View Full Version : What Cool CM Detail Do You Enjoy?

Thought we could discuss a few of the "details" that makes CM such a great game, to help the newbies and the people who are on the fence to understand our game better.

I will begin with this. In a current game I had two Marder II's (open topped self propelled gun) parked close together. The one on the right took a catastrophic hit from my opponents tank and brewed up. The resulting explosion (blast/shrapnel) wounded the crew of the Marder on the left and effectively knocked out both vehicles.

Now if that's not cool I don't know what is!

The cool things I like are really pathetic - like travelling alongside a Tank as it trundles across the countryside, listening to British troops in CM:AK shout "Run away! Run away!" at each other in true Monty Python style when they are under fire, or just sitting with your men manning a gun battery and listening to them talk to each other as they acquire targets and open fire. Explosions are nice too.

I'm so shallow...

Just the other night, I caught a glimpse, out of the corner of my eye, my T-34 erupting in fire and smoke. I backed up the replay, focused on the tank, to see where the shot came from. I did the replay, located the source, and backed up the replay again. I adjusted the LOS, at zoom level 1, and played back the replay again. I watched a Mk IV belch smoke, and saw a projectile approach, getting larger as it got closer, and watch my tank erupt, as noted before. I played that back several times. Really cool.

Then, there is the detail Doc pointed out in one game. My Russians and his Germans were contesting a light building, next to one of the objective flags. "Fisticuffs" could be heard emanating from the building.

The game is filled with nice details, that add to the experience. In CMAK, looking up at a glaring sun is painful. In a CMBB night scenario, I saw the crescent moon. Really helps to et the mood.

Now, if FOW was really that, when it comes to visible terrain. I would prefer having an LOS that was realy an LOS. I can see the whole map, but my LOS is limited to about a 100 meters. I would like it if in-game (user) visibility was really limited to that. Would greatly add to the tension.

Details, details. Makes it fun.

The terrain is what I like about CM. Most of my wargaming experience comes from Steel Panthers which while an utterly nifty game still leaves much to be desired in how it handles terrain elevations. In CM you get the realistic small curves and folds that isn't there in SP. Also like Doc Sinister said, being able to watch the battle from "grunt" level, particularly riding with my tanks as they rumble through the smoking ruins of my opponents armour.

Also, while I can't do it yet without giving my old PC a heart attack in the process, being able to setup and fight a massive division size battle in the scenario editor.

Finally just being able to tweak and edit the sound and graphics.

Apart from just becoming totally imersed in the
tactical gameplay,(I sometimes have to go and
have a cigarette outside with my imaginary
generals, and ponder the next move :) )I'd say
putting the camera down at tank level and cheering
on an inferior tank like an early sherman as it out
flanks a tiger and scores a kill in the rear.

Or geting down with your troops as they sneak up
and kill tanks from close range with bundle grenades and gammon bombs is always satisfying.

Yeah, first time I heard it I had to rewind the move several times to make sure I'd heard it right!

The sound.

Hanging out on view level 1 between a bunch of tanks plugging away at some jerks on the other side, and then suddenly hearing the 155mm VT coming in and going off in huge fireballs all around you, and you hear your tank commanders button up (if they still can).

Unfortunately other factors mostly ruined CM for me by now but there are some really cool items in there.

Don't worry about things you cannot control,...relax, enjoy the game for what it is.

I like killing German tanks,...nothing better than outflanking some Nazi swine and and watching him and his super-tank die, die, die,...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

BOOOOMMMM!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

BURN YOU SON-UVA-B*TCH, BURN!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

My needs are quite simple.

Like many of you it's the sound, especially your troops' 'chatter'. It's the kind of detail that elevates CM above other tactical level wargames.

For me it's the little nice touches within the game. For example, In one BB game against the computer, I had to get a convoy of four trucks down a straight road knowing that partisans were ready to ambush them. In front of the trucks was an armoured car leading the way. I gave them all the ' fast' move order, hit the ' GO! ' button and watched what happened :)
In perfect order they moved off, gaining speed down the road!
A squad of partisans suddenly opened up halfway down the road but the armoured car opened up on them as it flew by, making them eat dirt!
The two leading trucks weren't so lucky though and you could hear the bullets hitting them from some unseen partisans lying in wait. The first truck got knocked out but continued to roll down the road and then very slowly came to a stop in some scattered trees. The other truck must of been carrying ammo as there was a huge explosion and that too continued rolling down the road, coming to stop by a wood. Luckily the crew got out and legged it to the nearest friendly unit! :D
Little touches like that make Combat Mission the top game in my book! :salute:

I'm tempted to either dig up from my old wav collection or surf the internet for a wav of Hudson from the movie Aliens screaming "Game over man!! Game over!!" and importing it into CMAK. :D

The fluid battles, everything is a delicate machinery and runs like clockwork when those 60 seconds of battle is resolved. It enables you to create the perfect mix between fire, movement and cover. In other words, the game allows real tactics.

But that probably wasnt a detail... :hush:

I also have the WAV file and that would be cool to hear the Americans say that, or when there is CQB in a building having them yell " You want some...come on You want some"
There are alot of good one liners in that movie.

The best part for me is like to ride along with my boys and see the enemy run across and open field and then open up on them with my MG or HE round from a tank.
I have been playing this game for years and I still love it, it never gets old.

I decided to listen through some of the wav:s included in the game. My findings led to the conclusion that the line "You burn, you BURN, your mother..." is the foulest i could find. A bit dissapointing really... but on the other hand, i dont understand either Italian or French. :whist:

I meant that the movie ALIENS has a lot of good one liners!!!!
That would sound good and or funny in the game.

No I am swedish, not stupid :p

I know what you meant, I however, was talking about one-liners in general, and those in CM in particular.

Aliens is as you said the goldmine for quotes that would fit CM, just to cut and paste: "Gameover.wav" (http://www.uselessmoviequotes.com/files/gameover.wav)

I enjoy going in to a tanker's eye view, zooming in on the target and watching the out-going 75mm rounds arc their way to a kill some 1500m away and hearing the celebratory Ja! as another one of my crappy T-34 goes up in flames.

Anyone else here ever pause a move to catch sight of a shell in mid-flight?

Or is that just me... :o

I had a really cool shot of two AP shells passing each other on the same path, they were seperated by about 2m in height. The "high" one found it's target, the low on hit just in front of it's.

Now that was cool! :)

I've seen it maybe three times in all the games so far and it is always fun. Two tanks fire at each other within milliseconds and at longe range,...you sit back and watch the shells pass each other in mid-flight from various angles....the shots strike home within a second of each other,...both tanks die.

Yeah, happens all the time. Really annoying - you go from a major high to a massive downer in about half a second.

Sort of "OH YES!!" followed immediately by "Oh crap...".

In a game I played just today I had a German Mortar HT park right on top of a Russian AT team. A PzIV about 500 yards away starts firing at the AT team and kills the HT. You just dont get FF incidents like that in other games. The HT crew were not happy..........

I have to agree with the majority here and say the dialouge has got to be the coolest. It's also helpful to listen in and find out what your enemy is up to ... :halo:

The modding capabilities of the series is a plus too, I think. There're some great ones out there that nicely add to the atmosphere of the game.

When the German infs are low on ammo they sometimes scream out "Sheize!! Ich habe keine ammunition!" which translates into "****!! I'm out of ammo!"
