Might get a bit quiet in this area then when everybody disappears to go off and play it. :D
I'm an "undecided" on whether to buy it or not.
Dr. S.
OOOOOOOH! I'm so pumped for this!
I'm going to try to either stay up till midnight tonight (pacific time) and play, or wake up early and play. I already bought it, and its just waiting to be unlocked....
Just to wet appetites:
http://pc.ign.com/articles/566/566202p1.html
"If you're a fan of Half-Life, action games in general, or are looking for a way to get into PC gaming, this is it. It'll hook you, reel you in, and hold you captive for serious hours of hardcore brilliance. This is gaming at its best and shows that the future holds no bounds when the might of technology, precision of design, and touch of artistry work in tandem." -IGN, 9.7/10
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2/review.html?q=1&tag=gs_hp_flashtop_story
"When you combine the strong single-player campaign of Half-Life 2 with the popular online play of Counter-Strike, the result is one of the most complete and compelling first-person shooter packages available. While Half-Life 2 breaks little new ground, it's still a superb and engaging first-person shooter, as well as an amazing technological accomplishment." -Gamespot, 9.2/10
And IIRC PC Gamer gave it a 9.8/10....
An example of the wonderful physics from the IGN review-
"When Gordon breaks out the gravity gun, it's all about using the environment to your advantage. If an enemy hides behind a car, flip it over on top of him. If ammo is in short supply simply use the gravity gun to pick up and fling deadly objects at enemies, including exploding barrels, saw blades, and more. Block entrances to doorways with bookcases and tables. Use metal objects as bullet shields. The varieties of options that open to you are immense and only limited by your style of play and creativity."
__________________________________________________ ________
I'm just excited for the technological advancements, and I can't wait for the mods, especially one that will make full use of the physics in a multiplayer enviroment.
And it looks like the gamespot rating is on the LOW end of the scale:

I'll be staying up to play it at 3am local time. For those that don't know, if you have it on your computer it will be playable at 800Z (8am GMT) - midnight Pacific time (where Valve is located).

Is this game going to be like Doom 3? We will need a nuclear powered computer graphics card to play it?
Nah, the tech behind it isn't quite as consuming. You're still going to want a pretty beefy box, but it doesn't have to be BLEEDING edge (it just won't be as pretty).
Is this game going to be like Doom 3? We will need a nuclear powered computer graphics card to play it?
As Overseer said, it isn't quite as bad as Doom 3. If you want to post your specs we could give you a better idea...You would need probably 512 mb of RAM, 1 gb would be prefered.

If I could find that PC Gamer with HL2 feature/review, I could tell you what Valve suggested for a low end, mid range, and high end machine... :bandit:
This is one of the most incredible games I've ever seen. One of the guys in my apartment walked in, looked at it, and said, "This looks real." It's amazing. And it grips you from the beginning.

The graphics are not quite up to Doom III standards, but they are very good. So far the game is much better than Doom (and I liked Doom).

I'll agree that there are some areas where doom 3 wins out graphically but overall, I think the visuals are more impressive on this (of course I'm running it on almost all the top settings). But this is coming from me, a hardcore Doom fan...
My take:
HL2- Of the little I have played so far..it is awesome. The player models and animations are superb, same with the graphics and physics.
Steam: I hate this thing. I come back from school anxious to play HL2, and I can't because the service is down. Many others are having the same problem also. Its sad that I can't play a single-player offline game because I can't log into an online service.

Uhhh. Steam has an offline mode man.

The catch is, you need to log onto steam, then choose to go into offline mode, and log off. To go into offline mode, you need to choose it online. You may be able to edit some config files w/o the internet, but I don't want to mess anything up.

Any time it had trouble connecting for me, it would just ask if I wanted to play in offline mode. For example, the point is actually to be used when you can't connect to the internet. Worst case, disconnect for a second, load it, and then reconnect.

You are a lucky one then.....I never got that message, and several others have had the problem I had. It could be that my password is not saved, and yours is...saw a suggestion to that affect on some forum. But it looks like the problem is fixed so I'm happy now....except I want that gravity gun....mind telling me when I get it? (I'm not even out of the canals yet...man they last forever).
What min system requirements would you suggest in order to get a decent experience.
I'm sitting at...

R 9800 Pro
Should I steer clear of this game?

The 9800 pro is definatly ok. The computers at Valve that reviewers used ran 9800's, so that says something about the performance. The RAM is decent, the processor is the only thing I would worry about. Min requirement is a 1.2, recommended is a 2.4....:nervous:
I hate to say it, but I don't know what to say. Hopefully in the next couple of days we will get some performance numbers on various machines.

Marines, your PC fits with at least their low end specs. I think you should be pretty good. Unfortunately, I doubt there will be a demo so I'm a little worried in saying a definite yes.
And beavs... the grav gun is so much freaking fun.

