Play the first game from either side, save the game when you have either won or when the Scenario Duration has expired, and then send me a saved game! I will look at the result of your game and Modify the next scenario in the battleset to reflect units that you destroyed or lost, ordnance expended, as well as ensure that the Victory Conditions of the next game are adjusted so that they are challenging and achievable. I might even have to adjust the storyline based on your results!

COLDNO1 - EC2003 NACV Cold North

The Russian military has been experiencing a loss of discipline and an increase in the number of desertions and mutinies among its ranks brought on by little or no pay and loss of morale. Of late, several older ex-Soviet warships that were laid up prior to de-commissioning have turned up missing. More disturbing is the fact that the ammunition for these warships stored in a nearby warehouse, prior to their destruction, has also turned up missing.

In another development, Oil has been discovered in and around the coast of northern Greenland and several oil rigs and a base camp have been set up. Contact has been lost with the whole operation. It is feared that an unknown force has seized the facilities. NATO has been tasked to investigate

The Netherlands has lost a (surprising) number of F16s against France, but most pilots have bailed out over friendly territory and are fit to fly. Belgium F16s captured intact are being readied for operations.

Denmark also flies 62 F16-MLUs, based on two bases in Skrydstrup and Aalborg. A daring plan has been developed to raid the Danish airbase of Skrydstrup, neutralise the defences, bring in pilots and maintenance crews by plane, and fly the aircraft to the Netherlands.

MCMForceNorth – EC2003 GIUK

In the Baltic, especally in the northeast and east, there are many mines and torpedos laid or fired in WWII which have not yet been cleared. After the cold war, a multi-national Force has been sent. MCMForceNorth is one of the NATO standing naval forces.

You must clear 5 mines at a minimum and 10 for total victory. Do not forget that we are in peacetime so do not shoot down a red plane or ship! Also neutral forces should not be involved in MCM action. Perhaps there is still another small bad surprise!

SubHunt EC2003 GIUK

The Baltic Sea has long been a highly disputed area. With Soviet claims for access to the Atlantic independent of the ice region, this is unlikely to change in the future. Unfortunately, the Baltic is also a strategic waterway; providing a key maritime link between Russian oil fields, coal mines, and their foreign customers.

It has many choke points such as the Cadet channel, Copenhagen / the belt, and sound areas, for example. The former Soviet Baltic Fleet was caught in a big Mousetrap. Only their submarines could some times try to escape through the only deep waterway. Therefore, it was one of the most important tasks for the German and Danish Navies to keep the Warsaw Pact Navies within this trap.

Here, in this scenario, some red diesel subs try to make it through the belt waters out to the Kattegat. NATO is going to stop them. The time of this scenario is somewhere in 1970-1980; so no modern ASW-weapons are available.

Last Tango in Portsmouth EC2003 GIUK

It is 1990 and the world is at war. England is in jeopardy. As in the last two World Wars, the enemy is attempting to bring England to its knees by denying it access to the sea lanes and to the food and oil that an island nation of seventy million people must have to avoid starvation and industrial collapse.

As part of the war effort, convoys carrying food, oil, and goods are in transit from the United States to England. And, as one might expect, the Soviet Union is very interested in making sure these ships never reach the British Isles.

Continental Connection - BAT10B11 - EC2003 GIUK
A few years in the future... French intelligence operatives have learned that Russia plans to sell a number of older tactical nuclear weapons to their allies in the Third World. The European Union has demanded that Russia abandon the plan. Russia has responded by insisting that the French have been misled by unreliable sources. However, satellite photographs reveal that a convoy consisting of Russian warships and merchants has just entered the Norwegian Sea.

All available E.U. forces (including Danish aircraft that have been scrambled to Vagar) are directed to patrol the Norwegian Sea and intercept a Russian convoy believed to be escorting a merchant vessel carrying nuclear weapons for sale in the Third World. 25th Scenario Posted this Year!

The next installment of the Cyprus Affair Battleset has now been released.

NWCM3 - Carving Turkey

When the NSC made good on its promise to deliver SA-10 Grumble SAM systems to the Greek Cypriots in the spring of 1995 despite Turkish protests, the stage was set for another conflict in Cyprus. The presence of the advanced weapons shifted the delicate balance of power as it put nearly all aircraft operating from the Turkish side of the island at risk.

NATO was embarrassed when regular Turkish forces stormed the island a few months later. It had not been aware of Turkey's intent to reclaim Cyprus once and for all. Hand-in-hand with the economic boom in the NSC came military modernization and revitalization; funding for which was fueled at least partly by an unprecedented level of arms exports. The NSC would no longer sit idly by while its national interests were decided by others. It launched a major attack against Turkey on June 3, 1995.

The NSC did not believe that NATO would intervene in the Cypriot affair after having been snubbed by its Turkish partner and after the beating it had received in the Baltic conflict a year earlier.

Background:

Pleased that NATO has thus far remained only a verbal combatant in this war, the Kremlin became blind to the original objective - the liberation of Greek Cyprus. They suddenly realized that here was a golden opportunity to finally rid themselves of the age-old Bosporous-Dardenelles chokepoint. To do so, it would be necessary to invade and claim at least a portion of Turkish territory. An amphibious assault has been launched to carry out the mission.

Subj: Alert - Impending NSC Amphibious Assault

1. SitRep

Intelligence reports indicate that an NSC amphibious group has been assembled and is underway. It is heading south. The best estimate of enemy intentions is that they are planning to launch an amphibious assault against Turkish territory.

Also, it is possible that an NSC Surface Action Group is heading towards Cyprus.

2. ORDERS

Interdict, engage, and destroy the NSC amphibious group as soon as possible. Command is aware that only limited assets are available for this ASuW mission. You must make do with what you have. NATO continues to refuse reinforcements.

Your orders are clear. Stop the amphibious invasion now assembling in the Black Sea. It will be much more difficult to stop the Soviets if they make it to the beach.

Mark Gellis has posted the 26th scenario of the year!

The plot for this one sounds as though it was ripped from the latest newspaper headlines. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Kilo Krush – BAT10D1 - EC2003 MEDC
A few years in the future... Libya has purchased two Kilo-class submarines from Russia. The European Union does not wish the transfer to take place. There is serious concern in the E.U. that the new government of Libya is too hostile to the West and that these submarines represent a potential threat the European merchant fleets and military forces.

Libya refuses to reconsider the deal, claiming that since it has abandoned its WMD programs, it has every right to expand its conventional forces. (In fact, there are persistent indications that Libya is again involved in terrorism and the development of chemical and even nuclear weapons.)

