Siberian HEAT comments: Superb. One of the best!
JL is a very good player, so I can only attribute this draw to his long convalescence these past few months. We started the game before he went out...and just finished it upon his return. Probably a few cobwebs.
This game was heading directly for an Overwhelming Defeat for the Germans...and I think both sides knew it. The allies were in Cherbourg on turn 11, the score was sitting at OD when I opened turn 12. However, on turn 11 (seeing one glimmer of hope) I set up my forces and attacked a few key units in his line that would send recon units deep into his army that was approaching St. Lo. Typically, both sides shy away from striking at recon units because of their tendency to burn turns away. I was betting that either he would refrain from attacking my recon for this reason, or, would simply believe there was no value in attacking a couple recon units since the game was undoubtedly over.
When I opened turn 12, my recon units were still sitting there, with only one ZOC to pass through between me and Foret de Cerisy! Luckily my recon unit passed between the two enemy units and easily made it to park on that hex. For those that don't know, this hex is worth a full 30VP for the Germans, and exactly countered his capture of Cherbourg. That move, combined with some counterracks to capture small 1 and 2 VP hexes here and there helped bump my score just into the DRAW category. I knew that JL wouldn't be happy...since I know he was confident of an OV when he sent the turn to me. :)
The Allied forces were stacked up to the North of St. Lo, but were still a few turns from reaching the city. Caen was a real mess, as he had closed all around the city with surprisingly strong forces...but wasn't able to flank the city or pass through on his way to Bourguebus Ridge. Cherbourg was the only major site that fell... All in all a very tough game, and only one small mistake by my French friend kept him from a major Allied victory.
Welcome back JL! :)

It couldn't have happened to a better person. I can just imagine the French countryside hearing some new curse words when you opened up the final PBEM file to see that battered recon unit sitting there. And to think I almost threw in the towel and bagged the game when I opened up turn 11 because I though it was hopeless.
Just goes to prove, you don't score, until you SCORE!

hey,
have been following some threads.
Good to have you back.
Kind of a painful return though, it sounds like.
Which scenario?
Doesn't say in this thread, or does it?

that's kind of scenario you can lose on last turn if you don't have garrisoned your objectives correctly and that you have a hole in your lines.
but as jl was playing allied, i suppose he had enough forces to garrison objectives, it's just that he has forgotten about it i think
Hey JL don't lose your temper (and your pride :D ) and act like me, when you lose an overwhelming defeat, just say:
"The harsh battle for Normandy knows a SURPRISING outcome as I was winning-cause-I'm'-The-Best but my computer crashed while I was playing the LAST TURN, so I've losed." :cheeky:
CONGRATULATIONS SIBERIAN HEAT

I have played that scenario PBEM and found it one though nut to crack playing the Allies.
I doubt any newbie would have a chance of winning as the Allies.

I almost pulled the same thing in our game...
I made a push for the Pegasus Bridge on turn 12 and won the battle in the Pegasus Bridge hex, but my unit failed to retreat to claim the hex. I couldn't figure out a way to push some junk units onto the hex so I could overrun them and slip in there for the significant victory. Still, I felt very fortunate to have secured a marginal victory against a determined opponent in that game too.
