This is the official enrollment thread for the Russia at WAR! tournament. If you want to play in the tournament, first read the rules (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1). If you still want to play (and I hope you do!), sign-up via the poll.
Note - if you do not want to play ... no need to indicate that here. I just had to have two questions for the poll to work!
Sign-up will end on OCT 30. The tournament begins on Nov 1.
Good gaming ... this one will be fun!!!!
I signed up, but have a general question for the admins.
What is the recent infatuation with screwing with the regular TOAW scoring regime all about? In other words, why have the last couple of tournaments negated the negative effect of the opposing player's holding of objectives in the scoring of a players points? What is the point?
Well, OK you made it, you made me join!!!
I just hope that I don't have to play to many battles a week... :)
I'm in although I'm a rookie at this.

I am in and looking forward to November 1st.

Okay...fair enough. I was just wondering why the need to fix something that didn't seem to be broken.

What IS being in this club without being in an ongoing tournament???......I'm in!!!.....Thanks for getting this going.....But, I was surprised at the non-mention of tournament rules as per NO cheating......Shouldn't it be mentioned:
Basic Rules: (these should not need to be mentioned)
1...Upon receiving the game file, each file opened will be the one played. Do not reopen a file as a % chance will exist on units reorganizing and players reinforcements.
2...Do not use undo. All moves made will be the moves played.
3...Whether the turn end good, bad or early,........ close. zip and send.
4...Turn Air Staff Assistant OFF before each turn and DO NOT turn it on as it effects both sides. Air units will be handled manually.
5...Be sure you are on ADVANCED RULES and NOT on STANDARD RULES at the beginning of each turn.
6...Basically.... Earn your wins and losses as a person of integrity by playing fair.
Let me know if I am over the bounds on this..........

Ugh!
I just signed myself up to play as the russians for 8 months....
I still want to finish my Operation roundup with TigerSqn!
Will he return by then? Can I hold out that long till I post an OV like he suggested! Time will tell. I have a 3-5 day turnaround including about an hour of final study before movement!!!lol, each combat turn, sheesh.
You realize this tournament is asking a lot of people.
110% right?

There was some feedback on that in the WitW tournament as I recall and it was deemed that the best way to do it was to score by actual scenario score + or -, but that it wasn't going to go that way for that tourney because it had been pre-arranged to go the other way. I lend my backing to going by actual TOAW score differential as reported in the scenario situation briefing. The only thing we might want to do is add a multiplier per scenario to even out their weighting. THis has the advantages that players will have to fight for what the scenario designer intended them to fight for and also retains a broad range of results by points rather than the few categories of OV, SV, MV, etc.
2...Do not use undo. All moves made will be the moves played.
Let me know if I am over the bounds on this..........[/QUOTE]
I'm in!!!
Regarding the above commment, I think in the larger scenarios "undos" are the result of mousing errors, and aren't a big deal. As long as there is no recon or some other "benefit" involved, it doesn't bother me if it only happens once or twice.
The solution is to SAVE often when moving your units.
Basically, it's a gentleman's rule, and one I could probably agree to, but not impose on another player.
"Save and Reloads" however, to improve combat results, is of course outright cheating. If people want to play at that level, why bother to even play? Rolling the dice is part of the fun!

Well ... at the risk of being called a flip-flopper, I'm going to change the scoring scheme. We will use the +/- score given by the game (the differential.) It's a heck of a lot easier to figure out if nothing else. When it comes to awarding bonus ladder points ... I'll figure something out, but the tourney winner will receive a total of 200 bonus pts while each person who completes the tourney will receive a minimum of 30 bonus ladder points. (I'll get the web page updated asap.)

I agree that these are rules that we should all follow. My only expection is in line with JoeBob's: a mad mouse un-do doesn't concern me at all. However, for the sake of the tournament, an explicit statement against un-do's would prevent any misunderstandings or judgement calls. Thoughts?

There's nothing wrong with flip-flopping, so long as you flip to a right choice from one that is a flop... ;)
If you'd like to keep the numbers positive for the score weighting for bonus point allocations, simply use the lowest aggregate score as the baseline, and add the absolute value of its difference from zero to all the other players scores. That would be easy enough to do in the spreadsheet that you will undoubtedly be using for tracking the game results.
I think that simply reporting the stated differential that TOAW gives on the final turn will be a lot more foolproof than having three dozen players come up with a variety of miscalculations and confused reports.
Count 85 kg of cannonfodder in.