Russia has declared that the E.U. has no right to interfere with its arms deals. It has also issued a stern warning that, since Russian crews are currently on board the Kilos, any attack against these submarines will be seen as an attack on Russia. The United States is remaining neutral on this issue. Get it in the SZO File Archives (http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=35

Dave Steinmeyer has released his first Harpoon 3 scenario. He is the 9th author to post a scenario. Congratulations, Dave, and thanks for sharing your work with the community.

Lone Wolf
Three NATO diesel submarines travelled north together, guarding each other during snorkel periods. They had intended to conduct wolf-pack operations near the Soviet sub base at Polyarnyy. They have been plagued by bad luck, however. First, one unit was sunk by a Tango-class SS before the other two could sink it. Then as they approached their objective, one of the remaining two boats hit a mine and was lost. The remaining ship, a Dutch Walrus-class, continued north and has run afoul of a coastal ASW group.

Operation Spanish Fury - BAT10D2 - EC2003 MEDC
A few years in the future... Revolutions in Algeria, Libya, and Egypt have left these countries in the grip of radical Islamic governments that are hostile to the United States and the European Union.

In recent months, there have been a number of terrorist attacks in Spain. While the Algerian government is not directly responsible for these attacks, they have fostered an atmosphere of hatred against the E.U. and they have done nothing to prevent terrorists from organizing and training in their country. Spain has decided to destroy three command bunkers in Algeria in retaliation for the recent terrorist attacks. The purpose of this attack is not only to reduce the effectiveness of the Algerian military but also to send their government a message.

30th Scenario posted this year!
Freek Schepers has posted his latest scenario. This is his first scenario to use the Colonial Wars database by Paul Bridge. We sincerely hope that it is not his last for this database. :)

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
In this scenario the forces are arranged as they were in the Caribbean on October 22nd 1962; the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

http://img188.echo.cx/img188/4059/cubamap6pe.th.gif (http://img188.echo.cx/my.php?image=cubamap6pe.gif)

After the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, Cuba started re-arming with the most modern Soviet weapon systems. MiG-19 and -21 fighters armed with Atoll-AAM, SSM-armed missile boats, and SA-2 SAMs have been supplied to Cuba in early 1962. Training has been provided in the USSR and Soviet advisors and training units were moved to Cuba.

Early 1962: US recon planes spotted construction activity of what were evaluated to be missile launch pads and fleet harbours suitable for nuclear submarines.

Early October: Soviet merchant ships with covered tube-like deck cargo were spotted in the Dardanelles and in the G-I-UK gap heading southwestwardly. Submarines were also detected moving into the Atlantic by the brand-new but imperfect SOSUS sensors.

At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, these ships are approaching Cuba, where Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles are thought to be near operational status...

31st Scenario posted this year!
Freek Schepers has released his latest creation. This is scenario also uses the Colonial Wars database edited by Paul Bridge. Some players might actually still be able to remember the Indonesian crisis as the world held its breath.

OPERATION JAYA WIJAYA
http://img174.echo.cx/img174/1839/guinea6cj.th.gif (http://img174.echo.cx/my.php?image=guinea6cj.gif)

When Indonesia became independent in 1949, The Netherlands held onto New Guinea, a vast island group in the east of the archipelago. The Netherlands maintained permanent army (KNIL), navy, and air force units on the islands. In the early 1960s, President Soekarno started guerrilla operations against the British in Malaysia and against the Dutch in New Guinea to force them to relinquish their colonies. Indonesia built up its military with modern Russian weapons and, in 1961, Indonesia had the strongest air force in the Southern Hemisphere while The Netherlands post-war economic position had allowed it only limited military investments.

A visit of the Dutch aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman" to the region in 1961 inflamed the situation and serious incidents started the next year. In March of 1962, Dutch patrol planes sank an Indonesian Schooner and, in July, Dutch destroyers sank the Indonesian torpedo-boat Matjan Tutul carrying soldiers to New Guinea. Dutch Neptunes intercepted and shot down some of the Mitchell bombers and Dakotas dropping paras in company strength in the jungle. During the summer, a bloody guerrilla war started between these para's and Dutch Marines in the jungle of New Guinea.

Politically, the Soviet Union was rattling its sabre in Cuba, Vietnam, and gave overt support to Indonesia (including supplying crews to Indonesia's newly built submarines). President Kennedy was very worried about the threat of Soviet influence in Indonesia with its strategic sea lanes. The Dutch Prime minister de Quai and his foreign minister Luns refused to negotiate with Soekarno and tried to make New Guinea a UN-protectorate only to face a Russian veto.

Finally, in August of 1962, Soekarno gave orders for the liberation of New Guinea by force through operation Jaya Wijaya. Merchant ships and the Indonesian navy formed up east of the Celebes and the Indonesian Air Force was deployed to forward bases. Still, the newly formed Indonesian navy faced a small, though battle-hardened Dutch navy. The operation was by no means a sure thing. This changed when Russia deployed Badger bombers and long-range submarines and dressed up their crews as Indonesian 'volunteers'. The Netherlands had good intelligence, Dutch submarines had crossed the Pacific, and, for the first time in decades, the Netherlands sent conscript troops to defend the colonies.

On August 18th, Prime Minister de Quai gave in under severe pressure from President Kennedy and agreed to hand over New Guinea to Indonesia later that year. This scenario investigates what would have happened if the Netherlands would have let the conflict erupt. Soekarno had already ordered his invasion fleet to sail from the Celebes and, although some sources maintain Soekarno had not yet achieved the 3:1 superiority in forces required, the Russian forces would have played a decisive role in the battle.

Emerald Action – BAT10C3 - EC2003 GIUK

http://img346.echo.cx/img346/9897/emeraldaction3ce.th.gif (http://img346.echo.cx/my.php?image=emeraldaction3ce.gif)

From Cold War to Cod War...

Recent ecological factors have led to the collapse of fish populations around the world. The European Union has decided to treat certain regions of the Atlantic Ocean as "fallow zones" in the hopes that fish populations will recover and a worldwide food crisis will be avoided. Not all nations recognize these Fallow Zones, though...

Norwegian fishing boats have once again entered Fallow Zones to the west of Ireland. Irish forces are directed to locate these fishing boats and seize them; if they attempt to flee, sink them. These boats must not be allowed to return to Norway. Norway is aware that the E.U. is ready to use force against its fishing boats. A Norwegian frigate may be on patrol in these waters. Avoid this warship. She carries anti-surface missiles and your vessels are unlikely to survive an encounter with her.

This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b7 or later and also the HCDB_050510 or later in order to function properly.

34th Scenario posted this year!

See for yourself if history could have played out differently at the Bay of Pigs. This scenario uses the Colonial Wars database edited by Paul Bridge.

Bay of Pigs

http://img335.imageshack.us/img335/8309/bayofpigsaegis5az.th.gif (http://img335.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bayofpigsaegis5az.gif)

On April 14th, 1961, six ships departed a Nicaraguan training camp where they had spent months training with CIA instructors. Brigade 2506 was to land at the Bay of Pigs in southern Cuba to overthrow Castro's regime. Sixteen B-26C Invader medium-range bombers were ready in Central America to support their invasion.

