MonsterZero - I've never downloaded any 3-rd party scenarios for my TOAW (Wargame of the Year Editon) and I'm ready to give it a try.

Here's the problem though: I want only the best stuff...I have neither the time nor the bandwidth for digging through piles of mediocre stuff.

Where should I go?

What are your favorite scenarios? What do you think makes these scenarios special?

Definitely Daniel McBride's Tobruk v3.7. I think this is the perfect balance of detail and playability. And it has several types of battles within...such as sieges, probing attacks, scouting forrays, mobile infantry/armor counterattacks, and good old fashion hack and slash. It is also fairly even in balance making it enjoyable from either side (25 turns I believe).

Another good one is Two Weeks in Normandy v2.01 by Brett Turner. A little less balanced than Tobruk, but desperate fighting by the Germans does have the potential to stop the Allies cold. Best played as German player against a less experienced Allied player (if you can arrange it). So many fronts of battle...it remains interesting up until the very end when the game is usually won or lost on the last turn (12 turns).

Europe Aflame is another excellent one if you have the time. Covers all of European Theatre in WW2...with enough options to keep your head spinning throughout. Very dedicated following (as you can tell from our forum here) and painstaking attention to detail. Not to be missed at a whopping 350 turns!

LOL I sound like a commercial. Here is the scenario spokesmodel -->

I second Europe Aflame. I love the tactics inherent in TOAW, but I'm more of a strategic buff than operational/tactical. I love tactical/operational fighting more, but I'm not a scenario man. I need campaign games, and EA gives me the best of both worlds!

Also a favorite, Drang Nach Osten. (sp?)

My favourite scenarios are ones in which map and unit scales are well balanced, giving a good feel for the actual battle/campaign. Overlord 44 is my absolute favourite. The map isn't 'endless' so that you're always outflanking, but it's big enough to give you some room to manoeuvre. The number of units also gives you enough resources to cover the line with some leftovers to play with, but not too many that there's an enless line into the meat grinder. Italy 43 is also a really fun scenario, although the OOB is quite wonky. Rhine 44 (TOAW 1) was also a really fun scenario.

I've always enjoyed the Israel '48 scenario (the modified version on Holger's homepage is an easier mental exercise than the original on the CD).

Lots of front to cover, not a lot of units for the IDF, unless they go the "ant" route. While the Arabs have the numbers, they don't cooperate worth a diddle, nor have lots of staying power. It's a quite a workout from either side, but seems easier for the IDF player...though they're quite vulnerable against a cagey player leading the Arab side.

They're all good! Except that dog India-Pakistan scenario we're playing in the Blitz tourney.
I tend to enjoy the modern scenarios more.

Well there are alot of good ones so I will just let you know my top 5.

1. DNO
2. Stalingrad to Kharkov
3. Campaign for North Africa
4. Battle for Moscow
5. Third World War by Trey Marshall.

Any scenarios by Trey Marshall, Daniel Mcbride, and Brian Topp are some of the best scenarios you can download.

Just my $.02

Have you tried Europe Aflame, Von Manstein?

Maybe it would be better to place the responses to this thread in two categories . . . PBM scenarios and solitaire scenarios. As an example, no matter how beautiful a piece of work Europe in Flame is as a PBM scenario, it is absolutely useless as a solitaire game. Think there are two sides to this question.

Yes Mantis I have played and am currently in a game of Europe Aflame. It is an ok scenario. The main reason I don't think it is all that great is because of the fact that I enjoy being able to maneuver. There really isnt much room at all in the various theatres. It is very good from a strategic point of view, but I like tactical combat more. Also I like more detail out of an OOB than that. But to each his own.

If you feel like play testing, I'll have a scenario ready in 2 to 3 weeks which is just loaded with maneuver. Very unconventional, but it should be enjoyable. I will need about three play testers.

Also, WWI scenarios from the Eastern and Baltic Fronts are a favorite of mine.

What's the scenario about?

(This isn't the LOTR scenario, is it? If so, I'd love to help out if I can).

The Kursk scenario is a good one, but I think it could benefit from a slightly smaller scale. The grinding nature of the combat can be frustrating at times.