CS:S is at least a lot better than CS (and I played CS for years).
It's repetitive depending on how you play it. I'm extremely competitive so it's less monotonous to me. And there are enough different things you can do in a map that make a big difference. Actually did brief study on behavior in CS with game theory. :p
I don't know. Personally, I feel that CS:S is way overrated. It's one of the most repetitive titles I've ever played and the maps are boring boring boring.
I don't like a lot of the maps, though I think CS_office is a masterpiece. As far as it being overrated...I think a lot of it has to do with the community. I think it could be much better though. Playing Half-Life 2 has made me realize what the potential is for the engine, and frankly, CS: S disappoints because it could do so much more.
I can't wait for Day of Defeat: Source, and some good mods for HL2...
On another note...there is HL2 multiplayer, built in, supposedly. http://cleverly-stupid.co.uk/hl2/hl2mp.htm
I haven't tried it, but I wouldn't doubt that it is in there. I can't wait for a MP with the gravity gun.
*SPOILER WARNING!*
Don't read if you haven't gotten past Ravenholm!
What map is after Ravenholm? I'm not a big fan of the whole zombie/gore thing (I know, HL2 isn't the best for my type :D), so I need to know what map is after that so I can skip to it with some cheat codes...I just want to skip the creepy Ravenholm stuff.

DDR RAM is excellent, and your CPU is pretty good. Don't know about in Canada, but 200 USD will get you a Radeon 9800 pro here, although 200 is a lot of money just to play a game :D.

Drop the AA, you only need 2x AA at best.
Often times, radeons don't do as well with AA as NVIDIAs do. Also, make sure your drivers are up to date (and actually there are 4.12 beta drivers that are optimized for HL2, I'll find a link to them at some point if you're interested).

That is a good article, especially if you have an older card, and want to see what features you will lose graphics-wise.
Ivan: As far as the 9800 pro not working as advertised....the AA is really killing it. I would recommend 8x AF if you can, and lowering or dropping AA. Anistropic Filtering will make texture transitions better.

Ravenholm was very Resident Evil like...was a few tricky bits too.
I'm actually in chapter "Entanglement" - and I've been dying at one point repeatedly - when you get there, you'll know which one :D
Marines;
running on my games machine;
P4 2.6Ghz
1 Gig Ram
9800XT
however...
I tested it on my old comp, and it runs well enough to play
P4 2GHz
768MB ram
9600XT (256MB)
from what I cna gather from the Steam forums, processor is more important than gfx card. Though I'm not sure <shrug>
all, there seems to be large numbers of people who have both stuttering audio and graphics (I get these just after loading times...on both comps) but doesn't affect the game at all though.

the processor is what I'd try and find more about. The gfx card and RAM would do the trick. The game isn't as resource intensive as Doom3, so even if you couldn't run that, I wouldn't give up hope.
hell, I played OPF on old AMd 800MHz w/ 256ram AND onboard gfx online well enough...sure models were missing, and I couldn;t really aim as the lag between mouse and onscreen movements was a factor - but dammit, I still played :D

Thanks James I appreciate it.
From what you've said I think I'll leave it on the shelf.
OK I had the game in my hands at Walmart today but left it there: the box says I need an internet connection so I got thinking, is this game primarily a multiplayer game and has a solo mission pack kind of a deal? I wanted to ask someone at the store, but they don't know anymore than I do.
I'm a little ways out of Nova Prospekt, I think I can guess where you were stuck.
As for Ravenholm, I think it was my favorite part of the game so far. On one side, because it was more horror based (which is more in my taste) and two, because of the grav gun and the saw blades. ;)
Dannybou:
The internet connection is required when you first install it, just to authenticate with Valve that the CD-Key and such is legitimate. After that you can play offline. The single player is the point of the game. There is multiplayer, but it is in fact not really HL2 multiplayer but Counter-Strike: Source (a quasi-realistic based counter-terrrorist vs. terrorist game).
Marines:
My guess is that you'll be able to play it, but the quality may not be fantastic. :(

No, the game is just very highly developed to scale down what it does on older graphics cards.
So if you got an older card it will just not look as good as on a new-generation card but run not much slower.
They practically have three different graphics engines and default to one that suits your card.
There's nothing they do if you don't have enough CPU.
I really become envious when I hear all the systems specifications of some people here.... :sniff:
Here is an article explaining who slower cards don't play the game slower and what kind of image quality setback you suffer:

I probably wouldn't call it the best game ever, but the Chapter: Follow Freeman! has to be one of the best single player "grabs" for pure intensity, plus setting and goals - top notch in my book.