Cuba's army and militia, while numerically strong, were thought to be poorly motivated and likely to switch sides when the invasion took place. Cuba's air force was poorly equipped, had low servicability, and would be destroyed on the ground by the rebel B-26s and by US strikes on the main airbases. After all, it was the CIA who had organised the invasion.

In reality, President Kennedy had inherited the operation from his predecessors and, while unwilling to pull the plug, he severely limited the support that could be given and personally ordered a veto against air strikes on Cuban airbases.

This scenario starts on April 15th 1961 and lasts 24 hours. It uses Paul Bridge's Colonial Database (v1.5 July 6th, 2005). Thanks to Paul for many database updates.

ORDERS FOR CUBA

SITUATION

CIA remains committed to the removal of the Communist government of Cuba by any means possible. President Kennedy appears to be no different from his predecessors in advocating invasion and assassination plots against our country.

The Soviet Union has reacted enthusiastically to our requests for arms and, so far, 4 MiG-15s and some shipments of Czech submachine guns have been received. Most of our air force personnel are training on MiG-15, MiG-19 fighters, and the new SA-2 SAM rockets in Russia and Czechoslovakia. Only some trainee fighter pilots and the 4 captains piloting the Migs are available to support our B26 bombers in defending Cuba.

ORDERS

Your orders are to defend Cuba against potential aggression. The timing of such aggression is expected within the next day, but be wary of attempts to draw out our forces to reduce their effectiveness.

Intel reports that the CIA has used training camps in Florida, Nicaragua and Guatemala to train a unit known as Brigade 2506. They appear to have access to military aircraft and are thought to be planning a parachute or ship insertion somewhere in Cuba.

ORDERS FOR REBELS

"Men of Brigade 2506; the liberation of our country has begun!

We will invade Cuba! Our training has honed our small arms skills, taught us how to cooperate with our air power, and made us familiar with the Landing Ships from which we will unload our tanks, our infantry companies, and our supplies. Good Luck"

<<Eyes Only Commander Brigade 2506>>

President Kennedy has personally approved the operation. U-2 reconnaissance missions have been planned. The Amphibious Landing Ship USS San Marco with two escorting destroyers will support our invasion and escort us in.

The Essex Carrier group will be flying cover missions over the beachheads enabling our unescorted B-26C bombers to level the enemy.

35th Scenario this year!

Dave Steinmeyer has posted his second scenario, BALTIC TIDE. Thanks for sharing it with us.

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3053/natostart5xa.th.gif (http://img233.imageshack.us/my.php?image=natostart5xa.gif)

World War III has been raging across the globe for three days already. Casualties have been high on both sides. Where the Soviets expected to make rapid gains on land, they have not. And where NATO expected to quickly gain control of the skies above Europe, the Pact has made more than a fight of it.

At sea, there are only the quick and the dead. What were supposed to be set piece battles turned into bloodbaths with the winner being whoever fired first. While no American carriers have been sunk, yet, three have been heavily damaged in the GIUK Gap alone. One of the few things going as planned is NATO's campaign against Soviet subs in the Atlantic and North Sea. With the combination of first-class sonar, excellent signals processing, and land and ship based aircraft, NATO has been able to smother almost any sub contact they run across.

Reinforcements are being rushed into the meat grinder that is the North Atlantic. Here, at least, NATO has the advantage of unrestricted access to the sea. Any Pact units in transit to the Atlantic must pass through restricted (and often NATO-controlled) seaways.

NATO Orders: The Soviets have already sustained very heavy losses to the naval forces they had pre-positioned in the North Sea and Atlantic prior to the outbreak of hostilities. Satellite reconnaissance indicates that a major Surface Action Group will attempt to surge through the Danish Straits. In order to support this breakout, East German airborne units and Polish Marines have landed on several Danish islands. And, while Pact losses in these landing have been high, they are still stubbornly holding their positions. We also have indications of a large number of Soviet cargo aircraft marshaling at Russian airfields as well as cargo ships leaving the port of Leningrad. We believe they are trying to push supplies and equipment forward to support their efforts on the central front.

Close the Danish Straits. Do not allow the SAG to complete its transit to the North Sea.

Soviet orders: NATO surface fleets in the North Sea and around Denmark have suffered great attrition from our naval air forces. Expect only light forces to oppose your transit. The threat of NATO subs is high, however. NATO air forces and ASW units pose the greatest danger to your mission.

Get the SAG through the Danish straits and into the North Sea for follow-on commerce raider operations against the UK and the French coast.

Roman Thunder – ALBAT10A - EC2003 MEDC

A few years in the future... Tensions between Algeria and the E.U. have increased. Algeria is now controlled by a religious dictatorship that is hostile to the West. The E.U. believes Algeria is responsible for several recent terrorist attacks in Europe. Current thinking in Europe is that the most likely solution to the problem is regime change.

Intelligence officers have been in communication with a coalition of rebel groups in Algeria--it would probably be too much to call them pro-Western, but they would certainly be an improvement over the current lot. They will view an E.U. attack as a signal to initiate their own attacks against the Algerian government. If the rebels can overthrow the current regime, it may mark the start of a period of improved relations with Algeria.

This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b7 or later and also the HCDB_050812 or later in order to function properly.

Friction has been growing between Indonesia and its neighbors. Among other issues, Indonesia claims that other nations have been illegally fishing in its waters while other nations accuse Indonesia of not doing enough to reduce piracy.

Four days ago, an Indonesian submarine in the waters between the Nicobar islands and Sumatra sunk an Indian merchant that it mistook for a commercial fishing boat. Sixteen Indian sailors were killed in the incident.

FROM: COMMANDER WESTERN APPROACHES
TO: COMMANDER 111TFW, LAKENHEATH AFB
SUBJECT: STRIKE ORDERS

SITREP: The strike two days ago by NATO submarines against Soviet naval bomber bases and Soviet AF bomber bases on the Kola Peninsula was not as successful as SacLant had hoped. However, we are presented with a golden opportunity to hit them again since heavy weather has closed their bases. With Strike Fleet currently tied down just south of the Narvik line while trying to re-arm and filter Pact sub forces, our only chance is to strike them hard with USAF tactical fighter bombers.

ORDERS: Using 60 bombers from your wing, fly with tanker support as far north as Tromso. Land there and re-fuel. We have a 36 hour window to strike them before the weather clears up. We will understand and expect heavy losses. Try to limit them to the best of your planning. You are also being provided with a squadron of F-15Cs from the 48TH TFW to provide limited tactical escort.