<!-- nitpicking mode on -->
Just to be sure: scores to be registered are those at the actual end of games, whatever the 'official' turns number might be - or not? For instance, Kharkov 42 is supposed to last 14 turns but may last longer, or end earlier in some cases, giving thus more or less opportunities to grab (or lose) VP rich locations. It's perfectly fine by me and that's how I spontaneously understand it but I'd rather ask now (and probably throw in some measure of confusion ;))...
Also, will every additional turn have to be squeezed within the official timeline? Again, it's all right for me but perhaps this last point ought to be dealt on a case by case basis though.

I agree an explicit statement against un-do's would prevent any misunderstandings or judgement calls. I for one believe most reasons for "mad-mouse" undos are what I would call "wrong". Such as:
Disengaging a unit that happens to evaporate....undo, try again
Moving a unit down road that comes upon hidden enemy...undo, try new way
Moving to recon location that remains observed not spotted...undo, try again
Moving unit gets interdicted then goes to retreated mode...undo, try again
(I could go on....)
Reasons for using undo:
Cat & dog fight that occurs atop keyboard
Drunken laziness
Earthquake makes hand shake
Still using original 1970's version "mouse"
(IS there a good reason for this???)

But ewho hinders anyone to just save and reload? (Well, except honour)
If one really has made mistake in movement such as moving a group of units and not one (what happens quite often for me in scenarious with large numbers of units) one might undo and then send the opponent the reason for doing so, if it does not happen to often.

Along with Nemo's "live with your mistakes", I would also suggest practicing with smaller scenarios, moving 1 unit located within a stack one at a time.........I believe the practicing should not take longer than a 30 seconds or so..........

I will be out of the country Nov. 15 - Dec. 1 and again Feb. 1 -Feb. 15. I will TRY to maintain web and game contact but there are no guarantees for that period. I don't foresee it being a problem to completeing my games unless my opponent is SLOW.
Regarding "undos", if I'm on the road using the absolutely crappy company laptop, with scratched up screen and dim resolution, I can virtually guarantee there might be a chance of screwing up a move (badly - like a stack of crucial units) but without gaining ANY advantage over the opponent, such as recon, AV, etc. If that happened to me I'd submit the move and explain the undo.
It's happened in previous tourney games, and I never complained about any undos by any opponents, because they were simple mistakes with no gain in advantage.
If everybody plays with honor and integrity, the games will be great. Cheaters expose themselves over time.

Well, the WitW tourney was like this, but it was the first tourney to do it, and the format came out of that 'round table' chat that we had based on majority votes.
This one is Brent's baby, and I know he spent a decent bit of time pondering the formula. He can field this part of it better than I can!

Tannenberg 1914--> which version
Karkhov 42 --> Revised scenario or original???
Nordic Light 1.1 ?? --> or newer version
Are there any quirks with these scenarios that are gonna phuck anything up?
I realize, some people are already testing these scenarios, getting ready for tournament, finding the best places to attack, finding out which units are their strongest and when certain events happen and chit like that. I guess, I would like to know for sure which version of each scenario we are using.
I am not an 'EvilEd checker outer' so that doesn't worry me, just wondering about ANY bugs at all, even the smallest.

I've started my first game of N.L.; it is really a nice piece of work. I was not able to locate a "docs" file with the scenario. In view of the "event" dependant replacements, it would be nice to have an idea of what areas need to be targeted for capture w/o having to read the editor.

Many, many of the questions being ask here can be found at the tournament home page (http://www.warfarehq.com/index.php?page=./toaw/russianatwar.html).
Reasons for using undo:
(IS there a good reason for this???)
German keyboard, having the Unit info right next zo Z-Undo key, resulting in an accidental undo even if totally unintended.
Wanting to move a single unit and instead moving an entire stack etc,.
If you want to cheat using the recon/undo method it would be so much easier to use one of the well known exploits to view the entire opposing force or, if you don't know how to do that, recon undo all you want and than simply reload you last SAV and continue from there on.
If sombody wanted to use UNDO to cheat he could do so without you ever recognizing it, I think we all here only use UNDO in case we made a human error AKA two left hands, so having a few undos in a turn shouldn't concern anybody really.
Live with your mistakes and learn from them - once you've screwed your plans this way once or twice, I guarantee you'll acquire extra mouse sensitivity (first hand knowledge) :D
TOAW is an operational wargame, could you honestly think of a situation were a general wants to move a division, accidently said 'move that army' and than was unable to correct his hmistake even if he immediately noticed it because his adjudant refuses to take the corrected order and instead carried out the original order regardless ? :D
Rule of thumb: if you wnated to move just one unit but accidently clickt on 'entire group' you should be able to undo it,
if you intended to move the entire group but hit some unexpected opposition on your advance you should NOT use undo. As this rule can't be enforced we have to trust our opponent to play with honor.

