With the first round of the CMBB Top Players Tourney wrapping up I have posted the scenario played. Based on player suggestions & comments I've made some modifications to said scenario.

This is primarily PBEM based although it can be played from either side.

Always appreciate contributions to our scenario archive! Thanks Palantir! :coolban:

Kerry, any major changes since we play tested it?

As far as major, hmmm.

Modifications include: terrain, upped some of the Soviet armor, moved around some of their reinforcement locations & advanced their timing (giving more "on-map" time to all Soviet units), plus some very minor tweaks to the Germans.

I take it the soviets were having a rough go of it? I thought it was close with a slight edge to the axis.

Is the scenario available for download?

No, I don't think the changes are designed to help the Soviets have an easier time of it. I would, personally, suggest that this scenario is a fairly easy win for a Soviet commander who fights the terrain and the enemy and NOT the accepted wisdom of the scenario.

E.g. Analyse the terrain and the likely enemy force composition and don't get so hung up on what the scenario wants and I think it becomes a much easier win for the Soviets than might, at first, appear.

A good example of this would be opting to be defender in a game of CM but deciding to attack the attacker. When done on appropriate terrain with a good force mix and an appropriate tactical approach the "misnomered defender" can easily win massive victories despite being hugely outnumbered. IOW slavish attention to what the scenario seems to demand is often extremely detrimental whereas analysing the terrain, enemy forces and friendly potentialities can allow one to exceeed what a more "conventional" approach would otherwise achieve.

Anyways, that's a very long-winded way of saying that, if anything, the game favours the Soviets since they have the freedom to manoeuvre. I would wager that most Soviet players who found the game tough going found it so due to incomplete capitalisation on this, supreme, advantage.

If you attack a fortified line along its length you will suffer massively. If you isolate, penetrate and dislocate you can achieve victory at a miniscule cost.

Cerainly this is what I found when I played this. There is some excellent terrain providing covered routes for transverse movement, good intervisibility lines to aid isolation and even almost perfectly way-pointed dead ground. The terrain is there, you just need to capitalise upon it as the Soviets (IMO).

Of course, that's just my take on it but I certainly think the Soviets could romp this if they play to their advantages and assiduously avoid Germano-Hungarian strengths.

I haven't seen any of the changes since I play tested it several times from both sides, so I can't comment on it's current status. However, it seemed to favor the Axis at that time, even with isolating and attacking in force. Well placed wire and mines could channel the Soviet inf into less desirable positions.

I'll have to take a look at now and check out the tweaks.

Lets just say that somebody destroyed the Axis defenders in the Balaton scenario... :whist:

That wouldn't happen to be you, would it? :)

 I wish! :D

No, that was accomplished by another player. :hmmm:

I have an extremely hard time playing "fairly" against my own designs. I tend to play anticipating what I know WILL happen instead of what is happening, (like going over to what I know is a good "designed in" LOS spot to kill incoming enemy reinforcements etc.) I just don't play fair against myself!

Which is why I rely heavily on experienced players to test them who don't know 1000% of what is designed into a particular scenario. :halo: :salute:

I'm sure much of any allies success in the scenario depends on the defensive disposition. But before I say more I'll go over the latest changes. :D