SITREP: PACT Forces have crossed the intra-German border and attack US forces worldwide. Currently, there is fighting in Europe, the Red Sea, South China Seas, and in and around Japan. You are hereby assigned to assume command of task force 60 and secure your forces in their areas. Currently, Soviet forces are in full move across the theatre as assumed by NATO OP Plan 99-04. As of yet, there has been no use of NBC weapons in this theatre or any other where US/NATO forces are currently engaging Soviet/PACT forces. Due to attacks against French shipping in the Kiel Canal and against French harbors, France is honoring her Atlantic Alliance agreements and has turned over some of her forces to your local command. Libyan forces are currently stepping up mobilization. Syrian forces and Islamic terrorists have begun massive mobilization in Lebanaon and along the Golan Heights. CIA and DIA analysis believe that the Syrians and Islamic groups may attack Israel to keep her busy during this confilct and limit her ability to help us. Soviet, Bulgarian, Romanina forces have landed or crossed the borders of both Greece and Turkey. It is believed that they are trying to secure free access of the straits in and out of the Black Sea. At this time, Yugoslavia and Austria have both declared their neutrality in this conflict. Do Not Attack or violate their neutrality.

Power Sweep
Dave Steinmeyer has posted his third scenario, Power Sweep. For a guy who just started designing this year, this promises to be yet another classic. Only a handful of units, but this scenario should by no means be considered easy. Take that attitude and you'll soon find yourself on the wrong end of a 533mm torpedo!

The war has not been kind to the Soviet navy; especially their submarine forces. In order to protect their remaining submarine units, the Soviets have been forced to begin escorting their less capable boats with first-line SSNs.

In this engagement, a Soviet SSN is guarding two other units as they proceed south through the Norwegian Sea. Once the group has reached the Atlantic, the SSN will perform its own mission while the SS and SSGN attack surface shipping.

First, though, NATO will try to stop them.

Following independence from France in 1956, President Habib Bourguiba established a strict one-party state. He dominated the country for 31 years, repressing Islamic fundamentalism and establishing rights for women unmatched by any other Arab nation.Tunisia has a diverse economy, with important agricultural, mining, energy, tourism, and manufacturing sectors. Located in a strategic location in central Mediterranean; Malta and Tunisia are discussing the commercial exploitation of the continental shelf between their countries, particularly for oil exploration.

A Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake has hit the Kairouan region in central Tunisia. In an emergency session of the UN, the Tunis Government has requested international aid of food, water and civil and structural engineers. The Tunisian Army is stretched to the limit at this time trying to re-establish order.

In an astounding announcement at the UN table, it seems that Libya is making threatening overtones to block all aid underway to Tunisia. Following France's reluctance to put it's navy in harm's way to aid an ungrateful colony, the United Kingdom has agreed to provide an escort for the humanitarian ships now assembling at Portsmouth.

The NATO-Russian war is 4 weeks old. Russia's naval aviation forces and US Carriers have fought several bloody battles around Japan. Japan has defended its islands well, but is now very vulnerable to the closure of its SLOC's. The Chinese navy has left port but has stayed out of the battle. The US losses in the Pacific and Atlantic theatres have forced it to withdraw the Seventh Fleet from the IO. Only Diego Garcia remains as a stronghold there. The task of providing security for the Malakka Strait has been handed over to India, Thailand, and Singapore. India and Thailand will use their baby-carriers to escort tankers through the IO. The War in the Pacific has interrupted oil shipments to Japan and China for several weeks now and resumption of the oil trade has now become a strategic imperative.

Continuing on in his "Battle Ocean 90" series, Mark Gellis has posted his Hungry Lion [EC2003 NACV] scenario.
Freek Schepers has released, Indian, the 8th scenario in his "21st Century Ocean Wars" battleset.
Herman Hum has posted the fourth installment in the "New World Order - Cyprus Affair" battleset, Chastiser.
HUNGRY LION – EC2003 NACV – CON90A1

http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/3154/lionstart4pq.th.gif (http://img382.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lionstart4pq.gif)

It is 1990 and the world is at war. The Soviet Union has invaded and occupied Iran. The United States and its allies demanded that the Soviet Union remove its forces from Iran immediately and threatened to use force if necessary.

The Soviet Union responded with a series of lightning strikes that destroyed a large number of military bases in Europe. The Soviets then initiated a massive campaign of submarine warfare designed to cripple the West. Their goal does not appear to be to invade Europe but to leave the West so weak that it will be unable to force them out of Iran until their control of that country effectively becomes the status quo.

Blue Orders:
Convoy AHS (Flag Bradley), Convoy AIS (Flag Scott), and Convoy ALS (Flag Wainwright) should proceed to Portsmouth. Avoid contact with enemy forces if possible, but you are cleared to defend yourselves against any threats.
All other available surface and submarine units should patrol the sea lanes between the United States and the United Kingdom. Engage and destroy any enemy vessels or submarines you encounter.
Air assets should provide support to the convoys and the surface action groups. Intelligence reports that the Soviets may attempt to attack British and French bases with long-range bombers. Be prepared to defend these bases.

INDIAN OCEAN - Scenario #8 - 21st Century Ocean Wars battleset

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/8691/indianstart20zz.th.gif (http://img397.imageshack.us/my.php?image=indianstart20zz.gif)

The NATO-Russian war is 4 weeks old. Russia has suffered crippling losses to its long-range Naval aviation forces and to its submarines in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. The US strategy of leaving the defence of the SLOCs in the IO to India, Thailand, and Singapore has failed when China, worried about its oil supply, claimed control over the Malakka Strait. The ensuing fight sank numerous oil tankers and crippled the Allied Navies in southeast Asia.

The White House and State Department are at odds whether the Chinese intervention signals an alliance between China, Russia, and several SE-Asia nations. The US Navy is rushing reserve forces into the IO to defend the critical approaches to the Persian Gulf oil fields. Reserve troop flown to SE-Asia and the Persian Gulf Region must be matched up with their pre-positioned equipment on Diego Garcia to stabilise the region.

The IO is in turmoil. Chinese naval forces have pushed through the Malakka Strait and destroyed the airbases and navy of Singapore. In a running fight, two of the escorting frigates of the Thai carrier Chakkri Nareubet have been sunk, but the carrier is still afloat and is heading for the IO. Chinese ships then entered harbour in Myanmar. India has withdrawn its forces from Port Blair after the sinking of the Viraat in the ten-degree channel by a torpedo.

Oil tanker traffic is in turmoil with many tanker destinations being changed due to the war. About 20 have been boarded by Chinese prize crews.

MISSION

Primary mission is to destroy any enemy units inside the IO. The secondary mission is to escort the AK and AKR Maritime Pre-positioned ships from Diego Garcia towards the Malakka Strait (3 ships), Persian Gulf (5 ships), and Suez Canal (4 ships).

