View Full Version : Der Wanderer Tür: Hints and tips for Newbies
The best way I found to exchange, save and archives turn files is the following one, it comes from advicesof an good toaw player MikeJ
the scenario name is weserburung version 1.0
1st put your initials in head of name filefor me JLB followed by the side you play by instance German
it gaves
JLB GER WESERBURUNG 1.0, then add after this the turn number
a small hint when you will look to the files under windows you will see the following 1.txt, 11.txt, 2.txt rather thean 1.txt, 2.txt, 11.txt, to avoid this use 01 11 02 it will look the following under windows 01.txt, 02.txt, 11.txt
so our name will look like this
JLB GER Weserburung 1.0 T01.pbm
it will help a lot you and your opponent

I use a different naming convention. The default save file name, with the following inserted into the file name, without quote marks, "Player 1 initials (or username)""v""Player 2 initials (or username)""-"Opponents side""Turn number to be played". This is short for Player 1 versus Player 2, and defines the game turn of your opponent. This way, in mirrored games, you always know which turn you are supposed to be opening, or sending.
Example: Assume playing mirrored games of Barbarossa 41 against jlbetin, the end of turn file to be saved would default to Barbarossa 41.PBL If I were playing turn 9 as player 1 (the Axis), the file name would be changed to
Barbarossa 41-JAMvJLB-SovietTurn9.PBL
and if I were playing turn 9 as player 2 (the Soviets) I would change the file name to
Barbarossa 41-JLBvJAM-AxisTurn10.PBL
I also use a modification of this convention when saving the "last look" at a turn, after I've saved the .PBL for sending to my opponent. In this case though, since the file is saved as a .SAL, and it gives the turn number in the default file name, I merely insert to name as the following examples:
LastLook-JAMvJLB-Barbarossa 41 9.SAL
LastLook-JLBvJAM-Barbarossa 41 9.SAL
The ordering of the initials, in this case, being sufficient to define which player turn it is for my save.
As far as keeping track of who needs to be sent a turn, I simple keep my email messages in my inbox, until I've played the turn and replied. After the reply, the message is either deleted, or archived. If I've got your email floating around in the inbox, then I know that I need to send you a turn. If not, then you need to send me a turn.
As to passwords, I made the decision a long time ago to use the same password for all of my games, unless it is a pure test, in which case the password is simply "test".
I deeply encourage you to read carefully this article of Siberian Heat

Yes, I use something like this. I like having the scenario name first so all the files for that scenario sort together. That's really handy if I'm going to do an AAR.
