I'm not a Russian Front fan, but I'd say Guderian's Blitzkrieg 2, by The Gamers, followed closely by their tactical games about Omaha Beach and Guadalcanal.

I like the medal of honor series on ps1 and ps2 the best.:armed:
Call of Duty is by far the greatest. It's on PC and it's coming out on the consoles very soon. If you haven't played this yet, PLAY IT! It won 5 Game of the Year Awards from the Top 5 Major Gaming Sites, and the Game of the Year Award from the Board of Entertainment Arts and Sciences Association.:armed: PLAY IT!
The best RTS game for WWII would have to be Korsun Pocket, atleast until Panzers comes out. Panzers Website (http://www.panzers.de/)

You probably need to be more specific about type of game (strategic, man-to-man, tactical, etc.) because there are so many good WW2 games available. But you have time to try them all then more power to ya!! :D
My favorite is the Combat Mission series by Battlefront. Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korp. It is a tactical level PC game with novel movement system, more tanks and troop types than you can shake a stick at (ha ha), 3D mapboard, FOW, PBEM, TCP-IP, hotseat, AI, scenario builder, quickbattle generator, campaigns, scenarios, etc! great deal for the money...check it out!
my other favorite is the Forgotten Hope mod for Battlefield1942! Easy to learn and jump online for a quick game!
happy hunting! :horse:

I have enjoyed playing the close combat series on the pc.

Yes, Combat Mission is a wargamers dream!! I love it. I am playing CMAK now with 10 PBEM opponents!!
Plus Maddox Games fantastic IL-2 Sturmovik WWII flight combat sim series!!! The games are something else.

the IL-2 Sturmovik Series is great :thumb:
Thus far, "Red Orchestra" is the best WW2 FPS Ive come across (although not everyone will appreciate the realism aspects that the designers added to it). I like having to use iron sites instead of crosshairs, etc etc.
Real Time Strategy, "Soldiers: Heros of WWII" looks very promising.
I dont own a console, so I cant comment on those.
In regard to table top games, Im not very experienced with them either, but I always enjoyed the old "Axis and Allies" game...so many little pieces to get caught in the vaccume cleaner!

For computer games - I always enjoyed the original Steel Panthers game... I don't necessarily think it is the best WWII game ever -- but in the mid-90's it was a great tactical system - even if there were no second floor buildings etc ...

I think in order to answer this question you must specify what type of genre or gameplay, soince there are many good games out there and to compare a FPS to a RTS, Sim or TB is tough, all have their specific good points. I have been playing wargames for a while and my brother and father have been the ones mainly responsible for my interest (*both who have been in the service and my brother had sort of gotten me involved in a wargame clan, too). But let's take a look at what my opinions are:
Older Wargames( meaning over 6 or 7 years ago)- I'd have to say that the Steel Panthers Series was probably the best ones, especially the ones with the WW2 scenarios, the modern battles packs were not as good. Followed closely by that cult classic- The Perfect General. Lol, Wolfenstein had it's day too.
Old Games- (meaning past 5 years)- Close Combat Series, except for the first one, couldn't stand that one.
Newer games-(latest releases) Now I am sorry FPS has taken my fancy, but only in the form of 'tactical Play'-meaning group interaction with other members of your squad or company online, not run and gun arcade style- Medal of Honor Series (Allied Assault, Spearhead, Breakthrough and the upcoming Pacific Assault should be good) I should also include Call of Duty. I am looking foward to Brothers in Arms too.
As a note I should say that FPS games are pretty stinky, if played as a kiddies arcade style game where you run ceasaelessly and spray and pray and don't endevour to stay alive, however if played with a flavour of realism and with real world style movement tactics and teamwork it becomes a whole new universe. Imagine workng up a street in a destroyed French town with your squad, who are in voice communication with you and covering each others backs as each fireteam clears and moves on to the next corner or house. It is a place where stealth and infantry skills are required and those who choose to run and gun don't last very long. If you are intersted in this you may have a look at our clans website which my brother has helped me with advice on how to run the clan, incidentally I never knew about the Armchair General Magazine until I read his copy of it a few weeks ago, it is a great magazine.

I'm an old school wargamer who's been fortunate enough to make the leap to FPS games. I have to say that Call of Duty had some of the most amazing moments I've ever witnessed on a computer (I go back to the Apple II+). Unfortunately, it also had some really idiotic rail-shooter missions thrown in as well.
Even with the few bad missions, it's worth the effort, and I recommend it to anyone who dismisses an FPS out of hand.
Alternately, Combat Mission is a true epiphany in game design. I've played that to death.
I would also vote for Uncommon Valor, if you can get past the interface and the learning curve.
Looking forward to Rome:Total War as well. :horse:
As for the IL-2 Sturmovik Series, looks great, but I can't hit a damn thing, so I've grounded myself. :bang:
Enough of me...

