View Full Version : use of AA guns
In the Crete 41 scenario commonwealth forces have got a couple of AA guns around the Suda Bay area.
As this equipment moves very slowly and the scenario only lasts for about 8 turns, I suppose you don't have to move them around a lot.
So how can you use them in your defense?
I did some test droppings and checked the air briefing every turn but nothing seems to happen.

This discussion was had before somewhere here.AA is almost useless in the game sad to say.Almost like AAA.
LoL John Paul, but Bobos, being from Belgium, is unlikely to know anything of your travails with AAA...
Bobos, just use the AA however you can. The game engine downplays its historical role. Even supposedly ranged AA in scenarios has no effect in attacks on hexes, other than its own (while as defender), or in adjacent hexes, and then only while actively attacking. Generally its most effective use ends up being that of a "light artillery" used in direct fire limited attacks in conjunction with real artillery support and ground troops (think big gatling guns, here) or to stiffen the defense of hexes. Your mileage, not to mention historic sensibilities, may vary...

yes I have to agree with the above observations.
Indeed, some long time ago, I read a book about the infamous 88mm in WWII, which said it was a surprise that the german found out this monster was even better used as an AT gun. ... And later when I played ACOW, I soon found out, much more to my own surprise, all those AA's in ACOW were better off used as either AT guns or AP guns. :D
I think this is a bug. (as a result, those SA missiles, in most cases (or in all cases that I saw), are totally irrelavant to the game at all. Because they cannot be used as AT or AP guns ;p ) Yet remember, this is an "army game" anyway
O.K.
AA guns on the road to Canea.
Hope they will get there in time.

Does that mean those that are sited on airfields are no good in protecting aircraft on the airfield from air strikes then?

Yes...for all practical purposes..:cheeky:
Not true! If there are 2000 planes in the raid, you might kill 137 instead of 136!
