2 times now SPWWII has caused an error that crashes my whole system. Once during a scenario and once upon exiting. Is anyone else having this problem?

The blue screen of death.
Do you play from a boot disk or from a windows msdos prompt - or just straight windows.
Running in DOS seems to work best.

Which brings something else to mind : This is actually quite funny now;
now that Battle Star Galactica is on the air again and we have machines!!asking people if they are 'alive' - ironic isn't it imagine being a sentient machine and people everywhere automatically state that you are a machine and are therefore not "alive" and without a soul.
- of course the Galactica Ceylons always kill the humans after asking this question
- much akin to the way sex kills an erection
- though some wargamers might not complain being asked by such an attractive female machine etc .. then die just as their erection would.
:D   their point is clear .. if it is broken and can't be fixed, that is, made "alive" then why bother.

Your DOS conflicting program of SPWW2 is just such a beast. Do you try to fix it or do you just accept that it is no longer viable and simply throw it away.

I don't use the WW2 but I do use the MBT. It appears to run ok in XP but I know it is only a matter of time till I too post like you have -- say has anyone else ??????

In closing a word of caution, switching to an older model of computer and older Windows product won't fix the problems either - I recall I would get a game crash on a 486 everytime a halftrack nebelwerfer direct fired! and that was just the tip of the iceberg.

I can't recount the number of times that once I passed turn four the pbem files would not open and freeeze the computer forcing a reboot !!! - these problems will always exist and the passage of time will only make things worse [new drivers with new properties that require new Windows products to be fully functional etc ..... ] But these models are still around and still ahve their uses.

Funny you should be ranting about the very thing I have been contemplating recently. I have a good many wargames on PC. Someday these games no matter how good may not work due to changes in the pc industry. Granted this will not affect my games for sometime to come yet as I have not even upgraded to XP yet but this is still producing a couple of effects.

A. I am thinking that I am just about done buying PC Wargames for a while. I will just content myself with what I have with one or two possible exceptions.

B. I have begun to investigate board games...LOL  ASLSK is on the way in fact and I have Lock n Load. Even if ASL were to ever go to a 3rd edition rules, this would not dictate that I would need to switch.

First thing to always remember when dealing with wargames.

Computers change and often screw things up, but your dining room table will always work properly :)

Computers do a lot of cool things ... when they work.

But I have never had trouble making one of my good board games run.

There's a group of people who are unhappy with the way the industry is running and want to regulate it.

The group is consumers against obsolescence. They advocate standards that the industry would have to obey. In this way they hope to keep CDROMS romming into the future and DVD's vd'ing into the futures as well.

The hope is that we won't have to reupdate our films and music and computer peripheals so much if these standards were enforced.

They seem to have a worthy end in mind.
It would certainly help wargames in that classics would exist as time progresses much as paper'n'cardboard game classics continue to be the classics they are. Afterall cardgames/puzzles etc and many other fine selections exist today much as yesterday. Young people continue to progress thru these games as did their parents.
