Helicopters can be a strong asset in Battlefield Vietnam, when they are used correctly. Learning to fly these machines is pretty easy but still takes time and practice. But please, practice flying in single-player before you go online. I can assure you that the rest of your teammates will not look upon too fondly when you take four or five of them down with you shortly after takeoff.
Basic Flying Tips:
(The controls are all in their default setting)
Once you get the hang of it, flying a helicopter is as easy as driving a tank. When you enter the helicopter, hold down W to take off and gently press the up arrow to start moving forward. One thing about flying Helicopters that’s different from flying planes is that you don’t need to hold the “speed up” key (W) in order to stay airborne. When you have reached your destination and want to hover over it, level out, and use W and D to gain the right altitude. Once you are there, let go of W, and use the A and D keys to turn left and right.
Dropping Off Troops:
When it comes time to unload the troops over or near an enemy position, I wouldn’t recommend hovering two feet above the ground and letting them walk out. By doing this, you are making yourself a clear target for RPG’s, AK47’s, Tanks, and pretty much everything else the enemy has on the ground. The best way to unload soldiers is to hover high above the enemy position, and let them parachute out (if you are a soldier parachuting out, make sure you don’t open your parachute until the very last moment, or else you’ll be a very easy target for the enemy). This way, you’re out of range of most ground weapons and you don’t have to worry about finding a good landing spot.
Attacking:
Learning to attack with a helicopter should come pretty naturally once you have learned to fly. There are several methods you can choose from such as flying slowly over the target and shooting with accuracy, or making a quick pass and hitting whatever you can. You decide which is best for you.
Shooting Down a Helicopter:
I tend to prefer using anti-tank weapons to shoot down enemy helicopters, especially the RPG. The best time to attack is when the enemy chopper is low to the ground and moving slowly or hovering.
If you have any other tips you would like to add, be sure to post them.
