View Full Version : Virus Issue
I am in the middle of two pbem games and having a blast. Everything was going along just fine up until the last day or two. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or any insight.
When I attempted to download the turns from both of my opponents I have been getting an "incurable virus" reading from Hotmail email. I have scanned both of the files as well as my system and according to Norton's Antivirus there is nothing.
My opponent's have done the same with similar results.
Therefore, I can only guess it is something wrong with Hotmail. So I am curious if anyone else uses Hotmail when playing, if so, does it work well or have problems. Second, perhaps somebody can suggest another free email site they use that gets the job done.
This is frustrating so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use yahoo mail. Yahoo! Mail
Free, reliable, and easy to use.
Great spam protection with SpamGuard
Virus scanning from Norton AntiVirus™
Access anywhere you have a web connection
A whopping 250MB email storage.

I also use Yahoo and have no complaints.

Yeah, it's the best free service I know of, other than its annoying habit of dropping some of my opponent's messages into the bulk mail folder. However, those are generally users of Hotmail that get that treatment...

i have the same problem than you have
this is due to hotmail who is very stupid to think that toaw files are viruses dammit. and it's a recent change, like 2 or 3 days ago.
you can still work with hotmail but you'll have to use zip and the same for your opponents
as a free account yahoo is definitely the best as the other guys have said
the 100mb storage that comes with it is just perfect for toaw

Not really connected with the game I'm afraid, but I regard Hotmail as an infested scourge of viruses. A few years ago I was getting so many viruses sent to me from Hotmail addresses (several a day), I had to impose a blanket ban on receiving mail from anyone with a Hotmail account - and thus anything with a Hotmail address was automatically deleted from my mail Server without me even seeing it. As a result, I lost contact with a whole load of people for about a year, but unfortunately I had no choice.

That is odd- I dropped Yahoo for precisely the same reason earlier this year. I really didn't want to as it was a good service, especially in that the voice chat and digicam actually would work from behind a router-unlike Messenger.
Perhaps I'll try it again.
I bought the Internet suite of McAffe it seems to resolve many problems

I don't use any kind of web-based mail program, although Mrs Sinister does.
I now have five levels of anti-spam and anti-virus protection.

I just sent myself a TOAW file to my hotmail, and received it without complaint. Might be because I use my hotmail account with outlook express.
The hotmail account of one of my opponents as just declared my Braunschweig pbl file a virus. How uneducated...:D
News (http://news.com.com/Hotmail+dumps+McAfees+antivirus+for+Trend+Micro/2100-7350_3-5497273.html?part=rss&tag=5497273&subj=news.7350.5) has it that Hotmail recently changed its antivirus - could be the explanation.

I use G-Mail ,(Google's mail service) free, and a 1000mb email storage.
Jean-Luc, why buying Mc Affee's products when you can be protected for free ?
Try Zone Alarm (Firewall), Antivir, and Spybot, against spywaresn adwares, etc. :D

Hot Mail has just dumped McAffee. They have signed up an outfit called Trend Micro. Went into effect today; hopefully this will be an improvement for the Hotmail users. The Trend stock is moving.

You mean Hotmail?
M$ owns hotmail so theoretically you could send your complaint to M$ and the right person would take action-LOL- better off to notify hotmail directly no doubt. I actually recieved promt service on a complaint earlier this year by the hotmail staff.
Is this problem still ongoing with the new security company?
