View Full Version : Anyone for DNO??
Deep breath …. I think I would like to play a game of Daniel McBride's Drang nach Osten as the Germans. I've never played DNO before, but have started a game of its twin: Gotterdammerung, and am managing a steady 2 turns per week.
Is anyone interested?
I'd love to. Send me the first turn, whenever you are ready.

Bugger :) I had a feeling it might be you who replied ... dont ask me why. I think this might be real bad for my self esteem but OK lets do it. Just give me a day or so to say goodbye to my wife and quit my job :D
Take your time...no need to lose them, too.;)

hehe... sounds like pretty serious here now :alien: :alien:
Do not you guys need some body bags as well?
I have plenty for sale: $20 each, how many d'ya need? 1 million, 2? Come on!
Oh, in case, you change your mind, here are banners for sale as well: $5 each, and as a special, every 10 purchase of body bags gets 1 banner absolutely FREE! --- hey, you cannot go wrong with such a deal!
(esp. in DNO --- hohoho... :D)
From my DNO experiences I'd suggest the following unconventional houserule: That the axis can continue the turn even after a failed proficiency check ends the turn early. In the newest DNO the german shock was reduced to 100% so early turn endings will happen and the scenario depends so insensly on the first good german 20-30 turns that even a single early turn ending can bring the entrire Blitzkrieg down to WW1-trench war.
I'm happy to start one too - as either side. :D
Any takers ?

Everyone should take a deep breath before embarking on those scenarios...aaaiiiiyeeeee they're big.
*Several deep breaths*
I'll throw my name in the ring for a game of Goetterdammerung. I've played through the first five turns on my own just to get the feel for the game, but I've never even come close to playing a scenario this big before. I've done some recent reading on the Soviet's 44-45 offensive, so I would kinda like to do that side.
I really don't mind the skill level of my opponent, but be forewarned--it will probably look like I'm lost, confused and overwhelmed.
I can do one to two turns a week, working on it a little everyday. I also plan to write an AAR of some level of detail...this will help keep my interest.
Takers?

I'm currently playing one as Russia - I don't fancy starting another of these just at the moment, but soon, soon ....
How fast is your machine ? Mine is about 3 years old, and takes about half an hour at the start of every turn on supplies etc. I make sure I save the game as soon as I get past the calculations !

My machine is about 3 years old as well--550mhz P3, or something like that.
I'd say it takes around 10-15 minutes to get past the calculations...I usually keep a book at the desk and read between turns. Now reading Michael Oren's book on the six days war.
My impression is that DNO takes longer.
The bookkeeping phase in DnO does take longer than in GiO.
Mine's a 450 P3 I think - perhaps it only seems like 30 minutes with a wife and kids waiting to get on the machine as well ...

Mine's an athlon 1470. It takes roughly 5 mins to generate those scenarios. I was generally doing something else though when I played with them so unless I noticed the mouse cursor being yanked to the center of the screen I didn't notice the gen until somewhat after it'd completed.

hi guys, i also noticed that some maps or scenarios take more time in the calculation phase, i have an athlon xp 2000 512 ddr ram
usually the calculation phase is really fast about one or two min
but some scenario are taking about 7-8 mins
i just don't understand that because acow is not really a "big" game but i have noticed it use a lot of ram memory i don't know how it's possible with a game of this kind
may be too much operations in the same time

it's calculating the supply levels, espeially when hte map is very big, or the supply radius very high. Pathfinding blows up massively without pruning, and since pruning results in suboptimal results (see rail movement) for the supply phase the entire tree is generated which is a very processor intensive function.