Go to steam news or halflife2 websites. Some fixes have been posted for cache file problems.
Lot of activity while I was sleeping!
In Marines case, if it would run at all, it should look pretty. The only question is the CPU, and if that would run the game, then the 9800 pro would take care of the graphics, and it would run them very well.

But I sometimes get a bit of stutter for no apparent reason ( it turned into major stuttering when I was teleporting). Any of you guys had this happen to you?
What settings are you running it on?
As for the teleporter...I wish some game had a sequence where everything actually worked...I bet 90% of the people knew that was coming...:D

best part of the game?
easily Our Benefactors - running around with the uber-Gravity Gun.
Gobeavs - that was the bit I was stuck on for ages...if you want a cheesy, easy way to get through it, PM me - I'm ashamed to admit I resorted to gamey tactics to win that bit...
Anyone else love how your squad mates completely ignore your orders? "Stay here, so the turrets don't kill you" seems to become, "Follow me, and stand around getting shot at while I try and disarm the damned things!" :D
btw, if you start a new game after completion, when you get the GG again, it;s the uber variety :D Makes ravenholm easier :D

So far...I think the best part is - don't laugh....the beginning. Before you even get a weapon, running away from the combine soldiers in the apartment building, with all of the people so scared..that was so immersive. It could have been I was still in awe over the graphics and everything, I just remember as fearing for my life there :D.

Hmmm...I should have asked this before - what are your system specs?
I bet it is either your CPU can't handle some of the more intense parts. Or your RAM can't, the latter probably the case if you have <512 mb.

My system specs are a P4 3Ghz with 1G RAM and a ATI 9800XT. This should be anti-sttutering specs, don't you think?
Also, the problem isn't slowdowns in performance, but something I can only describe as stuttering...

There is some bug that Valve verified exists. Check the cannonical game newssites.

I get it also, after saving or loading, but after a few seconds, it goes away...
Don't know about the graphical stuttering...:(
Around forums, people have been able to get some basic coop games going on the internet. It isn't fully functional yet, and there are a lot of bugs to be worked out, but it is something. They have been able to get some basic deathmatch going also, so it looks like there really may be a HL2 online play, just in its early stages. Maybe a later patch from Valve will unlock its full potential...

It won't come from Valve, the basic features are just built into Source, in this case, to be used by mod developers. Valve seems content to focus on single player additions for now.

There were rumors that a MP component would be released shortly after the release...I can only hope...

I sure do wish Team Fortress 2 would finally get some work done on it.
A new update:
"This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behavior."
"Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community."

It should auto-update HL2, you may need to restart STEAM...even though it wasn't too bad, its nice they fixed the stuttering (or hopefully so). I can't wait for the "suprise"! Can anyone say HL2 multiplayer? Or even.....co-op? :D
I shouldn't get my hopes up though, chances are it won't be...

I have a similar system and run it at 1280x1024 (or whatever the exact numbers are for that resolution!) with no problems! Valve recommends you check all of your drivers to see if they are up to date.
I really think Valve did a great job with the good graphics, best faces i've seen to date in a game, and fun gameplay in HL^2. IMHO, i think it looks better than Doom and FarCry. However, I like the dense foliage, toggle crouch, and toggle prone in FarCry that I don't find in HL^2!
Also, what is up with the counterstrike game? I guess its popularity eludes me. The maps are plain, folks are hyperjumping, hypershooting, no dense vegetation (even on the mayan temple?! ha ha), no ability to toggle crouch (or I haven't found it yet), and no ability to go prone. The control options seem a bit archaic. The skins and building look nice and I can run it with everything cranked fully up!
I keephearing about Day of Defeat and hope the new one based on the HL^2 engine will come out soon!
:p

Hehe...you hit the nail on the head. CS: S is an archaic game. It is basically a 5 year old game, but with modern physics and textures. It is the old Counterstrike with a facelift.

I really gotta make sure no one buys this game unless they have the PCG or IGN rec specs.

DoD is an archaic game, it's a 4 or 5 year old game that's apparently getting a slight facelift. :p
And trust me, CS:S is quite different from CS, take it from someone who played CS for 5 years (and I think CS might actually be closer to 6 years old).

CS is a 5-6 yo game! wow! no wonder most players are awesome shots. With my low twitch-factor rating I'm lucky to get a single kill!
Are there any plans to update Day of Defeat in graphics and gameplay (e.g. toggle prone, toggle crouch, etc)? I'll have to search around for more info!

