Now obviously BF1942 is not exactly flight simulator material, but it still requires you to have some skill to be able to fly the planes. Therefore, use this thread to post any strategies you may have that can help others become better pilots.
flying is flying, I enjoy flying upside down in fighters though, scares the crap out of newbies, double points for successfully bombing something.

How in the hell do you fly those?? :(
This may be just me, but I find controlling elevator (up/down) and ailerons (roll) with the mouse to hard, I use a trackball. So I put the mouse to the elevator and rudder (yaw/sideways) and have the keyboard do ailerons. This helps me a lot with keyboard and mouse flying.
I've got optical and I find flying a piece of cake, but I've had alot of practice.

Thanks gobeavs, I'll try that. I too use a trackball, and have since like '97. Only way to game, I say.
Exactly the same way with me. Why move your whole arm franticly around when you can just give a little flick of the thumb? Unfortunatly, the kind we use, the old logitech ones, they are hard to find...
BTW Jim- I don't want to pester you with it in case you have recieved it, but did you get my e-mail? My ISP has all sorts of SPAM filters and stuff so I never know if someone has not replied yet, is ignoring me, or if it got SPAM filtered...
the thing with using key's to control turning instead of the mouse is that it takes a lot longer. For me, I use the mouse for large maneuverings, like turning around, and I use the keys for fine maneuverings, like adjusting my aim a little in my straifing run.
As for helocopters, I think the only way to use them for their full potential, ie drifting sideways while still aiming at the same thing, is with practice and a joystick.
With the keys for turning, I just use the keyboard and turn myself 90 degrees, then go up on the mouse. Really quick turning. As for the helicopter, I can fly those with a keyboard and mouse also, just a little practice.
Why can't we just use a joystick!!:(
That works also, mines just really touchy so I try to avoid using it.
Bleh... flying with the BF1942 engine is horrible. Granted, I'm into Falcon 4.0 SP4 and the like, but I certainly hope they make the flight physics better in BF2.
As for helicopters (which are certainly better than fixed-wing aircraft in the game) I use a simple four-button stick with a throttle. The trigger and center thumb buttons are for weapons, the left and right thumb buttons are for tail rotor. This seems to work out pretty well.