CHASTISER - Scenario #4 - New World Order Campaign #2 [The Cyprus Affair]

http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/5376/nwcm44ko.th.gif (http://img381.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nwcm44ko.gif)

The NSC was about to be proven wrong.

1. SitRep
The move to seize the Bosporous & Dardanelles was a mistake. The prospect of a modernized and ambitious New Soviet navy with a front yard on the eastern Mediterannean was too much for NATO to bear. The U.S. Sixth Fleet, standing off Italy and observing the conflict in Turkey from afar, has now been called into action. The task force will be entering an extremely hostile zone.

Yesterday, the NSC launched a major airborne assault upon the Turkish contingent in Cyprus and all indications are that the island will be firmly under NSC control by tomorrow.NSC amphibious forces have seized Turkish territory around the Bosporous & the Dardanelles. Istanbul is under siege. NSC airborne assault against Cyprus is underway and will likely be successful by tomorrow. The prospect of NSC control of these areas is unacceptable to NATO security concerns.

2. ORDERS
CVBG 5.5 - Flag Eisenhower - Proceed at best speed to Cypriot zone. Stand by for further operational orders upon arrival. A diplomatic solution is still possible but unlikely.

Blast from the Past
Ever wonder how difficult it might be to have a submarine creep up onto the beach for reconnaissance? Well, here's your chance to find out. This is the first Harpoon 3 scenario that I ever wrote. It's been damaged and unavailable for most of the year, but we've finally been able to repair it and now present it to you on StrategyZoneOnline for use with the PlayersDB.

Beach Reconnaissance

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9945/brecon8jp.th.gif (http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=brecon8jp.gif)

Soviet submarines have scored many successes in the Atlantic convoy lanes through the profligate expenditure of torpedoes and missiles. By the third week of the war, many submarines are suspected to be low on fuel and munitions. However, the number of submarines returning to ports in the Kola Peninsula is far lower than expected.

The level of subsurface activity in the Spitzbergen area is higher than expected. Investigate and see if these anomalies are coincidental or correlated. If the Soviets can replenish away from the Kola Peninsula, this would be a significant and strategic force multiplier.

Convoy Raider

Try out this scenario and reprise the role of Captain Langsdorff (or at least the Russian version of him) and become the terror of all commercial vessels in the Indian Ocean. Freek Schepers has worked hard to add a new side to his latest scenario, Indian, so that it is now enjoyable from either perspective.

Indian_R

The war in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Barentz Sea has swung in favour of the Americans. Our long-range airpower has been destroyed and our remaining tactical fighter squadrons are barely sufficient for defense of the Motherland.

However, our alliance with China has brought good results; Thailand and Indonesia have been defeated and India has suffered terrible losses and has secretly opened Cease-fire negotiations with China and Russia.

MISSION OPERATION BRESHNJEV

Your mission is to permanently destroy the US influence in the IO. You are ordered to destroy the airbase and defensive installations on Diego Garcia. Secondly, you are ordered to sink the Maritime Prepositioning ships based at DG. These ships are pre-loaded with enough armour, artillery, and stores for 2 fighting divisions now being airlifted to the IO Theatre of war. They must be destroyed. Upon completion of your mission make your way towards Cochin, India, where repair facilities will be made available under our Cease-fire agreement.

#7 LIONHEART

Pound an enemy as much as you like but you cannot seize and hold territory from ships at sea or from aircraft aloft. You must put troops on the ground. The amphibious force now approaching Turkish shores, code-named Lionheart, must be protected. The amphibious landing will be accompanied by a major airborne assault on Cyprus. It is expected that the NSC will be pulling out all the stops to destroy these assets before they can reach their destination.

The 57th new scenario of the year has just been released!

Black Valour - EC2003 Battleset

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/4052/blackvalour3rw.th.gif (http://img508.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blackvalour3rw.gif)

A few years in the future... Tensions between Turkey and its neighbors in the Black Sea region have increased during recent years. The causes have ranged from trade issues to environmental concerns. Romania has been among the most vocal in its protests against Turkey, going so far as to threaten the use of force if Turkey continues to interfere with its international agenda. The situation has been made more serious because Ukraine has declared itself a guardian of the slavic Black Sea nations and has made it clear that Turkish aggression against any of these nations, even those it has squabbled with in the past, will not be tolerated. A few months ago, Romania purchased long-range ballistic missiles from China.

Orders:
Romania has continued to use provocative language regarding our trade, environmental, and defense policies. We maintain that our nation has acted in accordance with international law. We remain willing to address these issues in such forums as the United Nations, and to abide by the will of the global community. Unfortunately, our neighbors appear unwilling to do the same. We have reason to believe that sometime in the next few hours Romania will attack Turkish vessels in the Black Sea as "retribution" for our policies. Those ships are ordered to go on high alert, but unless they are attacked first should not fire on Romanian vessels or aircraft. If they are attacked, they are directed to defend themselves and are free to attack any other targets of opportunity. It is also possible that Romania will attack Turkish bases. Be prepared for this possibility.

If Romania should attack Turkish assets or Turkish territory, all available assets are directed to initiate Operation Black Valor. Your objectives are as follows:

1. Destroy the base at Kogalniceanu.
2. Locate and destroy the ballistic missile launchers located near Kogalniceanu.
3. Destroy any Romanian vessels you encounter.

Ukrainian aircraft have been observed near Kogalniceanu and may attempt to prevent attacks against Romania. Do not fire on these aircraft unless you are attacked first. If you are attacked, you may defend yourselves and you may attack any Ukranian assets that appear to be a threat to your forces. Do not under any circumstances attack Odessa.

This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b9 or later and also the HCDB_051221 or later in order to function properly.

The First new scenario of the year has just been released!

Incoming Mail

Incoming Mail is a rebuild of a scenario from the original paper rules of Harpoon as was published in "Battles of the Third World War." It is Dave's fourth scenario effort. Thanks for sharing it with the community.

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/4982/incomingmail8uh.th.gif (http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=incomingmail8uh.gif)

The Soviets have two weapons that can reach NATO convoys in the Atlantic: submarines and long-range aircraft. Long-range bombers on the Kola peninsula can easily hunt the Atlantic. With Iceland in Soviet hands, however, they can attack at will and their range would be greatly increased.

A standard NATO convoy crossing the Atlantic would consist of 40-50 merchant ships. Eight to ten escorts and, if they are lucky, a helicopter carrier, will provide protection from submarine and air attack.

Here, a large NATO convoy has been detected by a Soviet Radar Ocean Reconnaissance Satellite (RORSAT) and Tu-95 Bear Ds are sent out to pinpoint their position. Following close behind the Bears are two squadrons of Backfire bombers.

