Do any of you submit forfeits to the ladder?

And under what circumstances? The particular case that I have is an opponent that just stopped sending me turns--since about mid-Novemeber. Twice I've tried to resume contact, but still no turn. I know that they are still around because they keep posting on the forums.

I know that my turns per week can be slow (especially lately :(), but there are limits to reason

I'd say that if they don't even have the courtesy to lead you on with some tale of woe and grief, then give up on getting anything from them and report the game as an OV for yourself based on turns played.

I usually don't report matches when players disappear. I've had quite a few of these.

When you say forfeit do you mean your opponent told you they have given up or that they just disappear?

Forfeit isn't really the right word. They don't say that they give up; they just disappear (in terms of sending you turns or replying to your e-mails)--yet they remain strangely active on the forums.

Did you send them another email? Maybe you should post a message on the forum. It could be your email address is getting blocked.

Okay Chuck! I can no longer handle the agony! You've teased a confession out of me: Cheetah722 where is my turn of Tannenberg 14?!?!?

If I were you, I'd not waste any more time and report the game. Bruce had to do the same, in his second round game of the OPFOR tourney against him. Looks like he's abandoned active play, in spite of his presence in other sections of the forum.

Seconded. File it under OV.

I've had more people abandon games on me... I don't mind quite so much when they just go POOF!, and are never seen or heard from again; but when they are still obviously 'around', and are just ignoring me, or only left because they were taking a serious beating, well then that pisses me off right royally.

To date, I have over a dozen abandoned games, and I've not reported a one. But I'm starting to get a bit more fussy about it. (I could be catching up to Brian and James otherwise!)

I think I am going to look at how to denote forfeit victories on the ladder so people know the players who have forfeits against them. If a player just drops out of sight and gives no indication of why, he obviously has no intention of being an active player on the ladder. OTOH players are more than welcome to work out terms with their opponents if they feel outmatched. I have accepted concessions from opponents and taken SV's instead of OV's just because I appreciated that they wanted to save everyone's time and energy. I don't mind the points, but it's not the end-all of why I play here.

So new players take note, you only learn by playing the good players, and you learn best by actively participating, asking questions, and enjoying the game even in defeats. Most people on the ladder are more than willing to help you improve your game play if you just ask.

No need to feel shamed into just ignoring players. It is after all, just a game!

try to get their msn address because sometimes your email add is full so that you no longer receive any mail until you have removed some mails :D :D

I try to wait a week or so, sending emails every day bugging them. then go and report it... :hurt:

Forfeited games could be noted with an Asterisk on that players name on the endgame report.

Or say if they get 5 or more it could be noted as well on the ladder. That way it would be easy for everyone to see who NOT to pick as an opponet.

Also to comment on this quote from Siberian Heat:

He just handed me my butt in a game and I conceded victory to him very early. He took an SV and immediately offered suggestions on how I could have played the scenario better! Not only did I appreciate the information (I wish I knew that stuff earlier) but it was a wonderful example of sportsmanship and why I game here At WHQ. I hope that all the "top" players are as gracious in victory as SH is to those of us still learning this game. So challenge a "TOAW master," I guarantee you'll learn a lot, win or lose!

Brian's a class act.

All of our top dogs are great people. New players that stumble across WHQ are very fortunate indeed. I'm working on an AAR from my EA game with Dan, and was rereading part of it that I wrote waaaaay back when we still posted on Ulver's forum. Just reading over it made me shake my head with how much I've learned since then, thanks to great opponents and a strong community.

's a good place to be!

Hey thanks guys. I just try to return the favor because when I was new to WarHQ I looked at the top of the ladder and thought there was NO WAY I could ever be good enough to be at or near the top (remember the first time you saw the TOAW manual!). However, I ran into some helpful blokes who were at the top of the ladder way back when and they helped me along. It is amazing how far a few good pointers will get you when delivered by a more knowledgable player.

Anymore I couldn't care less about points. It is more important to me to chat with friends here...and you don't make friends by slam dunking folks and then sending them packing. I get as much enjoyment talking strategy and tactics (win or lose) as I do actually playing. Looking forward to many more games with you all...

I swear I knew less about the game after reading the manual the first time through. I wondered if I would ever catch on to the game. I was also one of those that shelved the game for a year... I picked it up again, and tinkered with it enough to be classified as a 'newbie', then shelved it again.

Eventually, Dan challenged me to a game of EA, as our PBEM of High Command was getting ridiculous due to all the bugs in the game. The rest is history.
