while he is roasting your tank fleet and leaving you with Consripts to fill the woods with [assuming they don't run away he keeps his force dangerously placed and no comfort is thus derived.
danstudentvcc
Turn 13
With our HQ unit destroyed we press on the attack. There are reports that our mighty warriors have overtaken some enemy combatants in hand to hand combat. Things are starting to look desolute out there and there probably is no chance for anyone to win, so we are all fighting for national pride. These mountains are burning and men are dead everywhere. We will bomb those rats from their holes...

Hello.
The Soviets are embroiled in close combat. Nearly every German tank is surrounded by a sea of brown. See the attached images.
This type of fighting is characterised by close-in anti-tank fighting; losses from accompanying infantry fire meant to protect their German tanks; lossess from friendly fire attacking the tanks; close quarter infantry assaults as units rout into one another. Being in the path of AEF027's retreat flag also means that he is in mine as well.
The reinforcements meant to aid the German HQ have been spotted. More Pz 3 flamers.
This is not going to be a pretty fight. I amy have to keep the conscripts sitting in the trucks until they are needed since their morale is lower than the truck crews! See attached image.
danstudentvcc
Turn 14
The battle rages on and units are bogged down and on top of one another. Bullets, screams, and tanks are all meshed together and the fighting is intense. Our support is on its way. Things should get real interesting soon. The men are exhausted on both sides and someone will land a KO punch soon.

Hello fight fans...I know there are alot of boos boos!
Just the same! The Soviets resume an intense and aggressive posture.
The 1&1/2 CO's of fresh unused Conscript infantry has nearly arrived on the Germans end of the map's hills. It will be a very short sprint for the Comrades to engage the opposing platoon of Flamethrowing Pz 3's.
Easy on the cheering! I have faced the Soviets myself and understand that their sheer size usually means that in SP they are the favourite: hence the losing opponents get the biggest cheers.
However, the comrades have already launced a pre-emptive strike with Ack Ack trucks and HT's to confuse the much feared tank type crewmen. As well our noble Katyusha's have returned in strength.
To a cacauphony of comrade cheering. To boot, the smaller Katyusha's have taken to direct firing on German STG's after multiple turns of roaming about in confusion and while being unable to gain any radio comm with FOO even while standing still. I suppose this means that they are usually direct firing?! hehehhehheheheheh.
Lastly, just in case the Conscripts cannot complete the job after taking a stab at fighting flamethrowing tanks ... a couple of platoons of Soviet tanks with successful anti-tank infantry are loaded and already crossing open ground to aid in the effort.
On the off-chance that both fail in their duty. We have some AT-Guns lying in wait in the open ground waiting for good kill opp's with motorized carriers in support.
The battle is not yet over.
Gus
The Soviets come in waves and their infantry columns are burnt in place or gunned down by machinegun fire, but they still come back for more...They are savages...We will burn every last one of them...We see they have vehicles coming across the valley and into the hills...This battle will only get more intense...We have a surprise for them which is coming soon ;)
Both sides exchanged salvos of rocket artillery. The casualties are steep and the Russians keep sending troops over the hills. We aren't sure how much longer either side can hold onto this fight. This was one of the nastiest fights. There are bodies and burnt steel all over the map.
Rockets continue to pound the earth. We charged the Conscripts in the west and burnt them with our flame tanks...We also forced some units in the central hills to disperse. We will continue to burn them out from their hiding spots ;)

Well it appears that the Soviets have cleared the middle hill flags of enemy troops.
With the remaining turns we hope to succeed vs the remaining Pz 3 flamers defending the German positions and flags.

Hello. Sorry for the delay I was a little bit under the weather. I have just picked up the turn and will report back on the status of the Soviet attack. About the Ge surprise-I haven't noticed anything unusual just yet. Perhaps it will occur this turn, maybe the Pz3 Flamers received some additional support.
This has been a cool match I must agree. It has been offense offense offense nearly every turn. As well I had no idea how potent the Katyushas could be. I suspected they were a handful but they really dampen everyone-friendly or not-within its dropzone!!

Hold the pressess. Hold the pressess. HHHHHoolllllllddddd the prresesesessssssssssse .. phew! Glad I caught up to you AEF. Say if you can spare a minute from you several hundred German death cards: We found some more infantry in perfectly good shape back on the hills. There's plenty of time to bring them forward. Perhaps the Pz Flamers will run out of Napthalene soon.
Funny thing though is that they are next of kin of some poe folks in the Caucausus. Not a one of them with party affiliations. Seems somehow or other they expect to see their other family members and village people who also served in a bbq'd unit! :OHNO:
You think theyse related somehow? Anyway, so if you line up your Pz 3's into two neat little rows over there in front of the ATG's we can get a good ending going ...
