Anybody still playing this game? Someone recommended it to me in another thread, so I downloaded it and gave it a try.
Just made my way through all the tutorials, and now that I kinda know what I'm doing, it's a pretty great game.
I remember getting a free copy of SP years ago, on a CD with Panzer General or something. Back then I fooled around with it briefly but couldn't figure out what was happening, so I gave it up as a poorly designed game.
I'm surprised to see that so much work has been done on it in the intervening years--and that it's still free!
Brings back fond memories of my SL/ASL days.

Oh, yea, it's still played around here.
I just started The Final Fortress (easy version) a couple of days ago. Gonna have to finish it off before I get to reviewing Crusader Kings which just arrived.

I like playing the long campaign from 39-48 as the Germans. Once the Germans get Tigers it gets rather boring since the enemy uses the same rush tactics all the time and a good crew in the Tiger can get 1800-2000 meter kills. Still a fun game to pass the time away.

Try playing that against the Russians. It's hard.
Its one of the games that runs near perfectly on linux with some emulation programs, so I reckon I will get to like it...(I love linux)

There are several clubs with ladders for Steel Panthers. You can find one at the Blitzkrieg Wargaming Club (http://www.theblitz.org/) or at Warfare HQ (http://www.warfarehq.com/news.shtml) . Both have active forums dedicated to the game. You can also go to theSPWAW Depot (http://spwaw.com/) and find opponents and tons of information. Matrix Games also has an active forum for the game. I always have one or two PBEM games going on.

I play the long campaign against the US, Britain, and the USSR. All you really need is a section of 88's and some good placement. I use an Infantry coy., Panzer plt., SPAA Sec., 88 Sec, and an Eng Plt as a core force. By 42' it's a pretty formidable force with most of the armor having 40-50+ kills and the 88's into the 60's.