There has to be other oldtimers like me who remember the 6+1 from Squad Leader and the Stukas from The Russian Campaign. I still play Russian Campaign when I'm not sitting in a truck. Hard to put down the classics. Having lots of fun with Hearts of Iron; as the Germans I'm allied with the US and Britain against Russia, Japan and what's left of the Commonwealth minus Britain. Gotta love alternative history!

Wow! There are so many! I am into board wargames, so my favorite WW II games are ASL series, Advanced Tobruk Series, World War II at Sea series by Avalanche Press, and I like the Axis & Allies series for a nice change of pace. I play mostly solitaire. My collection is approximately 200 wargames ranging from ancients to modern warfare. Each time the UPS man comes to the door, my wife rolls her eyes!
I do not own very many WW II computer or video games. Two comes into mind that I enjoy are Medal of Honor and Barbarossa to Berlin. I own a very simple computer game, Firefight that I will quickly play if I am bored!

WHAT IS IT WITH YOU N00Bs ?! ?! Have none of you console owners touched a PC ? DO NOT play FPS s on consoles! The only true way to play a good FPS (like MOH series, BF1942, CoD, etc.) is with a mouse and a keyboard!
whew. . . sorry for the n00b-smashing. . . my favorite WW2 game would be Battlefield 1942 for the PC because with all the patches and MODs, it is a very good game. Highly recommended.
If you have BF42 or plan to purchase . . . make sure you check out ALL the mod files. . . some of them are great while others are unspeakable.

IL-2 is a very realistic game. Scary sometimes. I will go to the IL-2 Skins web site for real skins for the planes and when I fly and fight in big dogfights, it's just amazing. It makes you feel war is hell.

alright, i must be living in the stone age or something because i think that Axis and Allies was a great board game the only thing i dont like about is all the rules and the slow game play but sometimes you just cant beat old board games

i think the best war game is axis and allies either for computer os board game, for complex than risk but still fun.
Cinematically speaking, for the moment the title goes to Call of Duty. It just has some classic moments as was already said.
In other regards its hard to call. I think it all depends on what you liked best about WW2, the tactical, operational, or strategic levels...

By far its the Combat Mission series.
Another vote for Call of Duty here, and to be more specific the missions were you fight on the Russian front, just not enough of those.

1) Close Combat..nothing comes close
2) Call of Duty
3) Brothers in Arms ( Still playing, learning, loving)
4) Medal of honor..Taking the beach at Omaha still is breathtaking.
5)IL-2 Sturmovik..need the expansion pack
6) Hearts of Iron
CD
Best is a hard target.
What makes it "best"?
Can you play the game against a 10 year old girl or a bored wife?
Can you play it in a library quietly on a small table?
Will it fit in a small suitcase?
Does it require a power source?
Can you finish the game consistently in 1 hour, game after game?
You see, THAT my friends is my our challenge.
Up Front from AH, can do all of the above. Can your selection match that?
I would like to have picked ASL, but have you ever tried teaching it or carrying it around?
I would like to pick Steel Panthers, but has any of it ever vexed you based on computer specs?
I would like to pick Advanced Third Reich, but has anyone ever finished a game in an hour (without first having systematically screwing up the early game :) ).
That's why I picked Up Front.
Boardgame: ASL ; Computer game: probibly TOAW.

Aries is right on. "Best" depends on the situation! :)
For me...
I love the simulations IL2 Sturmovik and its expansions, and Silent Hunter III. My favorite all-time is probably Aces of the Deep.
I am not too much of a FPS player, but I did enjoy dabbling with Call of Duty.
I've always loved the beer-and-pretzel SSI games; Panzer General and Allied General were classics to me, and Panzer General II still has a huge following today.
I also dabble with the Combat Mission series.
I like Hearts of Iron II, but I usually don't have enough time to play much of it lately.
I've been eyeing Korsun Pocket, and Battles in Normandy...
What was the question again?

Board Game - Anzio
Computer Game - Airborne Assault: Highway to the Reich
FPS:Battlefield 1942 series, COD,
Strategy: Combat mission
Flight sim: Il 2 sturmovik
Squad Battles
Close Combat 2 - 5
IL 2 FB
SH 3
Combat mission BB
Board game - World in Flames. PC - Europe Aflame, TOAW CoW.
Aries - excellent points! But most of those things are what I *don't* want in a WWII game! Which just serves to make your point - it's all very situational!

Tactical: Combat Mission series
Operational: Airborne Assault:Highway to the Reich
Strategic: Haven't played any.
Sim: Silent Hunter III
FPS: Red orchestra

Panzer General for the pc, it's out of circulation now. Games that trip over themselves to present logistics problems are not fun. For a more action oriented game the air combat series that included Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe was good.
