finally in playing random (DCG) campaign games, I met a visibility 1 scenario, very interesting actually. What is the trick there? hmmm.... I stopped at the beginning and am still thinking about this very special case of setting, how to attack and defend in a state of almost blind? :) very interesting, any ideas?

Ahhh night... brilliant stuff.
Are you playing EF2? If so.. are you using the 1.03 version or 1.02?
If you are using the 1.03 version, would you happen to notice if you have Star Shells? If so... these are great!!!!!
If you're using the 1.02 version, unfortunately Star Shells aren't an option... so you'll have to do things the old fashioned way... set out pickets and probe. Be thankful you're playing the AI as opposed to a skilled opponent. :)
Hope all is well
Take care and good luck

I am using EFII from W@W, is that 1.03 or 1.02? But since I never saw any "star shells", I doubt it is 1.02. :(
But wouldn't that be fun? Star shells :) How are they showed in the system? Just like smoke? You have certain number in stock and then use them with artillery? Can engineers do that as well? It is all that cool to have this ability ---- and extremely powerful I guess ---- how does it work though? Once illuminated, the hexes would be visible to all units or still certain hexes within a certain range? (of course, terrain effects are always there for sure.)
In my case, it was not "night", it was Heavy Fog. So I guess even the star shell would not help in this case (and in reality). Right before this scenario, I played one with visibility 6, the AI got a quite embarassing result of being totally wiped out while at the same time inflicted 0 casualty on me :D That is one thing I liked to play with AI, I kept getting Iron Crosses all the way, with diamond and swords sometimes :D but never with a human player ;)

Ahh.. W@W... then yes, it's 1.03. So then, you might have starshells available!!
If so, they will be displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
If you have them, most artillery (if not all?) can fire them. I believe the method for doing so is holding down SHIFT + ALT while plotting artillery.
What happens is that the Star Shell will light up a hex, and the hexes surrounding that hex for one turn. If you have enough of them they are great for watching avenues of approaches.
Units in a Star Shell hex will be fired upon with the full blunt of the weapons, as opposed to a reduction in firepower due to the inability to see clearly.
Hit a road with a Star Shell a few clicks away, but still in LOS for your tanks, catch any trucks laden with infantry, it's open season. :) I'm not sure the max viewing distance for LOS for units viewing... trial and error should come up with an answer though.
Engineers cannot use Star Shells, as far as I know. :)
Think positive.. it will all be fine..
Take care and good luck

I'm not sure how EF Star shells work, cause I haven't played that one yet. But in RS, pretty well anyone can fire a star shell. They can only be fired 2 hex's away by a non-artillery unit. You cannot plot a star shell for the beginning of your next turn with your indirect fire either. Star shells are not very accurate when using a non-artillery unit. It is best to have a leader in the hex where you are firing from. Just remember... the hex and each hex attahed to the hex you light up, stay lit up till your next turn.
A good stratagy I like to use is, have a disrupted unit with a leader fire the star shell. Sometimes you can use up a units complete action points and never get the shell off. That sucks...but it happens.
I hope I have shed a litlle light(no pun intended:cheeky: ) on the subject.
Cheers,

thank you Ray :)
Actually unfortunately, I haven't met any "star shells" yet. I guess that is because all my missions were during the day time ---- even with visibility 1, it was still in day time, only with heavy fog. So I never see any "star shell" icon on my screen either. ;p
But this definitely helps and it is interesting to have something to expect ---- night mission and star shells in the future :)
(but strange enough, I have played more than 40 scenarios, still not even one of them involves night missions ;p )