This could be a very bad day for NATO...

http://img319.imageshack.us/img319/4218/axisofevil3gl.th.gif (http://img319.imageshack.us/my.php?image=axisofevil3gl.gif)

The largest scenario ever written for Harpoon3 has now been digitally re-mastered and is hereby re-released for your enjoyment. It is the Mother of All Monster scenarios. Be forewarned. Examine the Readme.txt file carefully. The magnitude of this scenario may cause problems for your computer and should not be attempted by those with processor-challenged systems.

The Chinese economic bubble has burst and it has fallen into recession. The economic picture is mirrored worldwide. Russia is plunged ever further into social and monetary chaos. In an effort to raise hard currency, Russian resorts to selling almost everything within its arsenal. China moves to maintain its market share and matches prices and terms. Iran takes advantage of the prices and buys from both nations. A radical fundamentalist regime very similar to the Taliban is elected in Iran. Iran announces its nuclear power status with an atmospheric test. NATO leaders unanimously demand the immediate removal of the missiles and the extradition of Bin Laden.

The 2nd new scenario of the year!

Crete Convoy

Not even one week into the new year and Mark Gellis has published a second scenario for the Harpoon community to enjoy. At this rate, I shudder to think how many great scenarios he will produce in the upcoming year. Thanks for sharing another game with us.

Crete Convoy - EC2003 MEDC Battleset

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6964/creteconvoy6fb.th.gif (http://img208.imageshack.us/my.php?image=creteconvoy6fb.gif)

It is 1990 and the world is at war. America and its allies are gradually preparing to liberate Iran from the Soviet Union, which invaded that country earlier this year. Several allies of the Soviet Union have declared their support for the Soviet invasion.

Blue Orders:
Convoy AAS (Flag Robison) should proceed to the waters off the southern shore of Crete in preparation for a rendevous with other vessels. Once at the rendevous point, you will receive additional orders. Libya has declared its support of the Soviet invasion of Iran. It is possible that Libyan aircraft, surface vessels, or submarines will attempt to attack your convoy. Soviet submarines may also be in your area.

Greek aircraft are available to provide air support for your convoy. You are free to fire on either Libyan or Soviet assets if they attack or appear to threaten the convoy or allied assets. You are not directed at this time to attack Libyan territory.

This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b9 or later and also the HCDB_060103 or later in order to function properly.

MatchPlay
The full and complete "MatchPlay" battleset is now available!

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3328/nlvsfrance4mi.th.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nlvsfrance4mi.jpg)

The second and third rounds of the "MatchPlay" battleset have been publicly released. These four scenarios have previously been unavailable to the Harpoon public. Now that the PlayersDB contest is complete, they are hereby posted for your enjoyment.

Anyone interested in playing the battleset as a consecutive / connected series is welcome to play the first scenario in the series and send in the results to Freek Schepers at freek_schepers@yahoo.com and he will send out the next scenario in the series and customize it to your losses in the previous round.

MATCHPLAY
Terrorist attacks on the Belgium Royal family have left the Dutch Crown Prince next in line to the throne of Belgium. Popular mourning and an uprising has quickly resulted into civil war between the French-speaking Walloons in southern Belgium and the Dutch-speaking Flemish in northern Belgium. Holland has quickly moved ground forces into Belgium to assert its claim to the throne, while France has tried unsuccessfully to mobilise the UN. But, as the Israelis showed in 1967, the UN cannot operate at the pace of modern warfare…

ROUND 2:

ANTI-CARRIER PLAY
Second in the MATCHPLAY battleset, playable from the Dutch side.To reinforce the French fleet, the Carrier Charles de Gaulle is moving from the Mediterranean to Brest. The UN has stopped all combat and your mission is to sink Charles de Gaulle using your remaining Dutch submarines

CARRIER PLAY
Second in the MATCHPLAY battleset playable from French sideUN has enforced a ceasefire after a day of 'hyperwar'. The French Department of Defence has announced that around 60 Dutch F-16 fighters and a frigate have been destroyed. While the Dutch divisions in Belgium have been hit hard, reinforcements have taken their place and Flanders is firmly in Dutch hands. BDA suggests that our air strikes have destroyed the revetments, tarmacs, and hangars on Florennes and destroyed all Belgian F-16s based there on the ground. The amphibious landings on Walcheren failed within sight of the objective. All four landing ships were damaged and Jeanne d'Arc had to be towed clear of the area and is now in drydock in Brest. A shock has gone through the French press as the losses are becoming apparent; 150 (one hundred and fifty!) of our best front-line fighters destroyed, as well as two of the priceless E2 and E3 AEW planes! Never in the history of French warfare has there been such a bloody defeat against an enemy that, apart from a recent struggle with Norway over oil (See OILFIRE.SCN), has only practiced war, not waged it.The Navy has been hard hit, as well. Apart from the damage to Jeanne d'Arc, 10 Frigates and Destroyers were lost. The 10 Rafale fighters have done well before they were shot down and a few replacements have even been found straight off the production lines. The worst stain on France's honour has been that the damaged heavy lift vessels packed with Marines have had to surrender and become prisoners of war in Belgium.

ROUND 3:

SUB PLAY
Third of the MATCHPLAY battleset playable from the German (allies of France) side. The Charles de Gaulle has safely entered Brest after sinking two Dutch submarines, but losing a frigate, her last Rafale, and one of our two remaining Hawkeye's. All point-defence weapons were used up in our last action and both sides, astonished by the supremacy of defensive firepower, refrained from gun actions and withdrew. One Achilles' heel remains that we can exploit; the Dutch are totally reliant on merchant traffic to Rotterdam and Antwerp. Unfortunately, our amphibious landing on Walcheren to close the entrance to both ports failed and France lacks the resources to implement a Maritime blockade of the North Sea.

SPECIAL OPS PLAY
Third of the MATCHPLAY battleset, playable from the Dutch side.Netherlands has lost a lot of F-16s against France, but most pilots have bailed out over friendly territory and are fit to fly. Belgian F-16s, captured intact, are being readied for operations.Denmark also flies 62 F-16MLUs, based on two bases in Skrydstrup and Aalborg. A daring plan has been developed to raid the Danish airbase of Skrydstrup, neutralise the defences, bring in pilots and maintenance crews by plane, and fly the aircraft to Netherlands.

Operation Wizard
The eighth and final installment of "The Cyprus Affair" battleset has been released.
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/1994/nwcm89bc.th.jpg (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nwcm89bc.jpg)

NEW WORLD ORDER SERIES: THE CYPRUS AFFAIR CAMPAIGN #2

The NSC did not believe that NATO would intervene in the Cypriot affair after having been snubbed by its Turkish partner and after the beating it had received in the Baltic conflict the previous year.

The NSC was about to be proven wrong.