Yep! If you bought the silver or gold STEAM package, you get DoD: Source free when it comes out. Day of Defeat: Source should be to Day of Defeat like Counterstrike: Source is to Counterstrike... If you didn't buy one of those packages, I don't know how you get it.

darn! only bought the retail version...don't know if it has DoDS..probably not! ha ha
I'm sure Valve will find a way to deliver DoDS to anyone for a few $$$
Do you play Counterstrike source? I'm so slow at the game that I'm a negative affect on the team. Too much running and gunning and I can't find many places to hide that aren't easily found becuaase of the small maps. I hope DoDS will have larger maps and more realism than CsS.

on dial up + time difference = waiting for update w/ bots.
something to add some longevity into the game.
btw...using the uber gravity gun through cheating can cause some issues...like flinging Lamarr across the lab...poor lil headhumper doesn't last too long :D

Yep, I play CS: S...I played it more before HL2 came out though, since then I have been playing HL2...let me know if you want to play sometime - either on the WF IRC, AIM (overclockerintel), or xfire (gobeavs).
Ok...need a little help here. I just fought 2 striders on top of a really battered rooftop, after a while of "Follow Freeman"...it sounded like someone said "Go to the horse!", so I couldn't really understand what he was saying...where do I go?
Ivan Rapkinov
27 Nov 04, 04:37
towards the statue of the Horse - it's on top of a pillar :)
it;s also painful to get to - I remember running around a lot trying to find how to get there :(
there's a bit where you go near where your troops were fighting the Striders, and some Combine soldiers pop up - I think you need to do this for some trigger to engage.
Thanks Ivan! I just beat the game....and wow was it good!
A lot of people disagree, but I loved the ending. Leaves lots of for thought and discussion :D. Can't wait for HL3.
But it leaves to question...who are the combine? And what exactly is there relationship to Dr. Breen?
IIRC Breen had to "negotiate" witht he combine.

Having only played HL2, I can't really say.
there is a 600+ post thread at the Steam forums about peoples postualtions regarding what's happening.
call me a cynic, but I doubt Valve has even bothered thinking that far ahead :D

I only played HL2 also, but I read about he HL1 storyline and stuff....if Valve hasn't thought that far ahead...I'm gonna die.
That means that the 3rd one will be horrible (with no plan, it will be horrible).
I think this is a pretty good guess-

copy that! I can serve as a indicator of enemy presence...when I take a few bullets and die you know the enemy is close! ha ha
And what is up with all the ringers in CSS or is it that they are all just expert shots (probably both! :p )? I will get the jump on them and hit them several times but then I die after only getting hit once or twice...and this is when I'm wearing kevlar and helmet! ha ha
I heard a lot of good things about DoD and I'm looking forward to trying out DoD:S.
btw...I never played HL1. Can someone give me a quick plot summary of HL1? I would like to see how it relates to HL^2.
thanks

There is a lot of cheating on CS: S unfortunatly, which accounts for a lot of the good shots :D.

The second time box down gives a quick summary of HL1, not as good as some others I have read, but I can't find the other ones :D. Don't read too far down if you haven't beaten HL2 yet, as it goes into the ending of it.

thanks for the link. It would have been nice if the game had a bit of background to fill us newbs in on the story...I kept scratching my head and thinking, "What the heck is that alien allied monster doing here? Who are these stormtroopers (combine) and where did they come from? etc. etc."
I did some searching around and if I understand the info correctly is appears that Day of Defeat: Source will costs $10 for all HL^2/Steam users (?? is that right?) and no one is expecting Valve to release DoDS until January.

Now, the combine is a mystery. Everything on that site that isn't noted as being in one of the games is speculation. No one knows who the combine really are and what they are doing.

Wasn't the game about finding out what the Combine is?
Wasn't the game about finding out what the Combine is?
Not really...you were just trying to save the rebel forces from the rule of the combine/Dr. Breen.
The Half-Life series is a trilogy, so hopefully it all will be explained in HL3.

Ok....just played it, and it is really laggy. Hopefully the lag is only because it is the first night, it is really hard to find an open server, there are so many people out there playing. Pings are regularly above 300. I will try again tomarrow, and hopefully it will be resolved. Aside from the lag though, it is pretty cool. Everyone starts with a gravity gun, pistol, and smg. You can pick up the flammable barrels, chuck them, pretty much everything you can do in SP. The most popular map right now is a Nova Prospekt one....
I'm also excited about the SDK....now we can get some awesome mods :D.

I'm 99% sure that will only come from the community, just like with HL. The people that made coop for the first half-life were already mentioned by valve as interested in making coop for this one.
Ok, have been playing HL2DM for a while, and I have to say that HL2 multiplayer is awesome! It boosts the game value by ten-fold! Not only the two maps it came with, but there are community made maps that take advantage of all of the physics, and it is really fun...and it has only been out for a few days! I can't wait for some new, cool mods :D.

Hey guys,
anybody knows a website with an "encyclopedia" for Half-Life 2?
I want to know what they call the different kinds of monstahs, what the names of the levels are (preferrably with screenshots), the names of the major players etc.
Thanks
