View Full Version : Round 1 - Russia at WAR!
CyberRanger
30 Oct 04, 23:51
The matches for Round 1 (Tannenberg) are now available. You can see them on the web page (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds) or as a pdf (http://www.warfarehq.com/toaw/russianatwar.pdf). The pdf has the added advantage of games being sorted by each side, making it easier to find your name when you are the Germans.
I few more quick rules before we begin:
1. Upon receiving the game file, each file opened will be the one played. Do not reopen a file as a % chance will exist on units reorganizing, reinforcements arriving, and how air battles turn out.
2. Use undo with great caution. IF you DO use it, you should inform your opponent that you have used it and the reason why. In general, the undo should not give you any advantage over the opponent. Use with utmost caution!
3. Saving a turn, then reloading the save to redo a bad combat round or early turn ending is cheating. Don't do it!
4. Turn Air Staff Assistant OFF before each turn and DO NOT turn it on as it effects both sides. Air units will be handled manually.
5. Be sure you are on ADVANCED RULES and NOT on STANDARD RULES at the beginning of each turn.
6. As soon as you receive a turn, let your opponent know you've received it even if you don't plan to play it immediately. We don't want players waiting days (weeks!) for turns that were lost in the mail.
7. Use the OPART 300 executable (thx Mantis!)
8. Have a helluva great time!

One more item. To find an opponent's email address, click on his name on the player list (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds).

Hello,
I think I might misunderstand the layout of the tourney.
Am I playing 4 matches the first round?
I knew that pdf would cause confusion. No, you are playing two games. The two columns are the same just sorted differently to help you find your name when you are the Germans or the Russians.
So in this match, you are Russian: Bdr.Mallette Cesar
In this one, you are German: JoeBob Bdr.Mallette (yeah, it sucks ... good luck!)
Additionally - play the games using the OPART 300 executable, gentlemen.
A little confusion
Here(http://www.warfarehq.com/toaw/russianatwar.pdf)it states that im going to play foggy as russian and evil_adder as german.

I have only one match registered here: (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds)

You are the Russians vs Foggy and the Germans vs Evil_adder. In the evil_adder vs foggy match, I made a mistake! It should have been Djarnis (Russian) vs Foggy (German). The pdf IS correct and I've fixed the web page. (That's what I get for doing the web page at midnight!)
On the web page (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds), the Russians are always listed first. I've added another set of column headers to help make the pdf clearer (http://www.warfarehq.com/toaw/russianatwar.pdf).

To my opponents: for the tourney I attach a short price list:
Disbanding of Russian infantry divisions:
Normal front rate: 5 USD
Opponent panic decision rate: 8 USD
Using Russian artillery units as scouts and leaving them well forward, ripe for destruction: 10 USD
Total surrender of Russian forces: 50 USD, or two cases of Bitburger Pils.
Above prices can be subject to alterations. Typical factors affecting prices: Rough terrain +10%, Good Supply +15%, previous deliveries of two cases of Bitburger Pils -50% at least, abundant numbers of hot chicks calling and distracting me -95% (heavy rebate due to low probability!) ;)
BlackRider, I'll send you my first turn asap, good luck to everyone, and thanks to WestPointer!

I want to propose a change to the tournament scoring for all 3 games. This is based on what I have always felt was an unfair aspect of tournament play in TOAW. Instead of variable turn endings for all of us, I want to insure we are all on the same playing field and have a set turn for the scenarios to end.
Tannenberg is supposed to end on turn 13. HOWEVER, it could go longer. When we are all supposed to be competing against a broad field, this could give some people an undue advantage with extra time. It would be like spotting some Olympic swimmers an extra second or two randomly. :D
I would like to arrange the following procedure/rules modifications.
1. Tannenberg ends after the German completes turn 13.
2. If the game does not end after German turn 13, send file to Russian player, who will then score the game after opening his turn [without moving any units]
This should insure a level playing field for all combatants. If you have any questions or concerns, post them here.

