View Full Version : Important Scoring Change for Russia at WAR!

I want to propose a change to the tournament scoring for all 3 games. This is based on what I have always felt was an unfair aspect of tournament play in TOAW. Instead of variable turn endings for all of us, I want to insure we are all on the same playing field and have a set turn for the scenarios to end.
...

I would like to arrange the following procedure/rules modifications.

1. Tannenberg ends after the German completes turn 13.
....

This should insure a level playing field for all combatants. If you have any questions or concerns, post them here.

We WILL end each scenario on the anticipated last turn. For Tannenberg that means the scenario is over when the German's complete turn 13.

Once the German completes turn 13 (and has saved the PBL file) he MUST then save the turn as a .SAL file.

The "Official" end game result comes from the German .SAL file. The German player will then send the .SAL and .PBL file to the Russian opponent. (BTW - sending the .PBL file is just insurance to make sure the Russian player can see the last German moves and make sure nothing untoward went on.)

The Russian will open the GERMAN .SAL file from the end of turn 13 and click on "Play - End Scenario". He will be prompted to enter the Russian password. Once this is entered, the scenario ends, asking the Russian player to create a .PBL file. The Russian should save this file, sending it to the German player so he can see the end result also.

Please post any questions, ASAP! Thanks!

[Edit - this post is part of the main round 1 thread. However, I didn't want it overlooked so I've stickied it here as a locked thread.]

So, what do you do with this number???

Well, you guys are my testers for some new tournament software I'm writing!

So go to the tourney homepage (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds), scroll a little more down to the "Rounds". You should see the "Edit Score" beside your name. Click that and follow the directions.

Once you enter your score, the program will automatically re-sort the tourney standings!

NOTE - each player needs to do his own score!

(Ladder admins can edit anyone's score.)

Sorry if I'm asking a late and dumb question :hush:. While I understand (and agree with) the reasoning behind the need for all players to score with a smilar number of turns, what if the scenario ends before turn 13?

Beats me! Did it?

I've never seen a scenario end before the appointed turn (at least those where the designer didn't tweak it - and this scenario has none of those tweaks).

If you mean end early because an opponent surrenders...that is another matter entirely. :D

What if the Russian player eliminates every German unit on the map?

My mistake then, it's just that I thought that with 'scenario variability' on, the game could end somewhat earlier or later than planned. Case closed, apologies for the interference...:D

OK I've saved my final turn as the Germans as a PBL file but now how do I save a SAL file?

If you've already closed out the game ... you can't. However, if the game is still open, when you do close the game you will be prompted to save the file. Or, before you close the game, you can do "File - Save Game As" to save it.

(If you've already closed the game, it won't be a huge deal. Odds are the game will end at the end of turn 13. If it doesn't, we can walk your Russian opponent through ending the game.)

OK so I think I screwed up then. But my game has ended at turn 13.

Cool! Then no problem. You can use the vp points that the end of game file shows you.

Here's a quick question...will the results of the three games be normalized? Or will the points be raw? Seems to me that they should be normalized so that none of the three sets of games are given any undue weighting in the total tournament scoring.

If I missed that part of the tourney rules, please feel free to publicly make feel like a fool... ;)

Excellent question! I don't plan to do that. The scenarios have roughly the same number of objective points:

Tannenberg - 430
Kharkov - 490
Nordic Light - 430
If we had a much larger variance, I might ... but hey ... I'm a busy guy! :p

LoL...I wouldn't want to make you work any harder than you already do for this site. I've never played Nordic Light, and was unaware of how many objective points were in the scenario. Given that there is very little variance (and that Kharkov is one of my stronger games, anyways... ;)) keeping a raw score is fine by me. I just didn't want to be surprised with Nordic Light having some 1000+ points to throw half the weight of the tourney into a scenario that I was unfamiliar with... :whist:
