Ok hands up if you have actually not seen a best game, or worst game thread :)

You there put your hand down.

I want to see what you guys think are games that did what they did in such a way that both a hard core grognard or a complete novice could enjoy it.

I have seen lots of games that might have been "best game" candidates or "worst game" candidates, but in the end, some guys actually think some games are great while others not.

Since I have been playing computer games, only one game really has mastered that hard to achieve category of easy enough for a novice, hard enough for a pro quality ... at the same time.

That game is Strategic Command.

Yes bet you are surprised this isn't a thread about Steel Panthers hehe.

The first day I played it, I read not one single instruction.
The interface is so obvious you couldn't possible not figure it out. Well I hope that didn't leave anyone out :)

I was able to enjoy the game 5 seconds after beginning.
I was able to bash my way through an introductory game on base setting and not experience any difficulty in actually knowing what I was basically trying to do.

Now that is not to say I was all that great that game hehe.

After all this time, I have learned a lot of elements to the game. But there is usually something more.

A real hardcore player can make it obvious you are toast in about 5 turns on average.
Yet, a newcomer can get in a great game as well, playing another newcomer or playing the AI.

There was some buzz surrounding file security, but hmm so what.
I think the game is grand played hotseat against local buddies who want a good game, but no one has the dedicated gaming room.
Say good bye to troubles playing games like Advanced Third Reich or any other room eater.

And all this served up with a price tag that is so low you wonder what happened. I can't recall a game of any real fvalue ever being sold new at this low a price actually.

And wait, there's more, this game is due to be matched by a more savvy version of itself real soon.

I love a lot of games for many reasons, but I can't actually think of a game more suitable for the title of "best of all world's" winner.

I'd nominate 'Highway to the Reich' because it can be played in so many ways. The interface is intuitive, you can leave the AI in control of as much or as little as you like, the scenarios vary in length and size and it's in real time so there's no need to worry about 'phases' or 'impulses' or 'initiative' etc. etc. If you're a hard-core grognard there's plenty there too, it's historically accurate, you can micro-manage as much as you like, the enemy AI is as strong as any game around (although not as good as another human) and there are plenty of options to vary the scenarios available.

I rest my case m'lud :smoke:

Ditto on HTTR, and Tacops is another in that category.