Hey, such an adjudant should get a promotion :)
That said, the no-undo is a rule I apply to myself to keep the fuss at a minimum and that, by all means, I don't intend to enforce on my opponents (anyway, I play without sound and usually fall half-asleep during replays :p). I've seen undos very rarely and never bothered my opponents with questions about them.
I understand your reasons and agree with the principles they embody - it's just that, the undo being a sensitive issue, I refrain from using this feature, thus saving me the hassle to explain why I would have had to use it and at the same time improving my mouse and keyboard skills. Hence my piece of advice to Mr Clark...

From Mantis' message in WinW, I don't think they've joined the ladder yet. I'll "join" them today then send out another email to the ladder. However, I know from Wintergewitter that Raver was dropping games due to RL concerns.

Hi there i received your notification about joining the TOAW tournament so you can enter me into it if this is the way to do it.Let me know if this is not right thanks.
Even better than a soviet-style election : 100% yes, not a single no :smoke:

Simply vote in the poll at the top of the page, and that will enter you into the tourney!
Oh, Brent - Do the people you entered into the ladder need the bonus points awarded?
Also, gents, sorry to disappoint, but I won't be able to participate in the tourney. Time issues are too tight at the moment, so I'd not be able to keep up. :nervous:

Sorry, you've already answered "Yes" and must play! (I removed your name from the poll. )
51 sign-ups until now. A quick search in W.A.R.S. shows that the figure amounts to 50% of the players active during the last 6 months... not bad.

Well, I have not yet finished my first game so I am definately not active ;)

Yes, it's an excellent turnout. AND it's actually 52. Somehow in editing the poll as a few people withdrew I messed up the count.

I signed up as Eric Weider but my TOAW username is keef. Sorry about that. Should i sign up again as keef?
I signed you up as Keef since your games are all listed under that name. Do you want to keep it that way? Or, would you rather merge Keef in Eric Weider?
Well, I have not yet finished my first game so I am definately not active ;)
We're almost finished, Felix. You'll soon no longer be a virgin... ;)

They would be less suitable for the younger viewers, than my usual fare. Thus, I must decline... :p

A listing of current players is here (http://www.war-forums.com/forums/wfhq-ld-tourney-details.php?id=1#rounds). Please ensure that if you've signed up (or think you've signed up!) that your name appears on the list.
Matches will be posted by 12 noon, EST, Monday (Nov 1).
Excellent thing to have the player's list linked to their W.A.R.S. profile - that way we'll know right away who and what we're up to when the pairings are done.

nemo, get some sleep before the tourney starts... ;)TOAW wise, I usually reach maximum proficiency after a couple of sleepless weeks... :)
Or perhaps do you think I should refrain from posting all over the place :D

For those on the fence, these are all scenarios that play pretty fast and shouldn't consume inordinate amounts of your time. Nordic light is a bit more involved, BUT you won't have to worry about that until next spring! By then the new guys will all be experts.
Just a quick round of applause for WestPointer and whoever else is involved in setting up this tourney (like the scenario designers!)
You guys are doing an awesome job! Really impressed with how everything is nicely linked. Downloaded the scenarios in a jiff, and got the touney rules in the process.
VERY impressive list of players. This will be a trendsetter for sure...
Game ON! :jack:
Hey Laszlo glad you signed up! Wouldn't be right for the Hungarians to be left out of such an important international event! Too bad they don't have a "smilie" for somebody eating pizza... Maybe if Laszlo manages to win the tourney we should chip in, and have some of the best local Hungarian pizza delvered to him! (L's choice of course!)
Well I guess my wounds are healed from the last TOAW Tourney I entered here and I'm a glutton for punishment so I've signed up.:)

Welcome aboard! I've added you to the list.
Thanks for the email. I haven't played for over a year, so it's about time. Please put my name on the list.

I know. I've been watching the ladder, and waiting for you to get those last few points necessary to cross over into the Officers Club. I've had a very special lady picked out for you, on that occasion, for a long time...