#8 OPERATION WIZARD

Although numerically plentiful, the NSC ground forces are relatively poorly trained. The operation to re-take Turkey is going well, although it is considered bloody. Cyprus has already been re-claimed. The U.S. learned valuable lessons from Desert Storm, including the following rule: it makes no sense not to finish the job. Task Force Scarecrow has moved into the Aegean and more aircraft are being ferried to newly re-built airbases in Turkey for the upcoming operation. The mission: destroy the NSC Black Sea Fleet and neutralize neighbouring military facilities in the Crimea.

SEVEN new scenarios!
Happy Chinese New Year! To help bring in the new year, Brad Leyte has released SEVEN new scenarios! Yes, that's right 1, 2, 3,....7! Everyone thought that his previous five scenario release in October was an earth-shattering event. Looks like Brad is publishing according to the prime numbers. Let's all hope that the next release is for 11 scenarios! The Year of the Dog definitely looks like a prosperous year for the Harpoon community.

Storsjoodjuret - EC2003 GIUK

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1488/storsjoodjuret5uo.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=storsjoodjuret5uo.gif)

The worst case scenario for Sweden has just come to pass. Failed promises of prosperity after EU integration, combined with persistent high unemployment, have suddenly brought down the government in Finland and replaced it with one friendly to an aggressive Russian Federation. Russian armed forces have been granted access to Finnish airspace and territory as part of a mutual defence pact. This includes the Aland Islands, which are rumoured to have been "leased" (some say sold) to Russia, and already military forces are reported to be digging in around the islands and constructing fortifications there. This is extremely alarming to Sweden, whose protests have gone unanswered in Helsinki and Moscow.

Constant Glance - EC2003 MEDC

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/3695/constant4vt.th.gif (http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=constant4vt.gif)

Relations between the Ukraine and Russia have degraded into a shooting war after a prolonged dispute over gas supplies. Elements of the US-Eastern European Task Force (EETAF), established at a forward location in Romania, are being called into action to support and defend the West friendly government in Ukraine.

Stage Fright Pt. II - EC2003 IOPG

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8113/stagefrightpt28si.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stagefrightpt28si.gif)

Chinese political influence over the path of the Asian Super Highway has threatened plans for the future expansion of Indian trade ties in Indochina. China has convinced Bangladesh and Myanmar that their economic interests would be better served by linking Chittagong with a trilateral road network with Myanmar and Kunming in China. While the Super Highway is being purpose built to advance multilateral commerce, China has been keen to extract military advantages. There is strong Indian opposition to the Chinese "meddling" in plans that they had already believed finalized. In reply, the PRC has followed up on its political pressures by convincing both Bangladesh and Myanmar to participate in high level "joint" military exercises on very short notice.

Last Stan - EC2003 IOPG

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9039/laststan7kk.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=laststan7kk.gif)

Iran's stubborn refusal to submit to the authority of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with regard to its nuclear program led to its emergency reference to the UN Security Council. Resolutions aimed at sanctioning Iran and leaving the door open for further action were vetoed by both Russia and China. The EU3 (France, Germany and the UK) and the United States nevertheless pressed ahead with their cooperative efforts to find a way to bring punitive action against Iran. The debacle in Pakistan, however, badly aggravated the situation. US intelligence discovered (thanks to a tip from the Mossad) that Pakistan had covertly assisted in the escape of mastermind Osama bin Laden across the border into Iran, and that the Al Qaida mastermind was now rebuilding its terror camps with the help of Tehran. The apparent link between terrorism and the Iranian nuclear program was too much for the EU/US coalition to accept, and the wheels were put into motion to put a stop to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Russia, China and Pakistan denied there was sufficient evidence of any such link, and vowed to oppose any aggression against Iran that had no Security Council support.

Blame it on the Kellys - EC2003 WestPac

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8363/blameitonthekellys5hp.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=blameitonthekellys5hp.gif)

A growing dispute between Indonesia and Papua-New Guinea about rights to a newly discovered uranium deposit on their mutual border has led to the intervention of China and Australia on opposite sides. China, eager to gain access to the uranium, has sent a sizeable force into the region to support the Indonesian claim. Indonesia has likewise shifted considerable military assets eastward into the disputed area. Overflights of Papua-New Guinea airspace by unknown (and presumably Chinese) aircraft have already been reported. Meanwhile, Australia is moving to support its old colony, and New Zealand is pledging assistance.

My Pet Dragon - EC2003 WestPac

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6108/mypetdragon1kl.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mypetdragon1kl.gif)

The European Union has long been unhappy with American economic and military sanctions against the People's Republic of China. In recent years, the EU has grown increasingly concerned that the sanctions were unduly stifling European prosperity by blocking access to a huge market. The EU continued to bring diplomatic pressure to bear on Washington as the sanctions dragged on, hoping that eventually they would be lifted. Instead, when American intelligence community insisted that it had discovered an apparent link between China and the Iranian nuclear weapons program, the sanctions were tightened, much to the chagrin of the EU. The focus has now shifted away from diplomacy, and the EU is determined to exploit potential economic opportunities in the PRC. Cargo ships are now enroute from the EU to China, carrying Ariane 5 rocket components from France and Type 212 submarine technology from Germany. The convoy is defended. The Americans are incensed and vow to stop the shipment.

Thirst for Victory - EC2003 WestPac

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1135/thirstforvictory8ft.th.gif (http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thirstforvictory8ft.gif)

The relationship between Singapore and Malaysia has never been particularly great, due in large part to historical sensitivities, some stemming from the time of their separation in 1965. Diplomatic level interventions by Australian in the 1980s (through the Five Power Defence Arrangement, or FPDA) helped to encourage better dialogue and cooperation, particularly in defence matters, but there remains an underlying friction between Singaporeans and Malays. Modern era difficulties include unresolved territorial and airspace disputes, customs and immigration issues, new cross-border bridges and railways, and the continued reliance of Singapore upon fresh water supplies from Malaysia.

A devastating terrorist attack on an liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker in the Malacca Straits served to aggravate these tensions, especially after Singapore called upon US Navy assistance to begin more closely patrolling the region's waterways. This did not sit well at all with Malaysia and Indonesia, both of whom held the bulk of the territorial claim to the Malacca Straits. Indonesia reacted by shutting down its brand new water pipelines to Singapore, and after huge anti-Singapore and anti-America protests in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian government followed suit. The Tuas desalination plant and the reservoir at Marina Bay were then contaminated in a new terrorist attack, and suddenly the tiny nation of Singapore was plunged into crisis.

FOUR new scenarios!
It looks like the best recipe for Harpoon scenarios is a cold winters day and a one avid scenario designer. Brad Leyte is releasing another four new scenarios for us to enjoy.