After we discussed this earlier today, I wondered if this would still be the same as true turn 13 ending. If the Russian opens turn 14, will the bookkeeping phase (replacements) change the score from what a real turn 13 ending would have been?

We WILL end each scenario on the anticipated last turn. For Tannenberg that means the scenario is over when the German's complete turn 13.
Once the German completes turn 13 (and has saved the PBL file) he MUST then save the turn as a .SAL file.
The "Official" end game result comes from the German .SAL file. The German player will then send the .SAL and .PBL file to the Russian opponent. (BTW - sending the .PBL file is just insurance to make sure the Russian player can see the last German moves and make sure nothing untoward went on.)
The Russian will open the GERMAN .SAL file from the end of turn 13 and click on "Play - End Scenario". He will be prompted to enter the Russian password. Once this is entered, the scenario ends, asking the Russian player to create a .PBL file. The Russian should save this file, sending it to the German player so he can see the end result also.
Please post any questions, ASAP! Thanks!

The Russians have fairly limited offensive capabilities, especially in the front end of the game. I had a couple key brigades evaporate in their first engagements, which unhinged my entire defense. Any thoughts of striking back at the advancing Germans went right into the toilet.
Once the German completes turn 13 (and has saved the PBL file) he MUST then save the turn as a .SAL file.

...Now, tell me...how the *bleep* were you able to keep your Germans in almost complete supply? Most of your Northern units dont' even look like they were a part of the battle! They are 100% supply.
By the end of turn 4, I controlled Gumbinnen, Stalluponen (both in the north), and Suvalki (in the center). That satisfied my goals for that portion of the battlefield. I made my lines as staight as possible to prevent flanking attacks against it, then dug-in. My opponent didn't really try to break my lines, hence the high supply levels of those troops. I think the pressure I put on him in the south caused him to send more troops down there instead of trying to break me in the north.

my game with the german is over with a marginal victory for me
given the difficulty for the russians in this scenario i think my opponent did quite a good job. I could have taken sulvaki on the last turn if i had not push the number of rounds too far but result would have been somewhat too severe, i think a marginal victory for me mirror what happened during the game.

Silly soldier ... you scored your Kharhov game too! I changed that score back to zero, so now you are showing just 137 as your total points (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds) (for your Tannenberg game.)
BTW - one nice feature of the system is that you can go back and change your score if you make an error.

Looks like Triaxe and I will finish up before I go to Thailand tonight. We bounced 4 turns each Fri night and Saturday. Only one more to go. No contact with Satisfaction for 5 days. We are on turn 4 I recall. I'll be back on the 1st Dec.
I have an idea for how to handle drop outs. First: drop outs are out of the tourney with OD in that game. Next their opponents score an overwhelming victory for the ladder and some bonus points for the tourney but are re-paired with another guy in the same situation in order to get complete game scores. (and of course get credit for the new game as well.)
Back and running with turns 6 and 7 out to my opponents.
My game with Tiberius is over and what a great battle. At first it was push, push, push and then it was run, run, run, for me as the Russians. In the end he was sitting right next to 110 victory points and took some heavy losses on his last turn but the end of game saved me. Final point total for me as Russians was -66. Good game Tiberius!

Hi Pierre - message received. I apologize for the delay but I wanted to make sure all was in order before posting... here it is:
Mkqest has ask to be removed from the tournament.
In Round 1, Viridomaros (as the Russians) will now play bulldozer.
In Round 2, WestPointer (as the Soviets) will now play Mompariglia.
Complete matches available at the tourney home page (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds).
To my opponents: Sorry for the long delay in getting the turns back to you but after a CPU/MB upgrade I've had to reinstall XP (thanks to a nifty XP "feature") and my game time has been spent getting things back in order. It should be business as usual by Sunday.

Along with updating your score, make sure that the game gets reported to WARS. There a few games where looking at the score I think the game is complete but there is no WARS report.
I've added a new feature to the tourney page where the match is linked to the WARS report. Check it out (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#1)! Currently, I link the two once the WARS report is completed ... but soon it will be automagic! :p
(For ladder admins - be sure to try it with admin tools not displaying to see the page without so many extra links.)
