I am thinking about buying Steel Panthers directly from matrix games. Is it worth 80 bucks?
here is what I want in this game, so all you veterans of this game please help me.
I love the old Close Combat games and cannot stop playing Combat Mission BTB and Afrika Corps, those game are the best.
I understand this game is turn based, hex design.
1) Does it have many different units IE. for Germany can you make Panzer III,Elephants, Sturmtigers, Panzer IV, Tigers etc. Or do you only get three tanks. The reason I love Combat Mission is because they include so many units its awesome.
2) Can you create your own battles and create units? Or are you stuck with 5 scenarios and the units you started with.

I have many more questions but this is a good start.

Thanks Fellas!!!

The game is free. You can dload it by referencing the www.MatrixGames.com (http://www.MatrixGames.com) website.
This game is regularly updated [again for free]; hence the version numbers.

The SP-game that costs money is a Campaign included version of the free dload.

That means that you are getting a campaign for solitaire play and some new icons etc ... that add to the flavour of the game.

Whether you buy the Campaign SP game or dload the free game you can count on a big Yes! for each of your questions.

I'll focus on the free game that occupies over 470 megs of compressed unopened file space [over a gig fully loaded]

*thousands of vehicle types and infantry -- from tanks to recon vehicles -- from elite forces to rebels/partisans ... tank busters to tranpsort aircraft ..

*you can edit formations by country or for a specific battle
leadership ratings; movement rates; ammo types [APCR vs HE]; hundreds of fields of editable info ...

*you can link battles to form a custom campaign that includes what ifs or paths dependent on your battle results etc ..

*you can customize maps or use bmp images to setup large maps quickly ///

However fuel/supply/diplomacy/medicine/civilians/naval battles etc are not included in the game so these cannot be used to influence battles much ..

What I recommend is, download the Game (especially if you have a DSL/Cable connection) and try it out. If you find it's your cup of tea, then consider going the extra mile for the full General's Edition which includes the Mega Campaigns.

I am thinking about buying Steel Panthers directly from matrix games. Is it worth 80 bucks? Not sure if you have them or not BUT get a copy of SPWW@ and SPMBT from Camo Group as well. They are also free and alot smaller downloads but I can't remeber exact size (40-60 MB each maybe).

I second that They are certainly worth the download as well. Especially SPMBT if you want something modern.