Waking the God of the Dead - EC2003 GIUK

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3771/wakingthegodofthedead8xy.th.gif (http://img37.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wakingthegodofthedead8xy.gif)

It has been said in recent years that modern warfare clearly favors the attacker. Whether true or not it is true, it is also said that this perception may encourage countries to favour pre-emption. It is certainly clear from recent conflicts that early battles usually determine the success of entire campaigns, and in fact, a highly successful pre-emptive strike may prevent (or at least delay) future war. Israel is no stranger to pre-emption. In the late 1970s, Iraq persuaded France to construct a research reactor near Baghdad. This light water nuclear reactor was named Osiraq by the French, an amalgam of the name of the Egyptian god of the dead, Osiris, with that of Iraq. This expansion of Iraqi nuclear know-how was alarming to Israel, so much so that when Israeli intelligence discovered Baghdad's intent to use Osiraq to produce weapons, the decision was made to attack and destroy the facility before it went hot. In the words of the then Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces: "The alternative is our destruction".

On 7 June 1981, the elite pilots of the IDF/AF finally spotted their target after a long low level flight through neighboring Jordanian and Saudi airspace. In little over a minute, the gleaming dome of the Osiraq reactor had been ruined by a rain of 2,000 lb iron bombs. The attack raised considerable debate over the legitimacy of anticipatory self-defence and the application of international law. Years later, when Desert Storm swept through the Gulf, the Iraqi nuclear site was struck again. But it wasn't until the concluding days of the campaign, after some nine different air strikes, that the ability of the facility to conduct nuclear research or processing was severely degraded.

Now, 25 years after the Osiraq raid, Israel once again faces a monumental decision about the value of pre-emption. Iran is pressing ahead with nuclear research despite broad international opposition and concern about it possibly acquiring nuclear weapons. The Iranian leader has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map". Its time to wake that old god of the dead.

Pinger Charlie - EC2003 GIUK

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1157/pingercharlie0yy.th.gif (http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pingercharlie0yy.gif)

During the Cold War, the Baltic Sea was the "playground" of maritime reconnaissance and electronic surveillance assets of both NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Both sides employed their assets to continuously monitor each other's activities. The West German Naval Air Arm's Atlantic maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) of Marinefliegergeschwader 3 (MFG3) "Graf Zeppelin", based at Nordholz, flew continuous patrols over the Baltic Sea and Danish approaches to monitor the buildup of Soviet naval forces which would have to transit through these waters to reach the North Atlantic. The area was vital to NATO's overall defence strategy, which depended on countering any offensive brought by Warsaw Pact forces in the event of war. ASW operations in the region were all the more difficult by constantly changing temperatures, the salinity of the shallow water, and numerous shipwrecks. ["Pinger Charlie" is the nickname given to a certain sonobuoy pattern used by MFG3 Atlantics].

Shroud Over Turin - EC2003 MEDC

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1481/shroudoverturin8qo.th.gif (http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shroudoverturin8qo.gif)

The eruption of a new civil war in the Balkans on the eve of the XX Winter Olympics drastically complicated European efforts at achieving security in Torino. The air forces of Switzerland and Italy were already working closely to ensure the Games were safe from terrorist attack, but the sudden outbreak of armed conflict on their doorstep was completely unexpected. Their accord did not cover military threats. The situation in the Balkans was still very unclear, but it appeared that several of the former territories of Yugoslavia were ganging up on Slovenia. Preliminary intelligence analysis indicated that the conflict may be rooted in tensions arising from Slovenia having joined NATO in March 2004, and if this was in fact the case, the possibility of attacks against neighboring NATO countries cannot be ruled out. The aggressors are warning against outside intervention, and previously little known factions within the former Yugoslav republics are threatening attack against the Games should NATO interfere.

Bad Moon Rising WestPac

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1908/badmoonrising5yv.th.gif (http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=badmoonrising5yv.gif)

The launch of a Chinese lunar module experiment has failed, with the spacecraft returning to earth somewhere in the central Sea of Okhotsk (according to USAF Space Command). What is alarming, however, is that a scientist from the Chinese space program has defected to Japan, and he has some ominous news. He claims that the rocket was actually carrying an anti-satellite weapon that was being launched by the PRC as a prelude to an impending attack against Taiwan. The race is on to recover the module.

The 15th new scenario of the year!

Congratulations to Christopher Stoner [a.k.a. DarkNite] who is the thirteenth scenario designer to release a scenario for the community to enjoy. This is Chris' first scenario and it looks like one torn straight from newspaper headlines. Thanks for sharing it with us, Chris. We look forward to many more to come.

Prelude WestPac

Admiral Chen Loo looked over the morning paper with terse disbelief. Taiwanese intelligence had recently delivered corroborated evidence that an oil exploration team working for a joint Chinese/Philipino consortium and using the latest petroleum exploration techniques had confirmed the existance of enormous oil and natural gas deposits in the contested South China Sea. His ROC naval intelligence officer had immediately tied this to recent activities in the region which made an offensive operation to claim the disputed area a distinct possibility.

Monitoring assets had detected shipping activities preparing for embarkation in Guangzhou that included troops, weapons, and equipment earmarked for apparently mundane purposes, but all focusing on operations in the South China Sea. Believing it too much to be a coincidence, Admiral Chen had recommended subtle shifts in the

Taiwanese defense posture to guard against a sudden Chinese incursion. Although the national leadership had agreed, they also showed great concern about the growing ties between the Chinese and Filipino governments. China had invested heavily in the Philippines as of late, including the renovation of the old US Navy Subic Bay facility in Luzon- ostensibly to support 'resource recovery operations'- and the provision of older Chinese patrol vessels and F-7M Airguard aircraft to supplement the Filipino military. Against Admiral Chen's wishes, they had brokered a deal with Malaysia, who also had a claim on the contested region, and aligned with them to repel any Chinese mischief.

Now all his careful subterfuge was for naught. The headlines of the morning papers across Asia blared the news of the massive oil find, leaked to the public by a disgruntled survey worker. The cat was out of the bag and China would be moving quickly to consolidate their hold on the chain of islands, reefs, and cays that would solidify their claim on the energy reserves.

The Spratly Islands - Admiral Chen looked to the situation board. His initial forces were still in transit. The Chinese had several warships sortie and the transports he had been watching sailed from their southern ports. More concerning was the sudden increase in activity flaring at the Chinese military facilities across the Taiwan Strait. Knowing that the jig was up, they were escalating issues here to pin down Taiwanese forces and keep them from responding in the Spratlys.

His eyes focused on a small speck in the middle of the South China Sea. Taiping Island, barely a kilometer square, was the largest land mass in the region. It was Taiwan's only possession in the Spratlys and a direct affront to the Chinese claim. Grabbing his hat, Admiral Chen hurried for the operations center.

This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b10 or later and also the HCDB_060103 or later in order to function properly.
